1380 Turbo intercooler - Problems

No breakdowns so far, only problems with fuelling and ignition. Had first a defective Lumenition which really created problems under heavy load. The worst sympton being engine missing on 4th gear at about 5500 rpm. I also fitted a stronger fuel pump and it has proved to be better. Transmission has put up nicely. I rebuilt it to factory tolerances and still no problems, apart from 2nd synchro which I couldnt remove during rebuild. I had to leave the old ring there. It sometimes makes some noice while downshifting. Murphys law!

I had a second hand metro pump but had some problems with the car from day one. It ran nice on the dyno never missing a beat but on the road it would start missing a plug, always on 4th gear at about 4500-5500 rpm. I tried new plugs, new leads, stronger coil and everything helped a little. But the problems was there, only a bit higher on the range. Remember that on other gears it would rev 7000+ all day. VMax suggested that I have a sticking valve. Kiss my xxx. It would stick on other gears as well.

Funny thing is that when it started missing I let it idle for 5-10 sec and the missing was gone. Since it felt like fuel starving I bought another pump and now the missing was at 6000 rpm. So it was partly fuel related. I then took it back to rolling road and described the problem. Guess what, it bloody wouldnt miss no matter the load. Back on the road the missing was back. But the Lumenition I had was not ok on the scope so I threw it away and bought the MSD multispark box. It seems to burn any amount of fuel it gets...

So it no longer is a fuel pump problem nor a ignition problem but it still is there... The last thing that I suspect is the fuel lines and filters. They need to be uprated at distant future. If it occurs at 110 mph it is irrelevant. Here you almost end up in jail if you come across the police...

I managed 7.06 sec 0-100 kph (62mph) and 15,3 sec/91 mph on 1/4 mile acc. to Microdynamics. For now its ok.

Total mileage covered with the turbo setup 21 000 miles. First 12 000 miles with 7 psi boost and the rest with 10 psi boost. During the winter 1999-2000 the engine and gearbox was rebuilt and the results can be seen at Mini Turbo - Engine rebuild
