Hopeless Battles

Chapter Eight

Kakarot was frantic, finding no trace of Darien's or Serena's ki. Frowning, he realized he had never been able to sense Serena and that bothered him. Why was she so different than the girls and Darien? He knew the Negaverse had something to do with their disappearance, standing in the room of Darien's apartment. Half of the roof had been blown apart, and it didn't feel like it was from the enemy.

'Serena.' What good was all his power and training if he couldn't help the one person that mattered to him? He had fought the Red Ribbon Army, King Daimou and other enemies, but nothing had ever prepared him for an enemy that fought from another dimension.

He was furious. Kakarot was remembering more and more of the Saiya-jin he had been during the Silver Alliance, and it was nothing like the boy that had grown up on Earth. There had been two other men in the room, having the familiar energy he associated with the Negaverse.

"Dammit!"

"I can help you," a voice whispered, a woman appearing before him. She had long, green hair, a sailor uniform that was purple and white, with a large staff in her hands. Looking into her garnet eyes, he could see an endless stretch of time, the sailor senshi neither young nor old. This woman had seen far too much, her expression filled with sorrow.

"Who are you?"

"My name is of no importance. The only thing I can say is that I can get you to Serenity and Endymion."

Kakarot didn't want to trust her, but he could find no traces of evil. "You're restricted by certain rules," he observed. She had strong mental barriers, and what little he could see was a woman bound to time and unable to interfere. The Sailor Senshi was already taking great risks by helping him now.

"The Negaverse mustn't be able to have either of them. Darien will kill everyone Serena loves if the enemy should succeed at converting him. By bringing the Saiya-jins to this time, I may have made things worse; however, I'm willing to believe in their strength, in you. You are the one person Beryl won't expect, remembering how the Lunarians feared your presence. She would never believe that Queen Selinity would have had you re-born."

"Do the others know who I am?"

"Vegeta has figured it out, but he says nothing to the others. The power you possess has been buried for good reason, and you will need it very soon."

"I need my full memories Pluto. Something is different about Serena and I need to know what it is."

"You answer is not in your memories, but Queen Selinity's past. She hid all knowledge of her father. The Lunarians would have had the girl destroyed if they had known."

"Why?"

"People love and hate the moon for a reason Jekkanadar. Learn its history and you will find your answers."

Kakarot sighed, needing answers, but understanding this woman was unable to give them. "I'll take what help you can give. By the way, I wouldn't mention that name to the other senshi; they were just as afraid of me as the negaverse was."

The Sailor Senshi smiled, but it didn't seem to reach her eyes. "They would fear you, but you're not exactly the same any longer. In this life, you respect life, where as before you tolerated it. You objective was to conquer the Terra system, but because of Serenity you changed your mind and offered your protection."

"Can you give me access to my full memories or not?"

"I can."

"You hesitate; why?"

"You will lose all traces of the boy you were as Kakarot, and become once more the legend all Saiya-jins whispered of in secret. Vegeta must not become reliant on your power; he must be able to defeat his enemy through his own strength and courage."

Kakarot leaned against the wall, wondering if he truly wanted to do this? She was correct about him becoming the Saiya-jin he had been, but if he didn't, the results would be more than he was willing to pay. "I may not be the same person I am now, but you're wrong about Vegeta."

She looked a bit startled, watching him grin a secretive smile. He approached the time guardian, his eyes capturing her gaze. "He's a direct decedent of my line, and possesses the same strength and pride that I passed down to my off spring. In time, he'll obtain what he seeks and I'll ensure he's the one that defeats his own enemies."

"There's one thing I ask," she sighed, knowing she would give him his past.

"Name it."

"Serenity has no memory of your relationship..."

Kakarot started to laugh; "You're not the first to give me this warning. I will know when she's ready. Perhaps I wouldn't mind being the age I was during the Silver Millennium, but if I'm to keep my secret, I will remain in the body of a fourteen year old."

"Be certain this is what you wish, Jekkanadar. The past was more pain than happiness."

"I can't afford not to remember. As for my name, call me Kakarot." Pluto began to chant, her time staff glowing in her hands. Piece by piece, he started to place together the missing links to his past. There had been hundreds of battles, a trail of death left in his wake."

