Winston Cup Commentary...

Coca-Cola 600, Lowe's Motor Speedway, Concord, North Carolina, May 27th, 2001:

*Engines started*
Bryant: Let's make sure we get our sign out guys. We've got a lot of people walking around down here.
Buckshot: I gotcha.
Pace Laps:
Chris: It's gonna be 3 times by, Buck. 3 times by.
Chris: That's pit road speed right there.
Buckshot: 2nd gear, 3800.
Chris: 10-4. 2nd gear, 3800.
Chris: Check your wheel. Make sure it's good.
Buckshot: I'm good.
Chris: 10-4.
Buckshot: *barely heard him*
Chris: 10-4. Not a problem.
Chris: Long day, man. Main thing we gotta do is beat this thing, today.
*had to concentrate on this next part*
Discussion between Buckshot, Chris and Bryant were about shock sets. Finally Bryant inquired if shock set #1 was out. He asked Travis to get it ready. I can only conclude they were making sure they all agreed which shock set to have standing by in case they needed to replace any which was close to their race set-up or if the track drastically changed they had the equipment ready to make a shock change.
Chris: 1 to go this time by. Check and cinch your belts for me.
Buckshot: Still got me?
Chris: Keep your nose clean. Good luck in the pits, guys.
Chris: All right, buddy. Pace car's gone. Be ready. Be ready.
Green flag:
Chris: Green, green, green, green.
Caution Lap 2: #20 spins in Turn 2 after being tagged by the #97.
Chris: Caution is out. I have no idea why.
Bryant: I think it's the #20. Spun in Turn 2.
*Note* (Lap 3) The Earnhardt Salute.
Chris: Oh, ok. Looks like he spun all the way into the inside wall. I couldn't see him. He just got going.
Bryant: 10-4.
Chris: Keep 'em clean. Keep 'em clean, Buck. Still got me?
Buckshot: Yeah.
Bryant: Too early to tell anything, Buckshot? Did it do anything stupid on ya?
Buckshot: No.
Bryant: How are the temps?
Buckshot: 220, water.
Bryant: We'll be ok running.
Chris: All right, buddy. Gonna be green this time by.
Chris: Pace car's gone. Be ready. Be ready. Watch your high side.
Restart Lap 5
Chris: Green, green, green, green.
Caution Lap 12: #02 into the Turn 4 wall.
Chris: Slow down, Buck. Leader in the wall in front of you. Go to the bottom. Stay there. He's in the middle now. Keep your line. Stay on the bottom. Ok, come on. Hustle it to the line.
Chris: Ok guys. Be ready. Pits will be open this time. Let's see if anyone comes in.
Chris: Ok everyone's staying out, but from 4 cars behind us they're all coming in.
Bryant: How's it running, Buck, or is it still too early to tell?
Buckshot: Loose.
Bryant: Is it pretty loose? Do you want to come in and make an adjustment?
Buckshot: How many cars are behind us?
Chris: 4 cars behind us, but everyone else pitted.
Buckshot: I wouldn't come in now.
Bryant: Ok, Buckshot. I just don't want to be in the same position as The Winston.
Bryant: Guys, let's brush some of this oil-dry away.
**Note: Ryan Newman dumped oil all over driving down pit road and through some pits to get to his #1 pit stall**
Chris: You're doing good, Buckshot. Let's run all these laps, tonight.
Bryant: Hey guys. Once we get (Tire) Set #6 off the wall, set (Tire) Set #16.
Bryant: Let me know if it gets tight. We can do some air in the RF. That will help the stagger and spring rate.
Buckshot: All right.
Chris: 1 to go this time by. Give another tug on those belts. Get the tires cleaned up and worked in.
Chris: Ok, buddy. Be ready. Pace car's gone. Be ready.
Restart Lap 21
Chris: Green, green, green.
Bryant: 125. Good lap.
Buckshot: (Lap 24) Getting tight.
Bryant: 10-4.
Chris: That's right in between 2 cars. Take note of that.
Buckshot: (Lap 32) Tight, center off.
Bryant: 10-4. Too tight, center off.
Chris: Fall in behind the #88 and try to run high in 3 and 4, buddy.
