Mercedes E 55 AMG 4MATIC: New sporty alternatives from Mercedes-AMG

Stuttgart/Affalterbach – E-Class with four-wheel drive and 260 kW/354 hp from AMG
To coincide with the start of the 1999 winter season, Mercedes-AMG now also offers a 4MATIC variant of its sporty E 55 AMG high-performance sedan. The combination of 4MATIC and ESP provides the greatest possible levels of safety and traction on ice or snow, cobbles or leafs, in the wet or in other critical driving conditions. The four-wheel drive vehicle – produced in a small series - is based on the E 430 4MATIC and is available in sedan or wagon guise.
Like the powerful E 55 AMG the 4MATIC models are also driven by an advanced V8 engine with a displacement of 5439 ccm. It boasts 260 kW/354 hp at 5500 rpm and provides an impressive torque of 530 Newton meters from just 3000 rpm. It is hardly surprising therefore that the performance of the E 55 AMG 4MATIC should be on a par with that of a sports car. The sedan sprints from zero to 100 km/h in a mere 5.8 seconds (wagon: 6.0 sec.), making it only marginally slower than the E 55 AMG with rear-wheel drive (sedan: 5.7 sec., wagon: 5.9 sec.).

At first glance the sedan and wagon variants of the E 55 AMG 4MATIC may be distinguished from the cars on which they are based by their 18-inch AMG wheels and the special AMG styling comprising front and rear spoilers as well as rocker panels. Changes under the skin, apart from the high-performance powerplant, include AMG suspension and a specially adapted AMG exhaust system. Apart from the AMG speedo with a range extending to 280 km/h and the AMG sports steering wheel (385 mm diameter), the interior matches that of the E 430 4MATIC.
