Formula One 1999 World Championship

The 1999 season could be very good: after the good end to 1998 the Jordan team seems to be very competitive, likewise the Mugen-Honda engine, next to the official return. New team-mate of Damon is Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who came after two disappointing seasons with Williams.

07th March 1999 - Grand Prix of Melbourne, Australia

PRACTICE
Some mistake during the practice, and in the official hour traffic prevented him getting a good lap: at the end, he was only ninth.

11th April 1999 - Grand Prix of Interlagos, Brasil

PRACTICE

On Friday morning Damon went well with the wet track, but on his Jordan the engine broke up, so he couldn't run in the afternoon with the dry track. So, during the official hour Hill had to find the right setup, and at the end of the practice he got seventh place.

RACE
At the start Hill lost two places to Frentzen and Wurz, with whom he continued fighting until the tenth lap, when he tried to overtake Wurz who shut him off, running him out and damaging his suspension: end of the race.

02nd May 1999 - Grand Prix of Imola, San Marino

PRACTICE

A good session on Friday let Damon put his Jordan in fourth place. A good start for Saturday, when he qualified in eighth position.

RACE
Back in Europe, and finally a good race: Hill started maintaining his place, and gaining two before his first pit stop on the 29th lap when he was sixth. Back on the track seventh; he made up ground until the virtual podium when Damon made his second pit-stop very late in the race, on the 49th lap. Now he was fourth, and started a raging climb back to Barrichello, third, that took him under the checkered flag fourth but after a long battle with the Brazilian driver. Bravo Damon, a good race!

16th May 1999 - Grand Prix of Monaco, Montecarlo

PRACTICE

The Monaco GP didn't start well for Damon: on Thursday he went in straight and made a spintail in the chicane, so he could only do a few laps. And on Saturday, during the free practice he went out and broke the car, so he had to find the right setup during the official hour. But again a problem, and the Jordan locked up due to a gearbox problem. Results: a bad 17th place.

RACE
Damon mantained his position, made three laps and tried an impossible overtake on Ralf Schumacher, tring to overtake him on the inside of the chicane, with an ensuing accident and retirement. Bad week end. Damon, this is no good!

- Practice: 17th Place (1.22.832)
- Race: dnf (retired 4th lap - accident)

30th May 1999 - Grand Prix of Barcelona, Spain

PRACTICE

Both Damon and the Jordan team expected a lot from the practice. But the decision to use the hard tyres, also in view of the race, didn't permit the British ace to get more than eleventh place.

RACE
At the start Damon lost a couple of positions, probably again due to the tyres, and then he mantained his place until the first pit stop, also complicated by Zanardi's Williams blocked in front of the Jordan pit with a broken gearbox. Back on the track Damon continued the race to reach 5th place, 15 laps to the end, when he made his last pit stop. After he was 8th and started a good climb back: in short, he was behind Barrichello, seventh, who was fighting with Trulli for sixth place. Unfortunately, however, they were disturbed by the very first three drivers, who needed to overlap the trio. So, Trulli gained sixth place, but Damon with a great manouvre overtook Barrichello on the outside of the Seat bend, making probably the only pass of the race on the track and not in the pits. Then, even if there were no points, Damon did a good race.

- Practice: 11th Place (1.23.317)
- Race: 7th place

Final Standing G.P. of Barcelona, Spain

13th June 1999 - Grand Prix of Montreal, Canada

PRACTICE

Damon wasn't at his ease on this track, and the qualification showed it: 14th with a time of 1.21.094. The only good thing about it was the highest speed in Friday's practice.

RACE
Hill didn't get off to a good start and he continued mantaining his position until the 14th lap when in the chicane before the finish line he made a mistake and went out hitting the wall; the same wall that became the "world champion's parking spot" during the race, where both Villeneuve and Schumacher went out.

