Hello !This is me; I'm a 1970 NSU 1200C. This page holds my diary. It may take a long time to load if you are on a slow connection !
My previous owner was a plasterer, and he used me to get him and his tools to and from jobs. I'd been equiped with a modern stereo car radio, which was one of the first items Marc got rid of. He promised me an original, or at least an old one ... September 1, 1999: I got my old license number and plates back! A couple of years ago my then owner lost some of the papers that where part of my registration. The new papers included a new license number, and ugly, large, bright yellow license plates.
But there's still a lot of work to be done to get me in good shape. My owner found a deceased brother of mine (a 1972 model), and will transplant anything that's still usable. September 30: the parts car has arrived in Hilversum! First thing to be transplanted to me was the chrome rail that's part of the head shelf.
And the large black hole in the middle is soon to be gone; the back frame that should be behind the radio has been found, but does not fit yet; the right part of the imitation wooden band on the dashboard needs to be moved right about 1 or 2 millimeters. Oktober 25: my dynamo is not feeding the battery anymore. The quest for a replacement has begun. Especially with the short hours of daylight this time of year, and the bad weather, i'll need to be able to see where we are going, and without the dynamo, the battery won;t last long ...
We migth be able to take part of the old hose, and use that to replace the hose that sucks the "old" air from the cabin, as part of the TRANS-AIR heating systems we (later NSU cars) use. April 1, but no April's Fool: somebody drove his or her car into my front fender, bending it in an awkward angle, and putting a big dent in me. Luckily, the damage was repaired by my owner, and there's just a little mark left in the paint. If only I could talk, and tell him the license plate of that blue car that did this ... April 8, after driving around to have a look at another aircooled vehicle, just when we are backing up the drive way of my owners father-in-law, the clutch cable breaks. The next day I'm towed to the garage where I should have received my APK (Dutch version of the UK MoT or German TuV, basically a once-a-year review on drivability) that same night.
The donor car contained a fairly good cable, and I'm able to let my owner select gear shifts again. April 15: There must be something wrong with VW Beetles ! Again my owner visited a meeting of air cooled vehicles of the marque VW, and again something went wrong with me. After humming along on the freeway for just over an hour, we arrived at the city where a treffen was to be held, and I'm unable to keep running on low[er] revs. After driving around for a while on the choke, a guy from the Dutch ANWB knew exactly where to look; a small electrical wire had broken. It took him just 5 minutes to get me into shape again. I got the feeling that he really liked me ... April 24: And there probably something wrong with me as well ! For the third weekend in a row something breaks down ! After driving over 250km's without problems on a wonderful Easter Monday (we went to a Lentefeest in Goor), I started being very noisy. Look like I'm due for a new heat exchanger, as the current one has a rather large hole ... May 26: It took almost a month, but I'm getting a completely rebuild exhaust; not just the heat exchanger, but a new muffler as wel (there was a hole in the old one). Very clean, and to top things off, there's gonna be a chrome end on the exhaust pipe; very chique ! No I can safely show my face in Neckarsulm at the annual International meeting, at the end of next month.
June 26: Disaster !
September 8: Bummer !
