The construction on the 203 began in 1941 and in 1948 it was ready to succeed the ageing 202. A very modern design, it had a four-speed gearbox (with 4 as an overdrive) and rack-and-pinion steering. The engine was a OHV 4-cylinder of 1290 cc delivering 45 bhp at 5500 rpm. As a road car it was ahead of almost any competition in the family car sector. Production ended in 1960. | |
The development of the 203, Peugeot 403 had a body designed by Pininfarina and as a model had a life-span of twelve years with 1,2 millions built. At the beginning it had a1500 cc engine but from 1960 also the old 1290 from the 203 and could be had with a diesel engine. The gearbox was all synchromesh. |
