Part 1
The Beginning
As you may already know there are two sides to every story this is
just one of how we became the Rolling Broccoli Riders.
Rapid City, South Dakota - 1990
The first time that the Broccoli Babes met (not knowing they were Broccoli Babes yet)
was at the Rapid City MOA in July of 1990.
Michele was riding with Frank en route to California in the pre - Judy days and the Sluyters were on the western leg of their North American tour in the safety van.
Gayle Collins introduced us and we hit it off immediately - and we were joined at the hip for the rest of the rally. We tore up the dance floor (although we had yet to discover line dancing), hit on the french fry vendor and tried to play pool.
So far this story may seem insignificant - however, if it hadn't been for this chance meeting on that fateful July evening, the Rolling Broccoli Riders might never have come to be!
RPM might say broccoli came to him in a Krusty vision, Gator might say he was inspired by a green - haired Barbie but once and for all, we the Broccoli Babes want to clear things up all misconceptions about how the broccoli Phenomenon began.
While partying
at the National, we noticed that the tree on the
Forest city logo bore an
uncanny resemblance to a head of broccoli(this is how we got our origional logo).
Eager to fit in and perhaps establish ourselves
as a separate (but much cooler) group, we made plans to
have shirts made with a lob sided broccoli, some melted
cheese whiz on top and the BMW logo as a back drop.
Our elders laughed and laughed at our silliness.
Yet here we are many years later and we should be laughing all the way to the bank (but SOMEBODY stole our idea!).
But it's OK as long as we always get to be Broccoli
Babes (even when we aren't babes anymore). Besides sharing is a staple
of the Rolling Broccoli philosophy (Just remember that when
we're running low on beers this summer!).