Chris: (Lap 37) You know Bryant, might have too much gear towards the end of the back stretch.
Chris: Copy, Bryant?
Bryant: 10-4.
Chris: Getting anything on your windshield?
Buckshot: No.
Bryant: Doing a good job, man. Just like Chris said. We'll get you better.
**Note: (Lap 44) #11 into us end of Turn 1. Buckshot made a nice save in Turn 2 and didn't wreck**
Chris: Get your rhythm back. The #11 got into your bumper. You're fine. No damage.
Buckshot: Bad tight, center off.
Bryant: How are the temps running?
Buckshot: 230, water.
Caution Lap 51: #19 into front stretch wall near the flagstand.
Chris: Car in the wall on the fronstretch. Staying on the wall. Go low. Stay low. Coming off the wall. Come on, hustle it. Nice job.
Bryant: Let's take one piece off the top (grill). 1 round on the track bar.
Buckshot: Clean the windshield.
Bryant: We're gonna have to do it with the pole. We don't have the extra man.
Chris: You're doing a good job. I know it's been tough on you. Good job.
Pit Stop: (Lap 52) 17.13 seconds. 4 tires, fuel, tape off grill, track bar adjustment.
Buckshot: Someone's radio is messed up. Someone is "keying on" the mic.
Bryant: I got it. Somebody's button was down.
Bryant: Let's see what the temps are once we get back running.
Chris: Pretty good stop, guys. I think you picked up about 4 spots.
Chris: All right. Let's get those tires cleaned up here. I know they're new so let's get them scuffed in.
Chris: Getcha some fresh air from this caution, buddy.
Chris: 1 to go this time by. 1 to go this time by. Check your belts for me one more time.
Bryant: How much was that to the RF, Doug?
Doug: 15 pounds.
Chris: Race 'em hard. It might be a bit loose in the beginning.
Chris: Ok buddy. Pace car is in. Be ready. Be ready.
Restart Lap 57
Chris: Green, green, green.
Chris: (Lap 60) You're killing 'em in 1 and 2. We're struggling a bit in 3 and 4.
Buckshot: (Lap 67) The #11 got me up high in 1 and 2.
Chris: I stepped on you, Buck.
Buckshot: *repeats above*
Chris: Don't let the #11 screw you.
Chris: (Lap 69) Take a look at your temps.
Buckshot: 240.
Buckshot: (Lap 74) Still a little loose off 2.
Bryant: 10-4 Still loose off 2.
Buckshot: It's killing me over the bumps.
Bryant: I remember from the Busch race when we changed the track bar it did the same thing. I don't know why.
Chris: (Lap 80) You've got a good line going now in 1 and 2.
Buckshot: It's still bad loose.
Chris: (Lap 87) You're doing a good job, man. You're doing a good job. I know it doesn't feel like it, but Bryant is going to fix it for you.
Bryant: Good time. 32.10, leader is 32.05.
Buckshot: I'm getting a better line in 3 and 4.
Bryant: 10-4. You're running good laps.
Buckshot: (Lap 91) Leader. Where is he?
Chris: Actually, I think they're talking caution for debris. You see anything?
Buckshot: No. Not right now.
Chris: Car will probably change in the corners now that the sun is going down.
Bryant: Leader start/finish line now.
Chris: Buckshot's actually driving away from him, bud.
Buckshot: (Lap 96) How was that in 3 and 4?
Chris: Do what you did last time around. The last time was much better. I wouldn't try that again. Run the middle groove.
Bryant: (Lap 101) Still loose middle off and bad loose over the bumps?
Buckshot: Yeah.
Chris: #2 is pitting.
Bryant: Ok guys. Let's get ready. We don't want to lose much time on the guys on new tires.
Bryant: Set #16. Get Set #16 ready.
Buckshot: (Lap 106) Tight behind the #93.
Chris: Tell me on the frontstretch. I didn't understand what you said.
Buckshot: *repeats above*
Chris: 10-4.
Bryant: Pit next time by.
Chris: Orange cone is where pit road speed begins. Don't speed. Make sure.
Pit Stop (Lap 115) 16.16 seconds. 4 tires, fuel.
