WHAT? NO RAIN? POINT LEADER RIEVLEY ROMPS AT ANDERSON By Dave Hascall ANDERSON, Ind. (June 14)---The first Anderson Speedway stock car Saturday night show since May 17th, ran under clear skies and comfortable temperatures. This is a far cry from the last two Saturday shows, which were called early by persistent rainfall. The Hoosier Park Late Model show was incredibly action packed, with several daring passes and some a little on the strange side. Orie Parkhurst took a shot into the frontstretch wall, after contact, on the start. He was uninjured. On the restart, Brian Rievley took off ahead of William Mefford and Ray Fullen. "This was the first time that I got to start up front, in one of these (draw) deals," Rievley was gone like a flash of light, with Mefford's mount holding up the train just a bit. Rievley added. Fullen tried to duck under William's mount on lap 19. Slight contact ensued, with Mefford spinning. Both were sent to the tail. The same fate happened to fourth running Rick Turner. Jim Cooper was trying a pass and tagged Rick's mount lightly, causing Rick to spin. The final dramatics happened on the final circuit, when Bull Baker bumped into Jim Crabtree, trying for third. Rievley finished far ahead of Scott Neal, Kenny Tweedy, Baker and Turner. Rievley said smiling, "I felt I could have lapped the field, but the rack (steering) started messing up." Neal took the fast heat over Turner and Mefford. Welcome back to Al Grogg, he had been out since a hard crash in April's "Hoosier Lottery 100" for the Kendall Indiana LM Championship series. Grogg took the second prelim with a strong run to beat young Ronnie Rose and Orie Pa rkhurst . It had been two years since Darwin "Hook" Blankenship or Ford had visited the winner's circle at the fabled track. Tonight Hook put John Modlin's T-Bird into victory lane in the figure-8 main. Fellow Figure-8 veteran Gene Huston had a fine race spoiled, when he was involved in a crossover crunch. Figure-8 newcomer Barry Jackson was trying to shoot through the hole at the "X" and clobbered Huston's mount. Both drivers were stunned but not seriously injured. Blankenship withstood heavy pressure from Ric h Boyer to secure the win. "I saw the scoreboard, under yellow, and knew Rich was back there . . . he raced me clean," Hook added. behind the two, Ronnie Phipps was third ahead of Doug Riddle and Herb Rose. Phipps and Ricky Tharp won the heats. Larry Southerland avenged several early season controversies to win a hard fought Street Stock "A" main. Early leaders Bobby Fields and Jeff Cravens had contact which caused their demise. Southerland defeated former LM driver Bret Miles, Chris Bair, Dennis Wallen, Benny Blevins and Cory Seal.
