HELLIS, GOSSAR AND ROSE SCORE ANDERSON;
SOUTHERLAND SMASHES STREET STOCK MARK

	ANDERSON, Ind.--(April 15th)--The second race of the young
 Anderson Speedway season went off with few hitches, Saturday night 
dodging a few rain showers.  The Late Models, Figure-8’s and Street 
Stocks competed in their second points race.  New carburetor rules 
intended at slowing the street stocks, coupled with new competitive 
tire rules gave Larry Southerland a new track record in the division.  
His 14.565 clocking eclipsed former division champ and current LM 
driver Rick Fields mark of 14.560 set on August 7, 1993.


	The 25 lap Late Model main featured two of last week’s main 
players in the front row.  Defending points champ Bobby Fields and Vic 
Hellis started side-by-side in what had to be one of the most gut 
wrenching first laps in speedway history.  Due to minor spins and 
complete restarts on the opening lap, fans got to see the excitement 
three times.  Tim Neal and Tim Lemon touched with Lemon spinning down 
the backstretch in one incident.  Don Bickford and Lemon crashed in 
turn two with Bickford eliminated.  On the final restart, Hellis drove 
by Fields and never looked back.  Hellis held off Fields for the win 
with fast timer Ray Fullen third.  Brian Rievley and Billy Boyer, Jr. 
rounded out the top five.  "How'd you like that pass?" Hellis asked his 
crew after exiting his winning racer.  William Mefford and Wes Russell, 
Jr. took heat wins.  Russell’s engines tightened after his exciting 
heat win and he was out for the night.


	The 15 lap Figure-8 main was every bit as exciting as last 
week’s classic.  Tim Phipps led from the drop of the green as Randy 
Hinshaw came together with another car.  Herb Rose, Mike Palmer and 
Harold O’Bryant crashed in the confusion.  Phipps continued to lead and 
hoped to repeat what cousin Rod Phipps had done last week with a win.  
It wasn’t meant to be as Phipps car lost a water pump belt and he 
parked it with 3 laps to go.  "It just started spitting out water, and 
I knew that she'd blow if I didn't stop," said a dejected Phipps.  
Gossar took the win over Rick Hinshaw, Rick Fields, Rich Boyer and Rick 
Tharp, Jr.  Gossar and T. Phipps took heat wins.


	Defending Street Stock points champ Chris Bair hoped to get his 
1995 season back on track as he led from the start of the 20 lap 
feature.  Anderson newcomer Jim Teague was glued to his rear bumper as 
the pair worked through traffic.  Last week’s feature winner Rob 
Hazelbaker motored to the front on lap 10 only to blow a tire two 
rounds later.   Bair again assumed the point with second generation 
star Ronnie Rose moving to second.  Rose took the lead on lap 17 as 
Teague’s stellar run ended as he smacked the backstretch wall, trying 
to pass Bair.  Rose took his first ever feature win ahead of Bair, 
Merle Ogle, Brian Brock and Dennis Wallen.  Don Cain captured the fast 
heat for his first 1995 triumph.  Bair and Don Eckelbarger also took 
heat wins.