He had been taught emotions were a weakness, his enemies searching for a way to destroy the Saiya-jin race. There had been no choice but to be ruthless, a killing machine without remorse or compassion. A red flame began to glow in his obsidian eyes, his teeth growing until he was on the verge of transforming. Unlike most of his kind, he needed no moon to become an Oozuru.

His easy going attitude vanished in the blink of an eye, replaced by a relentless enemy the negaverse had created. They had dared to take what belonged to him and nothing would stop him from hunting and destroying them. Mental and physical barriers were unleashed, his old power flooding every nerve and cell of his body. It took all his strength and control not to release it as everything returned, knowing it was imperative not to alert the negaverse.

Pluto trembled, weak from the amount of energy she had used. He was perfectly still, a predator unlike anything the Saiya-jins or Earth had seen in several centuries. Kakarot was power personified, clinging to him like a second skin. "It is done."

His eyes snapped open, any traces of the human raised Kakarot gone. "Where are they?" He growled quietly, his tail uncurling from his waist. Even the furry appendage was a weapon, smashing anything it came in contact with. With a final wave of her staff, she created a portal, needing no words.

After he disappeared into the darkness, she lowered her head, hoping she had done the right thing. Reawakening Jekkanadar may or may not have been the correct choice, but it was the only chance Serenity and Endymion had.

The white cat was worried about his charge, wondering if she would live throughout the night? She had lost so much blood and her heart was broken into a thousand pieces. He sighed, curling as close to the girl as possible. She didn't even seem to be aware of his fur pressed beneath her fingers, her breath coming in gasps.

"You have to hang on," he begged, wondering if she could hear him. Her uniform was in tatters, cuts covering nearly every inch of her body. Blond hair was stuck together in red blood, a stain she may never be able to wash out. "Don't leave me, Venus. We've been together too long for you to quit now."

The explosion had badly wounded Venus, but not as much as discovering her best friend had betrayed her. Artemis knew something had been wrong, but had hoped things would have turned out. "I'm so sorry..." Tears made it impossible to speak, his white shoulders shaking as she slowly slipped away from him.

He licked her fingers, but nothing he did seemed to help. "Mina!!! Don't leave me!"

The boat shuddered, as if something had slammed into its side. Evil laughter could be heard on the surface, the clicking of boots approaching them. "You have to wake up!"

It was no use. Venus had no will to fight, and they would both die. With a heavy heart, he rested his white head on her hand, waiting for the inevitable. He recognized the silver haired general, his eyes filled with menace. "Thanks for saving me the trouble," he greeted, stopping a foot away from the love senshi. Kunzite knelt, lifting the girl's chin. "Amazing. How could one so young be so much trouble?"

He ripped the mask from her face, a cruel smile curving at the corners of his mouth. "She would make an excellent slave for us."

Artemis hissed in terror, fearing what would happen if they managed to take her. He lunged at the general, but was simply swatted out of the way as if he were a fly. Kunzite chuckled, lifting the girl into his arms. "She'll enjoy everything I do to her," he promised.

"Before or after we fry your ass!" Kunzite stared at the sailor senshi in the doorway, each guarded by three male warriors that looked ready to kill. There was something familiar about them; but what? His grip on Venus tightened, knowing the girls wouldn't attack as long as he had her.

"Beryl has taken an interest in this girl."

The male behind Sailor Mercury moved forward, every step speaking of power and death. There was nothing gentle about this kid, his eyes a promise of pain and suffering. Kunzite struggled to recall what he was, and suddenly it hit him like a freight train. "Impossible! There aren't any of your kind left! The last were destroyed two hundred years ago by the Ice-jins!"

Vegeta snarled, hating the reminder of his failure to destroy Frieza. "I'm far from dead," he growled, already phasing in and out of sight. Kunzite didn't see it coming, the foot that connected with his neck. Raditz had already moved to catch Venus as she dropped to the ground, allowing the other senshi and Turles to close in on Kunzite.

Turles recognized the rage in Vegeta, deciding that this fight was better left to their leader. He touched Jupiter's arm and shook his head, watching Vegeta literally tear the Negaverse General apart. It was slow and painful, several cuts appearing on his body.

