Springer (or "Sprenger")
Type: Sd.Kfz. 304 Mittleres Ladungsträger "Springer"
Years: 1944-1945
Production Number: ~50 (460 planned)
Top Speed: 42Km/h
Other:
Also known as "Funklenkpanzer NSU "Springer".
Due to the bad experiences with the deployment of the SdKfz 303 Goliath, the development of the mittleren Ladungstrgers Springer
was started in 1944. The vehicle was based on the Sd.Kfz 2 - Kleines Kettenkrad, but with 4 running
wheels on each site (i.o. 3) The Springer was too heavy, and was hard to handle in the field.
The engineers in the Stöwer factory only had one mould to build these vehicles; so the NSU-engineers increased the lenght of
their mould, and added the axtra running wheel. The original 4-cylinder 1.5l Opel motor with 36HP was kept. This resulted in a
top speed of 42 km/h. With a gas tank for 42l, the vehicle could travel about 80km in terrain.
On the front, it had a 10 mm, with 5mm on the sides. It could take 300kg explosives; the driver drove the vehicle to the
neighborhood of the targer. From there it was guided to the actual target using a Blaupunkt radio control.
Until May 1945, only 460 of these 2,4t heavy Springers were planned; but the development was stopped end of 1944, and only 50
were assembled in the NSU-Werke. Of these, three were handed out for field testing by the Waffenamt.
