I had a lovely blue 1973 504 sedan for a year or so back in 1993-94. Got it from my grandmother who bought it new and had put only 80k miles on it in the 20 years she had it. One year of New Hampshire winter and the poor thing's undercarriage rusted right out. I drove it until I just couldn't legally drive it any more and I could only shut it off by ramming the choke it and stalling it. If only I'd had the money and know-how, I'd have fixed her up and had her running today. I miss her terribly!

My peugeot works like a woman. When taken good care it gives you a pleasent ride but something brokes once in every month. It has >240 tkm on it and engine is still like new, it doesn't burn oil and starts immediately even from -30 C.

Esta p�gina me ha resultado muy curiosa, pues tengo un P 504, con solo 405.000 Km, que todav�a camina a la perfecci�n (toco madera). Fue comprado en el a�o 75, se�alando a mi padre por loco. Jolie voiture, la 504! Je suis propietaire d' une 504, elle a vingt ans, (1980), plaqye d' immulitriculation GG-74-SG. Je roule seulement dans l' ete et nous allons souvent a la France (Picardie) avec la 504. Elle a roule 240.000 km, sans problemes! En hi er, j' utilise un Peugeot 309. Je trouve la 504 la plus belle voiture du monde! my car is great I have had it for about 2 1/2 years I bought it in New Mexico it had 125,ooo miles on it. I drove from Santa Fe to NYC,kept in nyc surviving the worst weather and streets for about a year then drove it to Los Angeles where I currently live (the only trouble I had driving twice clear across the united states in the summer was a flat tire outside Chicago and in Arizona a flat I have not seen many 504s in La but when I do I feel a camraderie! I do have a good mechanic, and I have about 150,00 miles on it now. I bought it for $1500. It survives the La traffic nightmare and it is so comfortable and safe. It is in excellent shape, original paint, biege, I think. I have had the fuel pump rebuilt, and replaced, I was told because the diesel now is not required to have additives so I have to add that stuff in it when I fill up. MY fuel gauge does not work, I have tried to get it fixed but I think its in the dash. I had new struts water pump engine mounts, bearings, springs,really not bad consideri g the abuse it has taken, my boss hates my car and keeps telling me to get rid of it, that it always is trouble, and that the diesel is polluting. Meanwhile he has and 86 Jag that is always in the shop and as far as the diesel, It is noisier, but consider ng I live in such a polluted city,is it really going to make a difference? I would like to have another one that is not diesel. Plus the sunroof is huge, thank you for this site anyone who has a 504 in California or nearby lettme know thanx.

My wife got in a head-on collision in an 81 504D wagon, with closing speed of 60MPH. Car was totaled but she was not hurt at all. It had 188,000 miles and was in excellent condition until the accident. This car had not had a repair on it until it got t 120,000 miles. At the abrupt end of its life, it had only had about $300 US of repairs total. Why can't they make cars like that anymore? Last year I got rid of a '75 504D sedan because the throw-out bearing went out and I didn't need the car anymore anyway. But at 225,000 miles and never a tune-up, it still got 37MPG on the highway, 30 in town. I went for years without having to fix anyt ing-- just change tires and oil.

Great page! I have one 504, it's rusty and ugly, but very powerful. It's shame that I had to give the register plates back to police, but I didn't want to pay taxes in this year. Yesterday I sold my 505 GRI 1990, and I dont have Peugeot to drive, only old 404 in original condition. And that is not for winter. But I wanted tell this little story about my dad's 504 Pick-up. We have many times used it to "trailer pulling". On the trailer Is usually some big car (505, Citro�n CX, Renault 25...)and because Diesel engine has so much power we can drive normally 120K /H. And when people in Finland drives 80KM/H we have to pass all the time! With Heavy trailer! It is great car! In Peugeot We Trust! Jukka

Good site! A bit of trivia for you: All Australian 504 sedans (except diesels) had independent rear ends and discs - diesels still had independent but was lumbered with the wagon's drums. There are still heaps of 504s in Australia, parts are very cheap an easy to come by. - Ben Wilson.

Tengo un 504 sedan de 1970, COMPLETAMENTE ORIGINAL. Mi padre lo compro 0 km y solo tiene 6000 km reales. Tengo el manual, la factura de compra, las patentes de papel de la concesionaria, TODO. Estuvo 20 a�os parado, y con solo ponerle la bateria y nafta s lio andando. Son realmente resistentes. Lo saco a pasear todos los domingos. Algun dia enviare fotos. La pagina esta genial. Seeing these pages on the 504 got me to try yet again to resurrect my 504D wagon. After 2 days of constant trying, "We have ignition!" Currently rebuilding the clutch slave cylinder, then will go on to other areas to see if the old girl is worth getting on the road again. The best handling car I've ever owned. (Bought in Berkeley, CA in 1992, driven for 5 years or so, then put up after a bad heater core was being repaired.)

