ASRF Club List
Shoalhaven Street Rodders/Valentine's Campout

by Christine Adams/Club President
A very successful run was held this year by the SSR Valentine's Campout at Currawong on 14-16 Feb 1997. Accompanying photos show some crazy rodders
enjoying themselves in the "Dummy Spit", which was the highlight of the novelty games. "We won't mention who won", plus the carburettor toss which ended in the Dulo bin, "Good one Dave Adams". He got a bit off the track!
The weather was fine, with all kinds of activities; surfing, fishing, beach & bush walks, treasure hunt, and pelicans being fed by hand (the kids loved that one). With over 30 vehicles attending, it was a most enjoyable run.

Melbourne Grand Prix

6-9th March 1997.
Some months before the event, the Vic State Council were asked if they would be able to put on a display of Hot Rods and Customs at the '97 Melbourne Grand Prix. The clubs in attendance at this meeting felt this was yet another opportunity to promote the ASRF and Hot Rods & Customs. So, we set to encouraging members to take advantage of the "Free Passes".
Over the 4 days of the race (Thursday to Sunday) we were allocated 20 four day tickets. Our State Director, Bruce Borlase, was able to co-ordinate those Victorian Rodders able to attend. A very hard job well done, considering each day there were approx. 20 cars from many different clubs going in on different days.
On the Friday, we had members from Thunderbirds, Throttlers, Bay Rodders, Eastern Valley Rodders, Mountain Districts and others there helping to make up our little group. Some Rodders were able to spend the whole weekend at the race, while others were only able to attend on the one day.
This is one of those classic examples of the advantages of being in the ASRF, because there were only four other groups of car oriented clubs "invited" to put cars on display, and, as many of you are aware, these opportunities don't come along every day, but as members of the ASRF we are able to enjoy special privileges that other mere mortals don't get. Don'tyou just love having a Hot Rod or Custom?

How to fit a kill switch in your car!!!
by Terry Davern

Once upon a time, not so long ago, one of the younger members of Throttlers Rod & Custom Club was at Terry D's place for a visit. Now Brett, and another one of the younger members of the club, Paul D, had nothing to do, so the boys thought it was time Brett's HZ had an-anti-theft device, so into the garage to fit a kill switch they did go.
The drilling, hammering, and the boy's singing was over powered by the Juke-box playing at a high rate (well above normal), while Terry D was happily relaxing inside with a bottle of "soft" drink.
There came the time to test their good work, so Paul, while laying over the mudguard, attempted to start the HZ with a screw driver. Young Brett was still on his back on the driver's side floor, with his legs out the car door, and his head buried up under the dash.
The motor turned over, but did not start. Then flick the switch, and a healthy V8 roared into life, followed by a very loud crash, and the sound of tin and wood breaking. For, as it happened, the inhibitor switch did not work, and so the HZ sprang forward into the bench, and by smashing into it and pushing it out the back of the garage, also caused the tools hanging over the bench to come crashing down onto Paul, and the HZ's engine bay.
By the time Terry D got out there, the boys were standing there looking like stunned mullets, and when asked what had happened all they could do was their impressions of a lawn mower by going....BUT....BUT....BUT....BUT....BUT!!!! After a few seconds, their speech returned, and everything was fixed and put back into shape, all but the slight bow in the back wall.
More noise than damage was done, and we all had a good laugh about it at the next club meeting.
P.S. Stage 2 was....fix the inhibitor switch, and for some reason that was done before Stage 1 was finished. I WONDER WHY ???
