Well up to this point you only have 2 options when it comes to updating the factory computer to work with the upgrades you made on your Neon. First is the JET PCM update. Details are varying. Howell Automotive has tested a JET unit, there are no results from the testing, however JET tells me it's about a 12hp gain with advancing the timing, allowing the to take advantage of 92 octane fuel. While this might worth it, JET has a rep for not being straight with it's customers. Brian Hughes (who you'll find else where on this site) has had to return his PCM twice to JET for moving up of the RPM limiter. His Neon still bounces of the stock rev limit and he refuses to take it back to them for a third try. I believe if you have made alot of mods to your Neon like Brian has, then your only join in my opinon is the Electromotive TEC-II kit for DOHC and now SOHC Neons. Even if you just added an TEC-II (like I'm thinking abou to doing)to your Neon, you would more control over your fuel and ignition system than you can ever before. Even if the JET upgrade worked, you would be locked in to your chances you made. If you say, changed the cam(s) again, you would have to take your PCM back to JET to be updated. With the TEC-II with a few key strokes on your PC or Laptop, you can make changes at will. The TEC-II without the TB's can be installed in as little as 4 hours from start to finsh. It comes with a base set of programs to get you started and with a laptop you could have your Neon running better than ever in a few minutes. The throttle bodies, combined with the TEC-II added 40hp at the wheels of the Super Street Magazine Project Super Neon. Just think of what kinda power you can make with it if your head was ported, the compression rasied and the cam(s) changed. The Neon even leaves your stock Neon PCM in place and in working order to control functions not controlled by the TEC-II. I would seriously think about adding this to my Neon if you have alot of engine work already or planning too. Are you listening Brian?
One more thing, I've also talked to EFI Systems about making a PMS kit for Neons. He told me he would do it, but need eight people with $800 to cover his cost of R&D. In return you get a hand-held programable, piggy-back style PCM controller. You can change the igntion timing and fuel curve just like the TEC-II. You can also control your nitrous system from it. It cost less and you don't need a computer to program it, but you give up some of the features of the TEC-II. For minor street upgrades, including porting the head and upping the compression. I would think about the PMS if money was limited. If you had alot of engine work in mind and/or were going turbo/supercharged and didn't want to add additional injectors, then the TEC-II is the way to go. Think about...The JET PCM upgrade is $350-400. The PMS, if you're one of the eight people, only cost $800 and you'll know first hand if it works because you programed it yourself. The TEC-II is for the person that wants everything in a engine management system. Now all we need is some Neon owners to take a serious step forward in running down those hyper-active Hondas.
UPDATE: We have started our first Project Neon just this past week, by installing the Neon TEC-II kit, along with AEM cam sprockets on Barry Jeung's '97 Neon Sport coupe. We are going to have it re-tuned by RPS (makers of the Turbo Clutch) and in about 30 days adding ported head, cams and header to the mix. More pictures and dyno results to follow very soon.
