High Mileage Vehicle Design Proposal Requirements
A design proposal must be sumbitted by each HMV design team. The design proposal serves two important purposes. First, it is an information document to determine how well a vehicle adheres to the rules and safety items. Second, it insures that the vehicle is a result of a genuine design effort. The Vehicle Proposal Packet should be word processed and all final drawings should be drawn by a CAD system. Because of the differences of facilities between schools, these are not requirements. Remember that quality and neatness must be maintained, and will be judged throughout the Vehicle Proposal Packet. All vehicle proposal packets must be mailed to the HMV Rules & Regulations Committee by Friday, March 21, 1997. The mailing address is found on the conatct page of this site. The Vehicle Proposal Packets will be held in strict confidence.
Vehicle Proposal Packet Objectives:
At the completion of the Vehicle Proposal Packet requirement each design team will be able to:
1.Develop an understanding of the problem solving and research and developement techniques used in industry.
2.Apply R&D techniques to the proposed fuel efficiency problem.
3.Develop the knowledge and techniques to select the appropriate materials and steps of procedure to fabricate the final solution.
4.Identify and describe the specific technical areas related to the problem.
5.Apply information collected to the solution of the problem.
6.Apply generation methods to propose an innovative solution to the problem.
7.Produce and evaluate models/prototypes of the proposed solution.
The members of the Rules & Regulations Committee considers the Vehicle Proposal Packet the most important part of the competition. For this reason an evaluation device will be created to review and grade the packets. The Vehicle Proposal Packet will be worth a total of 100 points. The people evaluating this packets will be members of the R&R Committee and UW-Stout Faculty. The design team who recieves the highest score will be given an award at the competition.
Please include the following in the Vehicle Proposal Packet:
A.Log Book: The R&D team is required to compose a log book that contains all the steps of the problem solving process, all of the information that was gathered, contained in thumbnail sketches, calculations, daily events, cost and time estimates, etc.
B.Basic Vehicle Configuration: This section should include a written description and drawing of the vehicle configuration. For example: basic vehicle layout, physical dimensions, and location of components.
C.Powertrain Configuration: This section should include a written description and drawing of how the engine is connected to the drive wheel(s). It should also show calculations that were used to determine gear ratio, torque curves, etc.
D.Performance: This section should include information learned from testing. Explain the types of tests that were used to evaluate the proposed design solution.
E.Brake System: This section should include a written description and drawing of the brake system. The breaks for each vehicle will be different and vehicle speed should be taken into consideration when designing the brake system.
F.Safety itmes: All of the required safety items should be described in this section. Including their function and location on the vehicle.
G.Problem Solving Essay: This is a 250 word, double spaced, typed essay that describes the process the R&D team used to solve the problem. It should also include the problems and sucesses that were encountered during the development of the final solution. In conclusion, the R&D team should describe their learning experience during the problem solving process.
H.Permission Forms: Please include a completed Parent Permission Form for each of the five pit crew members and the completed school administration form. Without these forms, the pit crew will not be able to compete. These forms will be included in the February mailing.