Bryant: We gave you a tighter set of tires and *interference*
**Note: (Lap 121) Lapped under green, then**
Buckshot: Loose.
Chris: You stay right there with him and get your rhythm back. You can run as fast as him.
Buckshot: (Lap 123) Terrible loose over the bumps.
Bryant: 10-4. Loose over the bumps. We gave you a tighter set of tires and dropped the track bar to its original position.
Buckshot: Adjustments you're making aren't working.
Bryant: Chris, can you repeat that?
Chris: He said the adjustments you're making aren't working.
Chris: I think it's the air pressure Bryant because he only hollers about it in the beginning.
Bryant: I'll only make small adjustments since we've been loose and tight in the same runs.
Chris: Coming back to you?
Buckshot: Yeah.
Bryant: (Lap 133) I'll go up on the liner pressure on the LR.
Buckshot: How about rubber in RR?
Chris: I'm gonna ask you again in about 5 laps or so about the bumps because I think it might be air pressure.
Chris: (Lap 143) How are the bumps, buddy?
Buckshot: Better.
Chris: You got your extra man now.
Chris: Copy that Bryant? You got your extra man.
Bryant: 10-4.
Chris: (Lap 149) Once you miss your mark off the bottom it just slides the nose in 1 and 2, doesn't it?
Buckshot: Yeah.
Chris: (Lap 156) You want to think about short pitting?
Bryant: Was thinking that as you said it.
Chris: Give me 5 laps before you think about doing it. I'll keep an eye on the track.
Bryant: Let me know about a caution. We don't have to be in here until Lap 180. We don't have to be in until Lap 180.
Chris: 10-4.
Chris: Thing is, if you miss your mark you can't get the nose back down, can you?
Buckshot: No, I can't.
Bryant: 170, Chris. Pit lap 170. Pitting 10 laps early.
Chris: 10-4.
Bryant: How was it at the end of the run Buckshot?
Buckshot: Still a little bit loose over the bumps. Tight middle, loose off.
Pit Stop (Lap 170) 16.56 seconds. 4 tires, fuel.
Chris: (Lap 173) Let me know if that helps the bumps over the center, Buck.
Buckshot: (Lap 175) Chris, you awake up there?
Chris: 10-4. I'm looking for debris. They're talking about debris.
Chris: Looks like he's better across the bumps.
Chris: (Lap 178) You keep running like you're running and we may just get our lap back on this run. Better over the bumps for you?
Buckshot: Yeah.
Chris: 10-4. Bryant, he said it's better over the bumps.
Bryant: 10-4.
Buckshot: (Lap 182) Car's now too tight off Turn 2.
Bryant: 10-4. Too tight off Turn 2.
Buckshot: Did you take the rubber out?
Bryant: No we didn't. We didn't have time to do it under green.
Buckshot: Don't pull it. Leave it in.
Bryant: 10-4.
Buckshot: (Lap 186) Way too tight off Turn 2.
Buckshot: (Lap 188) I don't know what you did, but this thing is terrible off Turn 2.
Bryant: 1/2 pound in LR, 10 pounds in liner.
Buckshot: Take it out of LR.
Bryant: 10-4.
Chris: Caution is out. #33 into the wall.
Caution Lap 192: #33 into the Turn 4(??) wall.
Bryant: Set #7. Take out LR.
Buckshot: If anyone can find a candy bar give it to me. I could use one.
Bryant: We have a Perfect Meal.
Buckshot: That's fine.
Bryant: We're going to go back to the way we were since we got tight on the last run.
Buckshot: We can't pit this next time by can we?
Chris: No you cannot.
Buckshot: How many lead lap cars are there?
Chris: 18.
Buckshot: Are we just 1 down?
Chris: Yes.
Bryant: 4 tires guys. Nice and smoothe.
Pit Stop (Lap 194) 15.25 seconds. 4 tires, fuel.
Chris: #8 is 1 down.
Bryant: No, 2 down. He's 2 down.
Chris: Ok, he's bad loose. We'll pass him when we get up to him.
Bryant: Don't guzzle down that Pefect Meal. Just drink it.
