Issue No. 12 January 1998
Some six years ago Borderline Rodders organised a club camp out at Yamba, hoping to bridge the gap between rodders from Nthn NSW and southern Qld, and around 23 street rods were entered that first year.
This year's event saw 125 entered, plus others not on the official entry list. Among the street rods entered were many top quality, show winning street rods, and once again one lucky entrant took home a new repro Model 'A' rolling chassis sponsored by Oz Rods, fitted with a 351 Cleveland and C4 donated by Reincarnate Motor Vehicle Recyclers (lucky winner-Brian Lambert). Other major sponsors who donated give aways were Superformance, Shannons Insurance Brokers, Pioneer Building Products and Carlton United Breweries.
The Blue Dolphin Resort at Yamba was chosen because it had so much going for it as a rod run venue, it is approx. 9 hours north of Sydney, 3 1/2 south of Brisbane, and has won numerous Australian Tourist Commission awards. There are two separate pool areas, the newest one being ready for this year's event, boasts two water slides, and is a great spot to unwind in the tropical surroundings. Other features of the resort which have made it a popular holiday spot for rodders are the modern cabins with water frontage, kids entertainment area which includes pool tables, pin ball machines and video games. The roads are smooth concrete (ideal for cruising), and also a restaurant and bistro are recent additions to the park which mean that it is all self contained.
The run itinerary included a free sausage sizzle, locally donated prawns for supper & bench session with free beer & wine on Friday evening, a street parade into Yamba township, and show 'n shine in the main street on Saturday morning. Following the show 'n shine there was a poker run for entrants to Iluka Hotel, with BBQ lunch. On Saturday evening there was cruising in the park, and dinner with light entertainment which made a leisurely evening out. Sunday was the finish of all the kids competitions, and Rodders Choice voting. A BBQ lunch rolled into presentation time at 2pm, then we all headed for home.
Yamba is a seaside town, (the park has river frontage), and is a great spot if you are looking for an alternative. Some entrants stay on for a week. It was my first time at this run and I think you would be pleasantly surprised if you are able to make it to Yamba Rod Run in '98.
