German Pzkpfw. I

Located at Aberdeen Proving Grounds

The Germans began secretly testing tanks in Russia during the thirties. One of the first tanks to be built for the Wehrmacht was the Panzerkampfwagen I. To call this rolling coffin pitiful would be an understatement. Its armour could not protect its two man crew satisfactorily, and its meager armament of two 7.92mm MGs was not able to combat armoured vehicles. Mobility was not outstanding either, and it was not a serious threat to a mechanized army. Tactically, it was almost useless. The one good thing about the Pz. I was that it provided the Germans with experience in armoured vehicles and trained German crews.
