Don't buy from Jacobs Electronics!!!

Updates added on Oct. 28, 1997:

I have received a omnipak ignition system from Jacob's about a month ago, the spark plug wires wouldn't fit down into the engine far enough to touch the plugs, a lot of good that is! Any ways I called in and they gave me a return code. I returned them. About a month later I finally received the new wires. They were identical in every way!

I phoned in and a tech support guy (this one was quite good to talk to) told me that the boots could be pulled out to make them longer. I went and tried this. I then put the cap down in the hole, what a tight fit, goody. I started up the car and it was pretty obvious that she wasn't working on all four cylinders. I then shut her off and pulled the plug wire off again, only to discover that the rubber tip of the boot was lodged into the area where it should have fit nicely. I got it out, no biggie, and looked at the original boot and this one, the contact for the plug was in too far to touch the plug even if the boot did fit down there properly.

Still giving JE the benefit of a doubt, I went inside and pulled the boot cover back on the wire, the blue covering to the wire was also busted! Now finally fed up with the product I placed a phone call back to JE. After about 15 mins of quick questions with 3 and 4 minute breaks between them I was transferred to another guy in returns. He finally came up with offering me a credit of $101.00 on my credit card so I could go out and find another companies set of plug wires. I declined that offer, after waiting a month for the wrong plug wires from them I had really lost all my drive to do any more business with them short of getting my money back. Now comes the restocking fee, he offered me a hundred dollars, and I could keep the JE wires that didn't fit, but Otherwise if I was to return the system they insisted on keeping $50 US from me. That doesn't make sense, Are they making enough profit on this system that it was worth about $170.00US so I would keep their system? Any ways the guy assured me that if they had sent me the wrong system then I wouldn't have to pay the restocking fee -- let's see now, the first set of wires were wrong, why else would they have sent me a second set. The second set were identical to the first?? And they apparantly knew of this because he told me that their supplier of 8.5mm plug caps had changed. He was offering me money to go out and buy NGK plug wires??? Seeing as how he could make this system work with the car, using another companies products (he even suggested that I use the original wires, 8 years old, 230,000kms!!!) I would have to pay the restocking fee.

This whole situation, and the fact that the coil wouldn't even fit under my bonnet (honestly), has really made me bitter. I'm looking for some support. I'm asking you to NOT buy Jacobs products, and if you would like to help me hassle them a little, get in contact with me.

Thanks for your attention and hopefully your support as well, as long as I can prevent JE from making at least $50 in profit, I will be happy!

Here's an email that I recieved from John Viviani II:

My thoght exactly on Jacobs, in 7 weeks went trough 3 computers and one "custom" cap was able to use system total of three days in those 7 weeks. When I dynoed the system changing timing and plug gaps I lost 2-3 HP and 1-2 Lb/ft torque. as compared to my 8 year old wires and cap. Also be sure to onitor your credit card I sent my system back almost a month ago and they have yet to credit my card, if you haven't sent it back yet send it return reciept and insured, my cedit card is looking to sue Jacobs (they have 15 day credit policy) if this isn't taken care of, however iI would be SOL if I didn't have proof of shipping.

Keep on telling people what crooks these guys are.

Out my $50 bucks too

Comments:
Just to let you know that I support you and your grievance with Jacobs. Not much I can do but you will feel a bit better knowing that some of us DO care. Don't ease the pressure on these guys, keep pushing till they do the right thing. What ever happened to that saying "The customer is always right"????????????

I don't know, but maybe I'll stir up enough shit on them that they'll have to be more customer oriented! Thanks for the support!
