Nice website and great cars! I've got a fascination for the Canadian Pontiac and GM derivatives that were made specifically for the Canadian Market. My first exposure to Pontiacs
that were different from American ones came when I was a young teenager growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area. I saw a Pontiac from Ontario (a '73) which, at first glance, appeared to be a regular (US) Catalina. Upon closer inspection, I saw it didn'
have "Catalina' script on the side, but an unfamiliar name "Laurentian". The interior and other trim looked
like a mix of (US) Bonneville and Catalina, but the real clincher for me was that the gentleman
who owned it (he was checking his oil) was under the hood and instead of the familiar light metallic-blue/turquoise Pontiac block I saw international Chevrolet orange. Later on I did some research and found that Canadian Pontiacs were Chevy drivetrain an
trimmed
with a combination of US Pontiac/US Chevy
interior trim, priced and named for a captive (Canadian) market. Over the years I've grown
quite fond of Canadian Pontiacs (and other
Canadian GM cars such as the Beaumonts
and Acadians) simply because they stand out
apart from the garden variety US GM cars.
Funny, but what goes around comes around as
in the US after Pontiac dropped the Bonneville
and Catalina after 1981 (and marketed a mid-size Bonneville) most US Pontiac franchises were screaming for a bread and butter full size
car (to compete with Chevy/Buick/Olds dealers and the Ford/Mercury folks). Voila! for 1983, US Pontiac dealers sold Parisiennes, trimmed and equipped exactly like their Canadian cousins (and sourced from the GM Canada Oshawa plant). What made the '80's
Parisennes better were the switch to the (stronger and more reliable) 307 Olds V8 (from
Lansing, Michigan).
Anyway, enough of my rattling! I make frequent
trips to Ontario and admire the land, the people
and the cars. For the record, my 1986 Olds Cutlass was built in Oshawa; my 1990 Celebrity Eurosport Wagon came from Ste. Catherines.
Sincerely,
Bill Heckler