Vegeta gave Kunzite no chance to vanish, breaking one bone at a time. He ignored the screams, recalling every crime Frieza had committed against Turles, Raditz and himself. Pure hate drove him, the sick feeling he could never shake as he recalled the Ice-jin's hands on his body. It was very possible that Frieza was still alive, and Vegeta vowed to destroy him.

Perhaps it was best that the Saiya-jins were thought dead, giving the Saiya-jins a distinct advantage over the Ice-jins. Kunzite gasped for air, unable to even crawl as Vegeta hovered above him. "You're just like him..." he choked, spitting up green blood. "Jekkanadar..."

The sailor senshi gasped, recognizing the name. Vegeta only smirked, kneeling down beside Kunzite until his lips were near his ear. Whispering to where only the general could hear, "He's my ancestor, a legend among our race. After a thousand years, I have what it takes to become what he was."

"No one..." he gurgled, having difficulty speaking, "no one can be what he was. Even Beryl feared him..." Vegeta snapped his neck, refusing to listen to the man. He already knew Jekkanadar contained more power than any one Saiya-jin could possibly imagine. Vegeta was also aware that Kakarot was showing signs of being his reincarnation. He smirked. Vegeta would give anything to learn from the man that could destroy an entire star system in a single blast.

"Is she alive?" Jupiter asked, trying to stop some of the bleeding on Venus.

"Yes, but barely. Put her on the table," Mercury commanded, taking charge of the situation. She knew what to do, thankful for all the extra study time she put in. Saving Venus would be anything short of a miracle, and the girl definitely needed one.

Artemis jumped on the table, watching as Mercury grabbed anything she could use. "Check to see if there's a medical room on board. I'll need lots of medical supplies and pain killers."

Jupiter and Turles did as she asked, needing the last senshi alive. They would not give the negaverse the victory by allowing Venus to die. Luna came up beside Artemis, praying that Mercury could save her. Artemis looked terrified, a tear sliding down his white cheek. He loved the Sailor Senshi as if she were his own daughter, having raised her the past five years.

"We'll save her," the black feline promised, trying to ease his sorrow.

"I can't lose her, Luna. We've been together for two life times."

"I know. If only we had the silver crystal."

"Did you find her?"

Luna didn't answer, afraid to tell him the truth. How could she admit that the Negaverse had managed to capture the Moon Princess and Prince Endymion? She had failed and would carry that upon her shoulders for quite some time.

Serena woke in the dark, her head pressed against Darien's shoulder. They had been traveling for hours, for what seemed like an eternity. Hungry, thirsty and with no clue as to where they were headed, Serena knew they were in trouble. Several times she thought something was stalking them, perhaps one of the generals that had sent them to this place.

Neither Darien or herself spoke, not wanting to alert the Negaverse of their location. "We have to keep going." His words were a bare whisper, Serena straining to hear him. Serena wanted to be brave, but she was trembling with fright. Darien had asked her about the power she had used prior to appearing here, but she couldn't remember any of it.

"We can't keep this up, Darien."

"I know. The important thing for both of us is not to panic."

Wanting to pass the time and to keep her mind off where they were at, Serena started to ask Darien questions. "Why do you help us?"

"I help you, not the others. Other than Kakarot and yourself, none of the others have ever made an effort to become my friend. All anyone saw was an orphan."

"You're like Kakarot and his brothers. No one wanted to adopt you."

"Who wanted a kid that had strange abilities? When I was hurt, I could heal my own injuries. Sometimes the gift could be used on another, but I was always called a freak for it."

Serena couldn't imagine how people could be so cruel. She trusted Darien with her life, and saw a compassionate friend that would do anything to keep her safe. He was like an older brother to her, someone she could tell her worst fears. Kakarot was always on the protective side when it came to her safety. He could be extremely gentle, but there were times when Kakarot truly frightened her.

"I'm sorry," she said, wishing she could have been there for him.

"Serena, I'm not upset with the life I've lived. I'm grateful that I could call you a friend, and that you don't seem to judge me the way everyone else seems to. I think that's the reason why I loved teasing you so much. It was funny watching the expressions dance across your face, but I could see that you never hated me."

"No," she giggled, forgetting that they were in danger. "I still wanted to kick you half the time."