Very interesting site, brought back plenty of memories of 504's my father and I have owned. There are not many 504's in the Uk anymore, the rust has got most of them, and most of the others have been exported to Africa for sale whole or for parts. There are quite a few pick-ups left though, which were popular with farmers. One of these days I' l take a trip to Southern France and come back with a rust-free TI saloon!

I live in the city of Hobart, in Australia's southern island State of Tasmania. The Peugeot is Navey blue and originaly purchased in the UK. Later it was shipped to Australia. We purchased it in 1991. Its colour is unique here as no locally assembled Peug ots were this colour. It has done about 240,000 km and is going well. In 1998 my wife and I went on a three month holiday up the Australian East Coast from Tasmania (cool-temperate) to the tropics. We did 12,500 km, all towing a camping trailer.

The 504 is one of the best cars EVER made. It has a proven record. Our family has owned several 504's since '72 (one survives a 78 GL) at 21 years it still looks & drives great..... thanks to scrupulous maintenance by my Dad. The '72 was around till the late 80's it travelled over 500,000 kms before the first engine rebuild & could still do 150+ kph!! Hip Hip Hurray to the 504.

Unfortunally There are not many 504's left in Holland, most of the second hand cars where shipped to Africa. But my car stayed in Didam, Holland. My car was stored in a big warehouse for many years, the former owner didn't knew wat to do with the car, so I told him give him away for free. And so he did, for one bottle of whisky, to me and my friend. We drove with the 504 from 1992 til 1996 and did put him away for a couple of years but now my friend is driving him again. The 504 is from 1979 and is in a 1A condition, has run 104.000 km but the engine is still in topcondition. we are only looking for a head lamp right side, we can eventually trade with a left or right fender. call me at 0031316227243 ask for Rene. The sight just keeps getting better. Question: Is it possible to remove and replace an alloy sump on an XN2 motor while the engine is still in the car. It's easy with the pressed tin sump, but the alloy sump has extra ribbing which reduces clearance, so e en with the swaybar off it looks a little tight. If anyone has done this, or tried this, send us an email. Also if you have any information on modification of the Kugelfischer injection I would be happy to hear from you.

Te felicito por la pagina que armaste del auto mas grande de la historia "nuestra" Argentina. Estube mirando la pagina y en un momento nombras que el auto se sigue fabricando en argentina, pero te tengo que dar una mala noticia, se va a dejar de fabricar partir de Diciembre (No cumple con las normas de polucion, ya que aun tiene carburador). En la actualidad es el modelo que mas se a producido en el pais, con un total de 486000 unidades y durante 31 a�os. Es algo dificil de creer pero es verdad. Con resp cto a la foto que tenes mas adelante te voy a mandar una en la cual se mustra la cola del mismo, ya que aqui fue hecha una reforma encargada a pininfarina en el a�o 1988 para Argentina. Hi, I am 27 years old and live in Sydney Australia. Thanks for the great web site. It is a great way to communicate with other 504 owners. I have a 1978 504 GL sedan(saloon,berline). I do almost all my own work on the car which includes the following modifications: BA10 5 speed gearbox, modified XN1 2 litre engine (has a different camshaft,different carburettor and different exhaust manifold with large bore exhaust system), larger front and rear stabiliser bars, 6 inch alloy wheels with 195/65 X 14 inch tyres. I am presently building a small sports car using a 504 engine and gearbox with a 404 rear axle and torque tube (shortened by 0.5 metres) and it will use a 403 front suspension system with 404 front disc brakes. The frame that I am using for this car weigh only 43 kg and when finished the whole car should weigh less than 600kg. I do not plan to finish this until atleast 3 years from now because I am presently busy studying a mechanical engineering degree. I have alot of information about 504's and have been working on them for over ten years (mostly on petrol carburettored ones). I also know many people in Sydney and Melbourne with alot of experience working on 504's, so anybody can feel free to contact me if you want to know something about working on or modifying 504's. Just make sure you give me your Email address. If I can not answer your question, I will see if somebody I know can answer it and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Sometimes I am bu y. I usually have to use the university computers to check my Email, so there maybe times when I do not reply for a month or more. Usually I should be able to reply within a week. There are many knowledgeable people in the Peugeot clubs here in Australia and we have a great variety of standard and modified 504's as well as other Peugeots. Last year myself and other members of the Peugeot club of New South Wales organised a 30th ann versary gathering of 504's. There were atleast 36 504's there on that weekend including 4 with V6 engines, 3 rally cars, and a back half of a 504 sedan, which our club president made into a trailer. We have many more 504's in our club(about 180) and there are many modified 504's in Australia including some with turbocharged petrol engines and others with V8 engines. I know one guy with a 240hp turbocharged XN1A engine. I have a turbocharged XN1 engine sitting in my fathers garage, which one of the guys in ur club built about 15 years ago. Maybe one day I will use this engine in my sports car. I can't go without mentioning the rather rude email comment left on your site from the man in Australia who does not like 504's. Even with the best cars (like 504's) there is sometimes a bad example which is unreliable. He must have had one of them. I fee sorry that he has not had the chance to experience a good one, because they are a million times better than the Holdens which he likes so much. My father has been a mechanic for almost 35 years and has worked on many many Holdens and in his opinion Holde s are much much more unreliable on average than Peugeot 504's. My father has owned 3 203's, 1 404 and 2 504's and many many other cars, but only 1 Holden. He still owns a 203. I have owned 2 404's,2 504's and 1 505 as well as some other cars. But 504's ar definitely my favourite and always will be.

