Issue No. 12 January 1998
The project began at the S.S.S.M. Ballarat '93, with the purchase of a reasonable cowl/firewall and dash. The roadster has steel doors (reskinned and steel framed by Michael Mayne), and original grille and shell, with three pieces of the bonnet original items, one side curtain was hand fabricated, again by Michael Mayne.
The quarters and boot are from Ken Brownlee. Frame and suspension are standard Rod City items, running a 350 T700 and 3.7:1 9" rear. Custom headers and exhaust were fabricated by Darryl O'Reilly of Ballarine Exhaust, with the front 2/3 'Jet Hot' coated, the rear 1/3 polished stainless with s/s Geni Turbo mufflers in between. Front cycle guards were made from a '36 spare wheel cover, the rears are to be fiberglass modified and bobbed.
Behind the 2" chopped screen is a cut down '39 banjo on a much disguised HQ column, supported by a Keith Black alloy 'Con Rod'. Also spread around the original dash will be a set of Classic instruments. All this will be covered by a folding beige rag roof.
The body is still off the frame (in first coat of primer) at the time of writing, awaiting Earls type fittings on trans and fuel lines before initial start up of engine. All things OK at this stage, and it's on to fabricating final underbody floor covering, refit body and then do body prep for final paint. Wire, trim, engineers report, and then... rego and I'm finally on my way!
