Issue No. 12 January 1998
Crossing the Nullarbor in your street rod seems to be in vogue lately, and with the Sandgroper Nationals at Bunbury (WA) coming up soon, there will be many more street rods making the East-West crossing. Graeme Mudford drove his '42 to Perth in September, and while there attended the 'Father's Day Show' held at Fremantle, and the Clare (SA) Rod Run on the way back home.
Graeme has owned the car for the last 7 years, originally importing it from Witchita, USA. He described the car's condition when he bought it as "pretty sad". It has been fully rebuilt, with Graeme doing all the work himself except the trim. The chassis has been upgraded using HT Holden independant f/end, HK steering box and Hadfield dropped spindles. The '42 is powered by a 289 Windsor, running a dual fuel (petrol + 100 litre LPG) system, C4 trans, disc brake r/end (2:92 ratio). To make driving easier for long trips cruise control has been fitted. The '42 has been on the road for 5 years now, and so far has covered 44,370 miles, and has proved to be a reliable, comfortable street rod.
Graeme compiled a survey of fuel stops(see list below)., and motel/caravan park prices for the journey The information will be useful for Easterners who have entered for the Bunbury event next Easter, and should take some of the mystery out of planning the details for the trip. (Graeme's comprehensive list of accommodation is availabe from the National Office on request).