Yo tambi�n soy un apasionado del Peugeot 504. Conduzco un 1800 de gasolina que compr� mi padre en Mayo del 79. A pesar de que tenemos otro coche m�s nuevo el 504 sigue siendo el que se utiliza a diario. Sobre el placer que transmite el conducirlo creo que lo mejor es eso conducirlo. Es un c�mulo de cosas dif�cil de explicar con palabras, a parte de su ya m�tica dureza. En definitiva es un coche b�rbaro a pesar de sus 20 a�os. Mi padre se compro un GL2000 por el 79,creo.Lo tuvo hasta el 85 y lo vendio con 80000km. Soy el orgulloso propietario de un venerable 504 XSE de 1978. Me alegr� mucho hallar esta p�gina, pues considero que un auto que se ha fabricado en tales cantidades y durante tantos a�os merece alg�n reconocimiento. Como bien informas, en mi pa�s, Argenti a, el 504 sigue fabric�ndose. Si bien no es un auto de primera l�nea, tiene cantidad de adeptos, sobre todo entre los taxistas. En Buenos Aires, la flota de taxis es de varios miles, y aunque no tengo datos precisos, a simple vista te dir�a que el 40% de llos son 504, la mayor�a con motores nafteros y equipos de GLP ( aqu� los llamamos GNC, por Gas Natural Comprimido. Si ellos, que est�n todo el d�a en las calles lo prefieren, alg�n buen motivo deben tener. �AGUANTE EL 504!

Hello I'm a design student researching for an essay on a subject of my own choosing - the 504. I've had my 504 for about five years and it is a great car to drive. Here in the south Island we have some well surfaced, empty roads through incredible scenery and touring with a nicely balanced car car be a real pleasure. It was this car that lead me to switch my allegience from the Holden - a great indigenous car for this part of the world. Holdens have many of the same qualities such as ruggedness and simplicity and even a lion on the badge! Our car is used mainly by my wife while I get the Safari. The other cars at home are basicly ornamental. I think I would one day like a new 504. What side of the road do they drive in Argentina? My essay will include my theory that the 504 was built as a colonial car which will run on pot-holed roads and crappy petrol with equal good grace. In New Zealand owners of older cars had to pay for hardening of valve seats and new fuel line seals when we changed to low octane lead free fuel, except for peugeot owners! I recently got a model of a 504, something I'd looked for for years. This one is made by Solido and has Rallie decals. Thank you for this excellent site. Estimado Xavier: Excelente tu p�gina. Te cuento que estoy trabajando en una empresa que precisamente se dedica a exportar el P-504 a Africa. Como veras, el 504 todav�a se sigue fabricando aqu�, claro que totalmente modernizado en sus interiore , aunque casi sin cambios en su carrocer�a. Se fabrica en dos versiones, sedan y Pick-up. Esta ultima puede transportar una tonelada, y ha sido tan exitosa, que hasta el ej�rcito la usa. El 504 aqui ha sido uno de los coches mas populares y ex tosos de nuestra historia, honor que comparte con el Ford T, el Falcon, el R-4, el R-12 , la F-100 y el increible citroen 3CV. Lamentablemente, la fabrica ha anunciado que a fin de este a�o cesar� la produccion, luego de casi treinta a�os de fabricaci n en nuestro territorio. Eso quiere decir, que el ultimo P-504 ser� construido al finalizar 1999, y parece que no son pocos los que quieren tener un modelo 99. Si quer�s te vendo una docena, de 0km.... This is a wonderful sight as I get to feel better reading everyones letters. I've been driving Peugeots since my first brand new 1976 504d wagon. I now have four peugeots and they all run. My unigue contributions are: a Peugeot utility trailer made fro a 504 wagon rear end, it hauls a ton of anything in comfort. My 82 504 wagon I put a turbo diesel from a 505 in it and a 5 speed from same. And lastly is my latest creation building a snowplow onto my old 82 504 d wagon! I've got 300 pounds of old mot rs in the back and chains on the rear tires and it works nicely. I will try to send the pictures.

