About the Author, But Who Cares, Right?

This is my first Web page effort, so bear with me. I'll keep working on it to make it more interesting for visitors.

I'm a North Carolina resident, living right in the center of God's country near many of the Winston Cup and Busch garages. I've been a NASCAR fan since high school (and I graduated in '62). I've been an Earnhardt fan a long time, too, but can't remember exactly when he became #1 for me. I live within 30 or so miles of RCR, and had the good fortune of attending an open house he had there a couple of years back. Quite an operation.

Back before racing was on TV, I can remember listening to the races and arguing with friends about which cars were the best (I was an avid Ford fan then, but now the make doesn't matter, it's the driver that counts); Pontiacs were fast back then and I still recall the Fireball Roberts and Joe Weatherly days, plus Fred Lorenzen, Rex White, Ned Jarrett, Marvin Panch, Dave Pearson, even Lee Petty and Junior Johnson plus many more. Remember when they ran some races using convertibles and some others using coupes? Or at least one Darlington race where one half was convertible and the other half coupe?

There's only two drivers today that I aggressively pull against: Jerk, I mean Jeff Gordon and Ernie Idiot, er, Irvan. I'm sick and tired of seeing that rainbow up front all the time, and that idiot Irvan should have been run off long ago. It's time for some black skies and lightning!

Don't get to as many races as I'd like, but I have been to Charlotte, the "Rock", Darlington, and in February, 1997, Daytona for the first time (Twin 125's and the 500, I sure hated those last few laps). I'm a poor working stiff who can't handle the cost of attending every race near me, so I catch most of them on the tube (which my wife since '68 hates). I was back at the 1998 Daytona 500 (now that was a much better race) and both races at Bristol this year (I was lucky enough to get season tickets in the new seating section). I'm so sick of the lack of competition in 1998 that I've put my Bristol season tickets up for sale for 1999. I renewed them to preserve my seats, but unless they can show me there's going to be some competition, I'm not spending that kind of money to see something I can watch on the tube for nothing.

Interesting cars I've owned: '65 GTO (389 4-barrell, with a COLUMN shift automatic); '66 GTO (389, tri-power, 4-speed); '63 Impala SS (327/300, 4-speed); '72 El Camino (bought a butchered up used one with a modified 327); and I currently own a '72 Olds Cutlass convertible (on which I did my own amateur restoration). My sports car days included a '65 MGB and a '65 Alfa Romeo Veloce Spider, which I also did an amateur restoration on.

Other interests include the and striper fishing (if you're going to Bristol for the races, you might want to try Boone Lake just a few miles from the track, right next to the airport).

This is my dog, Columbus, a West Highland White Terrier (Westie).
