German Pzkpfw. III
Located at Aberdeen Proving Grounds
The Panzerkampfwagen III was the Wehrmacht's (German Army) main battle tank in the incipiency of the Second World War. Originally it was armed with a 37mm high velocity gun. Its armament was later upgraded to the 50mm gun seen here. Most of the Pz. IIIs that fought were armed with this weapon. Its well balanced design, single turreted design was a step ahead of all the other pre-war tank designs. The Pz. III may have been outclassed when the T-34 came onto the scene, yet it paved the way for higher quality tanks in the future. It had a coaxial machine gun and a bow machine gun. This layout was continued in German tank design up until the end of the war. One can easily witness the evolution from the Pz. III to the Pz. IV in basic design.
