The 87 GT, was found by accident. A couple of weeks ago, my Astro Conversion Van, which I use to run service calls on network systems started pumping steam from the exhaust. Needless to say it needs head gaskets at least. We just put about $1000.00 into the top and bottom ends of 4.3 Astro engine last November. And now looking at another 2500.00 to overhaul the 4.3 Astro engine. Being on a tight budget this year, I was trying to decide which of my two vehicles would be the least expensive to repair. The Astro Van or my 86 1/2 Fiero GT in the backyard. I decided that if I could find a parts car cheap enough, then I would rebuild the White 86 1/2 Fiero GT. No such luck. Last week I ran up to the neighbor hood gas station to get gasoline for the lawnmower. And there was a guy sittin' in this burgandy 87 GT, he had just placed a For Sale sign in the back window. I asked him how much he wanted for the GT ... wanting his very bottom dollar figure. He was honest with me, and said that he really didn't want to part with it. But three kids and a bunch of bills were forcing him to let it go. He shot me his bottom dollar amount, and without looking at the car at all, I said that I would take it, on the next day. I had only seen the drivers side, at this point. He started it, and opened the engine compartment, telling me that the previous owner had had the engine overhauled and that it only had about 35k miles on it when he got it 6 months ago. The engine looks real clean and sounds healthy. I gave the guy my card and arranged to take possesion on the next day. I held my breath until, the next afternoon, he showed up, title in hand. And a tear in his eye. I gave him the stack of fresh $100.00 bills, and we did the deal. So, the Astro van is being towed back from the shop, and will have to wait for it's new engine until maybe August. Funny thing is, this Fiero is the very same color scheme as the Astro conversion van.
