This year's camp out was held at Port Fairy (Vic), and a good time was had by one and all yet again. For the early birds who arrived on Friday the club supplied a sausage sizzle and a free can or two while they talked about the trip up. Denis Oates of Tri-State Rodders would rather forget. His new big block, Hemi powered '34 roadster started with fuel troubles, then tyre troubles, then valve troubles, finishing the trip on a tandem-no troubles.
By 9 am Saturday, registration had started, and more cars began to roll into town. By midday a large contingent of cars headed off on the Poker Run, which finished at Rafferty's tavern in Warrnambool. Kevin and Darleen from Rafferty's were stoked with the roll up, and the obvious dedication, time and money that had gone into every car on display in the Tavern car park, so they offered their own trophy for the car of their choice. By late afternoon, everyone started back to don the bobby socks and Brylcreem, and headed to the caberet where drink, dance and dribble were the order of the night. 10 am Sunday saw some very sore and sorry rockers headed for the South Combe Park oval for the show and shine trophy presentations. Vic State Director, Bruce Borlase, was entered and was on hand to present an ASRF trophy to the club to be given to someone who is a dedicated Rodder but who may not always be in the lime light as far a trophies are concerned. We had great pleasure in giving the ASRF trophy to Steve Farthing, in the T Roadster pick-up.
The Victorian Police force got behind the club and the run, and presented their own trophy as well. There were a few nervous rodders about when they saw Officer Roland Cameron walking around taking notes, but their fears were put to rest when at the presentations he reassured them that he wasn't doing roadworthy's. He just liked two or three cars there, and couldn't make up his mind and wanted to talk to the owners about them. Amongst other guests were four rodders from the UK who were touring around, and decided to come along and enter. We presented them with T shirts and gifts from the club as momentos of their trip. (Although a Toyota Tarago is not a very good rod, we let them enter anyway. The previous year we also had the Schuman's who hail from Omaha, in the US, so our run is taking on an international flavour, and getting rave reviews from our guests.)
So, to all who entered the run, we the South West Street Rodders thank you, and hope to see you all again next year.
