First, I had to obtain carcasses of old taillights, I got some from a 90-91 wreck in the junkyard.
Second, I obtained the round lights I wanted from a parts store. I wanted to buy them new so there were no scratches.
The next step was to measure and cut holes in the OEM lights. You can view all of the parts HERE.
The lights were assembled into the housings. The finished parts are shown HERE. The page here used to show the test fit, on the formerly red car...here's two new pics.
A list of parts is as follows. You can get them at ANY NAPA autoparts store:
4040A...Amber Signal Lamp
5040403...Red Signal Lamp
5091273...Mounting Cup
5091283...Plug
Total cost: somewhere near 40 dollars.
To cut the holes you need a 4.5 inch hole saw. You can buy one at Home Depot or Lowes.
Wiring will be as follows:
Use the stock wiring connector so you can switch back to stock lamps if you like.
For the Amber lamp: The RED wire on the plug (5091283) connects to the GREEN with the YELLOW stripe on the stock wiring connector on the taillamp. The BLACK on the plug is not connected. The WHITE on the plug connects to the BLACK ground wire on the stock harness.
For the Red lamp: The RED wire on the plug (5091283) connects to the GREEN with WHITE stripe on the stock harness. The BLACK connects to the RED with BLACK stripe on the harness. The WHITE connects to the BLACK again.
NEW: Available for Civics. See what it looks like HERE.
