Introduction

The Acura EL1.6 is a car quite similar to the Honda Civic. It shares the chassis and the drive train and most of it's body panels with it's cousin. Most notably, the EL 1.6 has a unique front end and rear light clusters. The Acura has also different suspension tuning endowing the car with a stiffer ride. There is some differences in trim offered on the Acura. For example leather uphostery is available and a different center dash console. We acquired this car in 28 November 96 in the Premium trim level which is the top model for this car. It comes standard leather seats, a CD/FM/cassette player and power sunroof.

Stage 1 (completed)

Modification consisted mostly of appearance pieces, suspension and some drive train modifications. We installed a rear wing, fog lamps and a aftermarket exhaust system (5ZIGEN). Suspension modifications include lowering springs and adjustable shocks.

Stage 2(Completed)

We bored the throttle body 2mm larger and installed a AKIMOTO/K&N filtercharger. We found that the AKIMOTO intake did increase high end horsepower but slightly lowered low end torque and hp (which made it less drivable in traffic and town roads) so we decided to do without the intake and only installed a K&N Filter Charger air filter. We also installed Brembo brakes (ventilated, crossed drilled disks) and metallic brake pads.

Stage 3(Completed)

Will be looking for a body kit for the car. Although none is available in the market now (if anyone knows where I can find one..please email me). We are also looking in fabricating a fiberglass set (see my designs below) or modifying an existing Honda Civic compatible kit for the car. If we can't find a kit for the car by the end of April, we might just fabricate the damn thing.

Stage 4

(This is where the fun begins!!) We will bolt on a GReddy turbo kit and intercoolers (rated up to an additional 50hp) plus the turbo accessories. We fried the clutch recently (still functional but with minor slippage)so we will also be installing a racing clutch to cope with the extra power.

Latest Improvement
We installed a TRUST exhaust to replace the 5ZIGEN, which started sounding really annoying after a year (too loud and metallic).
We had major engine rework this time around. We got the Cams polished and balanced (we also found out that the cams on the EL differs from the ones found on the Civic Si 127hp engine, the ECU is also different, which shows that there are more differences between the EL and Civic then meets the eye), the cylinder heads and intake are polished as well. We installed new electronics when we discovered our EL was running too rich. To boost spark intensities, we intalled CRANE CAMS' Fireball ignition coil and HI-6 spark amplifier to provide a more complete combustion.

Latest Improvement (August 98)
Finally we had the MUGEN bodykit installed. Took some work as the MUGEN kit (for the civic) had to be custom modified to fit the EL. We are still in the process of locating fog lamps for the new kit. We also installed/addes bits and pieces of new stuff...decals...a steering wheel over wrap and an AUTOMETER tach with a shift light.
We got rather bored with the old set of alloy wheels so we got a new set of 16 inch wheels to replace the old 15 inch set. A set of Toyo Proxes T1+'s were the rubber of choice to go with the new wheels.