My first 504 was a 504 TI (1978) which I bought from my uncle, the first owner. I had some problems with the Kugelfischer Injection system, but I never had a car that pleased me more. Unfortunately one night 'aquaplanning' (lots of water on the highway) m de an end of this story. In july 1997 I bought a 504 imported from France. It is pretty hard to find a good 504, they all have their second life in North Africa. I'm happy again!

Hi! I'm 21 yrs old girl who's just crazy about Peugeot. There are about 12 Peugeots in my near presence and all of the owners (including myself) are just about the happiest people around. The fact that my boyfriend has two 504's, one 505 wagon and is thin ink of buying a 204 (that one's gonna be mine) must verify that we're big Pougeot loving people. I must say that we travelled around Greece last two years and are planning to go to Mali, Africa with our "babies" in near future. I must say that you site made my day, you have done a marvelouse job not only in the site alone but also in creating something for us Peugoet fans to look and marvel at, as in my opinion the early peugeots (until 504) are granted too little attention in t is part of the world. Living partly in Tanzania (East Africa) I have grown up with 203, 403, 204, 305, 404's and 504's (all these models are still to found on the road in Kenya and Tanzania although 203's and 403' are now a rare sight) and until today the familiale 504's and e en 404's carrying 8 person plus lauggage serve as long distance speed taxi's driving, some places driving over 800 kilometers a day at high speed. In this case the 404's 1600 cc engine is often replaced the the more powerful 1800cc and 2000 cc engines fro the 504's. Never the less many of these cars date from late 60's to early 80's and are in daily service. since the supply of 404's dried out in the late 80's the majority of 404's and 504's purchased are still on the road and the owners keep them in tip op condition as there is no other vehicle which offers the same combination of comfort, speed, space and durability at the 404' and the 504's as long as you keep the rust at bay. The popularity of these cars has been to great that the production of 504 pi k-up, saloon (only GR) and stationcar/familiale has restarted in Kenya (I'm not clear on how i.e. where they get the parts and how independant the factory is in regards to production and assembly), and although prices are high compared to what you can buy reconditioned Japanees cars for, the 504's are still in demand. Since I bough my first 203 a few years ago I have always had a dream of getting a 504 but as the first 203 needed spared I had to buy a recked 203 to canibalize. When I finally though that I was about ready to buy a 504, I found this 1969 404, which had n ver been used as a taxi (most 404's have now become taxi's, the poor ones for town use and the good once as long distance speed taxi's) which is an advantage and indeed very rare, I just had to buy it as I knew that if I didn't take the chance I would pro ably never get one which was in 100% original state. So now I'm still living with the dream of getting a 504 saloon (I don't think the stationcar 504 body is very pretty). In the meantime, I value you home page and hope that your car will soon be in ready for the road again. Drive safely

Great site! I am buying my granmothers 504 next week, she is the second owner and has had it since about '76. It is in absolutely mint condition, and done just under 100,000 km. It is a New Zealand assembled model. Having been an avid citroen owner, but h ving had two ford sierra wagons for the last three years, I'm looking forward to getting back to French motoring !. We have a great Peugeot car club over here, and a plentiful supply of parts. Once I've got the 504, I'm hoping to fit central locking and a decent stereo. I'll also be looking out for second-hand power steering units, and possibly power front windows. ( I've only seen them once on a 504 here in NZ ). My wife is a bit apprehensive about owning an older vehicle, so I'm tru ting the old Peugeot not to let me down!!Maybe I could email some photos of this showroom 504 ?!

HELLO, my peugeot, has a charging problem, the alt., is putting out 12volts, but, the battery keeps going dead after about a week.I think, it may be a voltage reg. problem? Hope to here from you, if you can help. Thanks, dirtyd.

Many thanks for an interesting site. I live in Victoria, British Columbia on the west coast of Canada. There are a fair few Peugeots here: I probably notice 5 - 10 per week while driving in the city. Ten + years ago, I had a 505 while living in Ireland. Undoubtedly it was the very best car I ever had. For that reason I decided to try another one but I do not see many offered for sale. When I came across this 504, I bought it even though it needs qu te a bit of work. Three days ago, a new (serious) problem appeared: exhaust gas started making its way into the cooling system. Now I am in a real quandry: should I pour time and money into this vehicle? Or should I locate a different one? The point of this long message is to say that, until this morning, I was inclined to simply pick up a domestic car having cheap and easy-to-find parts. But after viewing your site and the images and seeing the (justified) enthusiasm people have for these cars, I have decided to stick with the Peugeot.