27th June 1999 - Grand Prix of Magny-Course, France

PRACTICE

Usual Friday, with 12th place on the grid. Horrible Saturday, due to rain and some mechanical trouble: 18th place and over the 107%. Obviously allowed to start the race due the 'exceptional circumstances' of the official qualifier.

RACE
Damon gained a position thanks to Irvine's bad start. After that, Hill followed the race until the 21st lap when it started to rain and he went into the pits. Back on the track, he was immediately hit by an Arrows car, that caused a puncture after that his Jordan went off the track. He made a slow lap, changed tyres again, and continued the race after the safety car, on the track due to the heavy rain. At the 31st lap Damon retired with engine problem. The end of a horrible race for Hill.

- Practice: 18th Place (1.45.334)

11th July 1999 - Grand Prix of Silverstone, Great Britain

PRACTICE
The tension was all on Damon, anyway he did a good practice: Friday he got seventh place, and Saturday he improved qualifying his Jordan in sixth place. Good also the warm up, where he took fourth place.

RACE
The first Start was good, but it was cancelled by the red flag due to two drivers that couldn't take the start. Meanwhile, Michael Schumacher went out at Copse Curve and with a big crash he broke his right leg. (Michael, best wishes!)
At the second start, Damon was overtaken by Ralf Schumacher, finding himself sixth. Here he stayed for the rest of the race fighting with Barrichello until the 24th lap, when Hill made his first pit stop. After that he went back onto the track and, thanks to the other drivers' pit stops, on the 45th lap he was leading the race. Ok, it was only for a lap, but it was a good moment ;-). Second pit stop and back on the track, Hill overtook Barrichello and he was in fifth place where he stayed till the end of the race.

25th July 1999 - Grand Prix of Zeltweg, Austria

PRACTICE
Friday was wonderful, and Damon opened his weekend taking first place in the free practice. Unfortunately, Saturday he didn't find the right setup and qualified only in 11th place.

RACE
Not a good race: Hill after the start lost two positions to become 13th. And here he stayed, fighting with other drivers, but without pulling anything out. After the pit stop at the 45th lap, Damon went on to end the race in eighth place.

- Practice: 11th Place (1.12.901)
- Race: dnf (retired 31th lap - engine)

01st August 1999 - Grand Prix of Hockenheim, Germany

PRACTICE
Eight place Friday, the same Saturday. Damon says that he expected something better from the practice (and we expected it, too).

RACE
After the bad results of the practice, Hill chose to use the same kind of brake used by his team-mate, who qualified second. But the race was a mess: at the start Damon lost three places, regained something, fought with Wurz, Fisichella and Barrichello, made two mistakes, the last one on the 13th lap: he slammed on his brakes and went out in the second chicane when he was seventh. Hill went back into the pits and retired, maybe for brake trouble.

- Practice: 8th Place (1.44.001)
- Race: dnf (retired 13th lap - technical trouble)

Final Standing G.P. of Hockenheim, Germany

15th August 1999 - Grand Prix of Budapest, Hungary

PRACTICE
On the magyar track Damon finds himself at ease, in fact he got sixth place, only three thousandths behind his teammate. Note that Hill was one of the few drivers using the ultra soft tyres.

RACE
Damon started sixth and finished sixth, but just describing his race like this would be mininimizing it. In truth it was a good Grand Prix, fought and raced at high level, at least 'til 5 laps to the end, when his engine lost power, and forced Hill to end the race in a slow way. Two pit stops, at the 29th and 48th lap, and attacking at the end, trying to overtake Barrichello, but prevented by the engine trouble. When the track is difficult and technical, Damon always shows his skill, and is always, not by chance, one of the best.

29th August 1999 - Grand Prix of Spa, Belgium

PRACTICE
Damon did great practice: on that difficult track he got the fourth place on the grid.

RACE
Race in contrast with the practice results: at start Damon lose three places, and after that he went on in the race between seventh and sixth place. Two pit stops, at 16th and 28th lap, and one point got at the end of race. In spite of the good result, there still the feeling that Damon could did something better.
