SINGER

Singer in Coventry made small sporty cars from the early 30s in the form of Singer Nine. It was entered in various competitions among them Le Mans wich gave the name of the model above. Singers in one kind or another continued to run at Le Mans up to 1949. The 972 c.c. engine gave 29 bhp ät 4.400 rpm and you better observe this limit for the crankshaft is two-bearing. The gear-box had "the worst-assorted set of gear ratios ever fitted to a car ot this type".
In 1938 the Nine, now with an engine over a litre, reverted to mechanical brakes. After the war Singer moved to Birmingham and went on to produce among others the SM1500 and the equivalent Roadster. By 1956 Rootes took over and the last Singers were Hillmans with another badge.