Bryant: How are the temps since we opened the grill back up?
Buckshot: 200.
Buckshot: They have a bunch of junk on the backstretch.
Chris: 10-4. Tell 'em Bryant.
Bryant: Do what? I'm sorry. I had my head set half on, half off. I was talking to someone else.
Chris: *repeats*
Bryant: 10-4. They are aware of it.
Chris: 1 to go this time by. Weave those tires to get the air pressure up. Check your belts for me.
Bryant: Buckshot we're 5 laps short on fuel to make it on one less stop. If you can, try and save some on the cautions so we can do it in only 3 more stops.
Chris: All right. Roll. Roll on up there.
Bryant: Coach said to wash your mouth out with water so you don't get "thick mouth".
Buckshot: I already did.
Bryant: We're not going. We are NOT going.
Chris: Stay up with that #1 car.
Chris: Going green this time.
Chris: Weave 'em real quick again one more time.
Restart Lap 201
Chris: Green, green, green, green.
Buckshot: (Lap 212) I gotta get it down.
**Note: Buckshot got stuck on the outside**
Chris: It's killing us.
Buckshot: (Lap 215) It's loose.
Chris: (Lap 217) It's bad loose.
Bryant: 10-4. Bad loose.
Buckshot: (Lap 218) **Sounding irritated** What did....? *thought unfinished* What changes did you make?
Bryant: We took out what we did before on the last stop so it wouldn't get tight.
Buckshot: (Lap 219) Boy, this thing is terrible.
Chris: Hey Bryant. Debris into Turn 1. 50 feet from the dotted line.
Bryant: 10-4. We're gonna tell 'em.
Chris: (Lap 224) That LR inner liner is a big deal.
Bryant. 10-4.
Chris: Reason why I mention it is because it's put him loose back across the bumps.
Buckshot: (Lap 229) I'm so loose I can't do anything.
Chris: Maybe you can go back only half.
Bryant: Yeah. Been doing 2 pounds, 1 round. Maybe I should try 1 pound, 1/2 round.
Buckshot: You need to leave the LR alone.
Bryant: We'll get it tightend back up everywhere and help you over the bumps.
Chris: What did you say? You got stepped on.
Buckshot: *sounding a little P.O.'d now* I said if you're talking about the LR leave it alone. All that's going to do is make it tight.
Chris: (Lap 232) Is it getting better?
Buckshot: Yeah.
Chris: Caution is out. Wreck in Turn 2.
Caution Lap 251: #27, #77 Wreck end of Turn 2.
Bryant: Pull the rubber out.
Buckshot: I don't care what you do, just do whatever you have to to tighten me up. This thing is terrible. You couldn't even run with yourself.
Buckshot: Anyone find a candy bar?
Bryant: Coach is looking.
Bryant: Coach found some StarBurst candies. No candy bar.
Buckshot: That's fine.
Bryant: Ok, we'll have them unwrapped for you when you come in.
Pit Stop: (Lap 254) 17.09 seconds. 4 tires, fuel, pulled out rubber.
Bryant: We went down on pressure and up on LR liner and pulled the rubber out.
***Note: This gets kind of comical and I started laughing too hard to stay focused.***
Bryant: We need to start thinking on fuel, Chris.
Buckshot: What did you give me?
Bryant: StarBurst candy.
Buckshot: This is not StarBurst I hate to tell you.
Chris: We can come back in with one 1 to go.
Bryant: I don't want to. That will put us too far behind.
Bryant: Coach said it was strawberry.
Buckshot: That was no strawberry.
Bryant: Maybe it was a Now-n-Later.
Buckshot: How many positions will we lose?
Coach(??): That was a strawberry StarBurst.
Buckshot: Whatever it was it's gone.
Chris: 2 positions.
Buckshot: 2 positions?
Chris: Yes. 2 positions. 9 track positions.
Buckshot: I wouldn't come in now.
Bryant: Put Set #11 on the wall, guys. Set# 11.
Chris: Check your belts. 1 to go this time by.
Chris: You know there's a Wendy's behind you. Maybe they have some kind of candy bar we can get for Billy Bob.