Darien smiled, wishing they were in a place other than the Negaverse. "Why did you become Sailor Moon?"

"It was necessary." Her answer was evasive, as if she weren't quite sure of the answer herself. "I hate fighting, but there are times when something dark takes control and all I want to do is tear my enemies apart. It doesn't make any sense, and it frightens me."

"We'll figure it out, Serena. I don't think you'll hurt the ones you care about."

"I hope so."

"Darien, will we get out of this?"

"Not if I have anything to say about it!" Darien pushed Serena behind him, focusing on where the voice had come from. He heard the evil laughter, a breath against his throat. "It won't help," it taunted. "This is our world, and it's difficult to fight what you can't see."

"Coward," Darien spat, straining to hear anything. It was impossible, the general able to fly while they were forced to stay on the ground. "Who are you?"

"I'm hurt, Endymion. You can't remember one of your own personal guards?"

"Zoicite! Why did you betray us?"

"Who could resist the power offered to us?"

Serena screamed, a pair of arms circling around her waist. She struggled to break free, but a hand wrenched her neck back and trapped it against a powerful shoulder. "Move and I'll snap your pretty neck."

"Serena!"

"Stop!" Zoicite commanded, illuminating the darkness with a bright light. Nephrite was holding Serena's neck in a painful position, smirking at Darien's helpless expression. "Drop the sword and surrender. Refuse and we will kill her."

Serena watched in horror as Darien did as Zoicite asked, feeling tight bands circling around his arms and legs. Unable to keep himself balanced, he collapsed to the ground, his eyes filled with venomous hatred. Zoicite laughed, walking towards Serena and Nephrite.

"We could always use another play toy," he taunted.

"Don't touch her!" Darien roared. Serena was staring at Zoicite in terror, not understanding what it was he intended to do with her.

"We always need more soldiers, Endymion. Her power would be a great asset to us."

"Touch her and I'll rip you limb from limb!" Zoicite hesitated, realizing Darien would do it.

"I think we should kill you," he growled, realizing the threat Darien posed. Beryl could possess him with the powers of the Negaverse, but would it last? She had tried it before and failed. Darien's loyalty to Serena was too deep and not worth the risk.

"Touching her was your last mistake," a voice growled from the darkness, the shadows untouched by the light Zoicite had provided. Darien paled, recognizing that voice. It sounded different, more lethal.

"Show yourself!" Nephrite roared, tilting Serena's neck back further. She whimpered, feeling his fingers tighten around her throat. It was difficult to breathe and she couldn't even reach up to release some of the pressure.

"Take her and leave!" Zoicite growled. Neprhite vanished, taking Serena with him. "Kill me and you'll never see her again!" Zoicite searched the shadows, but it was impossible to see, hear or smell the threat that stalked him.

"Kill her and I'll never stop hunting you. You threaten to torture what belongs to me; you have yet to experience the true meaning of pain." The shadows parted, Zoicite staggering back with a horrified gasp. "I remember you!"

Kakarot's smile was anything but friendly, sending a shiver down Darien's spine. He knew that look, remembering the last time someone dared to hurt Serena. There was nothing left of the man after Kakarot was done. Kakarot gave him a glance before he vanished, a fist driven through Zoicite's chest.

Darien could only stare in shock as Kakarot squeezed the heart in the palm of his hand, satisfied to hear the General shriek like a girl. After a few seconds he released the pressure, his sharp teeth near Zoicite's throat. The man's knees buckled, feeling his life floating away. Again Kakarot squeezed, jerking the General awake. "It's not so easy. Why does Beryl hunt Serena and Darien?"

"Beryl was told to kill her by Queen Metallia; we weren't told why. As for Darien, he was the only human that escaped her power. She could never control him like the rest of us; it drove her mad."

"Darien is more than a mere human!" Kakarot snarled. He began to build a golden light in the palm of his hand, never quite releasing the heart from his grasp as it exploded. Immediately Darien was free of his restraints, staring at Kakarot with a mixture of respect and fear.

"What did you mean?"

"You're different like the Sailor Senshi, how I haven't had the time to figure out yet." He started to head back into the darkness, Darien having trouble keeping up. "Damn it! I can no longer sense him!"