**Note: ROFLMAOPIP**
Chris: Caution is out. Waive your hand. Waive your hand. They are gonna send a truck out for oil if you want to come in now for fuel.
Bryant: Not yet.
Bryant: Ok Buckshot, come in next time by. We'll top it off with fuel and we have that candy bar for you.
Pit Stop (Lap 263) 5.22 seconds. Top off fuel. Bucky gets his candy bar.
Chris: I know you're still eating, but it's going to be 1 to go.
Chris: How 'bout ya Buck?
Buckshot: *very upbeat* Yeah.
Chris: Well, you sound a little bit spunkier. Maybe we can work on Snickers as an associate.
Chris: Ok. Pace car's in. Be ready. Be ready. Checkin' up in front.
Restart Lap 261
Chris: Green, green, green.
Buckshot: (Lap 271) Still loose.
Bryant: 10-4. Still loose.
Chris: Is it better, though?
Buckshot: Yeah.
Bryant: 10-4. Just tell me where it is still loose.
Buckshot: Over the bumps.
Chris: (Lap 287) Still free for you, Buck?
Buckshot: Yeah.
Chris: Better this time?
Buckshot: Yeah.
Chris: Copy that Bryant?
Bryant: 10-4. Free everywhere.
Chris: I can see we gained a lot on it this time.
Chris: (Lap 305) The #14 is for position, but I still want you to race the track.
Chris: (Lap 313) Bryant, what lap are we looking at to come in?
Bryant: 330, 331.
Chris: 10-4.
Chris: (Lap 322) Keep hustling. They're talking about oil on the track.
**Note: Lapped under green. 2 laps down.**
Bryant: (Lap 325) Lap 330. Lap 330. Keep your eye on it Chris. Buckshot keep your eye on the fuel pressure gauge.
Buckshot: How 'bout it?
Chris: I'm with ya. That was Lap 326 you took right there.
Bryant: (Lap 327) Ok Buckshot, when you come in we're going to tighten you up a bit with tires.
Buckshot: Don't tighten me up a lot. Just tighten me up a little. If you tighten me up a lot I'll be too tight. A little will be better.
Bryant: 10-4. Just a little. Just a little.
Pit Stop (Lap 331) 19.75 seconds. 4 tires, fuel. **looked like the jackman fell after clearing the LF before jacking up the left side**
Chris: Caution is out. Spin in Turn 2.
Caution Lap 336: #18 spins in Turn 2 and saves it.
**Very, very, very quick discussions back and forth concluded they needed to stay out and Buckshot should conserve fuel under this caution**
Bryant: 36, 1, 15, 5, 8, 55, 44, 9 are the cars on our lap. I'll check that.
Chris: *laughing* I'm glad you think I can keep up with all those cars at once.
Bryant: 5, 8, 55, 9 are on our lap.
Chris: Pace car's in. Be ready. Be ready.
Restart Lap 340
Chris: Green, green, green.
Bryant: (Lap 355) I did not understand that. **Neither did I**
Chris: I think he said it got bad loose getting under the #32. That right, Buck?
Buckshot: You got it.
Chris: (Lap 367) There's no reason to race these 2 behind us.
Chris: Boy, we can't race anyone side by side.
Bryant: 10-4. Done wrote it down.
Chris: 10 laps to go.
Checkered flag

Chris: Excellent job. I think we met all our goals today, right Bryant?
Bryant: 10-4.
Bryant: Someone have a drink for him when he comes in. Just tell us what you want Buckshot.
Buckshot: I'm fine.
Chris: Good job.
Buckshot: You guys have to figure out something with this aero.
Bryant: 10-4. We lost it on all the restarts, but once you got by yourself you ran as fast as the leaders.
Braynt: Guys, I'd like to check the fuel cell once we get back to the shop to see what's left in it for future.
Buckshot: *hearing the starter* I think I may be dead, here.
Chris: You think it might be out of gas, Buck?
Bryant: Any fuel pressure?
Buckshot: I guess it's out of fuel.
Chris: He's coming in where he normally comes in at the garage.

Comments: Good job boys. You done good after a long, long day. Let's have the candy bars in stock next time. LOL