Darien paled, praying they didn't hurt or kill Serena. "Can we find her in time?"

"She will not die!" It was a promise, and Darien believed him.

Serena couldn't scream, her throat being crushed in Nephrite's grip. He laughed, loving the feel of her dying. Nephrite knew she would never be able to speak again, but it wouldn't matter after she was dead. Her vision began to blur, Serena slipping into darkness when she felt a flicker of awareness touch her mind.

"Draw on my energy," it whispered, flooding her with a dark power that both frightened and calmed her. It wasn't evil, but neither was it good.

She wanted to ask who he was, but Serena was losing consciousness. It would be so easy to let go. "No!" He commanded, seizing control of her mind. "We are connected. One cannot live without the other!" She shivered at the power in his voice, making it impossible to do anything but obey. The blue of her eyes vanished, replaced by a cold and merciless silver. She turned her gaze on Nephrite, ignoring the pain in her throat. His eyes widened, shocked that his strength was having no effect on her.

"What the hell are you?" He snarled, knowing she couldn't answer him. A crescent moon shimmered on her forehead, golden for but a moment before it turned a pitch black. It slammed into his body, ripping him apart from the inside out. "Impossible! How are you doing this? No Lunarian should have this power!" He screamed, but before he vanished, he created a portal that swallowed her.

As she fell into the black void, Serena closed her eyes, unable to stay awake. It no longer mattered; she was so tired. The shadow in her mind flickered, trying to keep her alive but lost its hold. Suddenly she felt very alone, but darkness claimed her and she knew nothing else as she fell, sinking to a world that not even the time guardian was permitted to access.

Kakarot froze, trembling in terrified silence. 'Serena.' She had been such a big part of his life, that he felt the separation immediately. He didn't want to think the worse, but the slight connection they always possessed was no longer present. A green light surrounded Darien and himself, transporting them to a place separated from time. In front of them were a thousand mirrors, each revealing a different piece of time.

Pluto looked exhausted, kneeling on the ground in despair and grief. "What happened?" Kakarot demanded, helping her to stand despite his growing fear.

"Neprhite sent her to a place we cannot follow."

"Where is she? Is she dead? Why can't I feel her?"

"She's alive..." Pluto started to cry, never feeling so helpless in her life. She wanted to go after Serena, but it was impossible. "Nephrite opened a portal straight to the underworld, a place no mortal belongs."

"She's in hell?"

"It's hard to say," Pluto cried, "Only King Yamma of the underworld, in charge of both heaven and hell, can help her."

Darien visibly paled, his hands visibly shaking. "We'll have to hope that she'll return to us," he choked, fighting back the tears. "In the mean time, we have to keep the negaverse from getting any stronger."

Kakarot was fighting for control, sparks threatening to explode in all directions. Darien touched his arm, his expression grief stricken. "Serena needs her best friend, Kakarot. I need your help; will you return?"

"Do we have a choice?" Kakarot growled. Darien heard the note of pain in the Saiya-jin's voice. "Dammit! Why can't I protect that girl? This is the second time the negaverse has taken her from me!"

"Kakarot, she will return." Everyone turned to the shadow that appeared from nothing, flickered and took shape. He was tall with silver hair and eyes, occasionally shimmering before he regained his solid form. On his forehead was a black crescent moon. Pluto paled, dropping her time staff.

His gaze fell on Pluto, silently demanding her to say nothing of who or what he was. "You have ten years," his voice boomed. "In that time, you will train the other Saiya-jins and Sailor Senshi to aid Sailor Moon upon her return."

"But..."

"The Negaverse is my concern until that time. Beryl and I have much to discuss," he whispered, already fading. "Serenity will need the strength of her friends upon the end of her journey."

"Can you bring her back?" Kakarot asked.

"No. This task is Serenity's alone. If she fails, not only will she die, the negaverse will destroy this planet. My task is not to fight them, but to give everyone here the time to prepare."

Before Kakarot or Darien could ask their questions, they were standing on a ship where Sailor Mercury was desperately trying to save Sailor Venus. Darien gasped, immediately going to her side and placing the palms of his hand on her stomach. Golden energy began to flow into her body, closing the many wounds that was quickly eating at her life force.
