New Friend

Chapter Two

"Where am I?"

"Good morning, Kakarot?"

"Kakarot?"

A woman, with a funny looking black and white hood on her head and a cross around her neck, smiled at him with sympathy. "You poor child. You're the first to awaken. Such a terrible accident. All but five died on the bus; you were lucky to survive."

"Bus accident? What are you talking about? Why can't I remember anything?"

"The doctors say that all five of you have anmesia. Very rare, but understandble considering the circumstances. You're in an orphange for boys."

"My head hurts. The nun led Kakarot to another room and he saw four other boys lying in their beds unconscious. The only one that appeared injured was the one with dark hair and pale skin. He was the only one not to possess a tail. Kakarot glanced down at his waist. 'I have a tail?' he thought. 'Why?'

"The bus had names of all the students on it. Don't worry. We'll locate any family members if there are any."

Six Months Later

"Kakarot!" He stopped the swing and frowned. Kakarot hated it when Vegeta yelled at him, but seldom said anything. Ever since waking up in the strange orphange, he felt lost and confused. "We have school in five minutes, let's go!"

Turles and Raditz were waiting on the side-walk, their arms crossed in annoyance. "Why are you always the last to join us?" Turles growled, his tail twitching at his waist.

Kakaort glared at his brother. He had no memories before the accident, but the paper work from the church bus said that Turles was his twin brother, and Raditz was the older brother. Vegeta was a friend and was with them when the bus crashed over a cliff, killing twenty other children and the bus driver. The only other survivor was a boy named Darien. He was in the sixth grade.

"Do we have to wear these god awful clothes?" Raditz fumed, tugging at his new school uniform. "Who invented such things?"

"Shut up!" Vegeta snarled.

The four boys walked through downtown traffic, captivated by the lights, cars and thousands of people rushing by them. "What's the hurry?" Kakarot asked, curious about everything.

"Who cares? We're going to be late again and I don't want to spend another day in detention!"

"If you didn't pick fights with the teacher every morning, we wouldn't be in detention!" Kakarot snapped back, his tail bristling at the challenge in Turles eyes. They almost started fighting when they heard a cry of fear and pain come from around the corner.

A small girl with golden hair sat on the ground crying, a group of older boys surrounding her and laughing. Her uniform was slightly torn and they taunted the terrfied girl as one kicked her in the side. "Owww!" she screamed.

Turles, Vegeta and Raditz continued to move on, but Kakarot had stopped to glare at the boys. She was defensless and unable to stop their attacks. A hand came up to slap her, but before it could connect with her cheek again, the boy was thrown back and shoved through a nearby wall. "Leave her alone!"

"Tommy, it's one of the losers from the orphange!"

"Teach him a lesson, Jacky!" The boys laughed.

Kakarot smirked, dodging every punch and kick. For a moment he hesitated, but everything felt so familiar as he drove his fists into their chests, kicking their jaws with his foot. "Let's get out of here!" The boys screamed in terror, forgetting all about the small girl and her lunch money.

Kneeling down, Kakarot shook the girl's shoulder, trying to get her to look at him through her fetal position on the ground. "They're gone now. Are you alright?"

Slowly she lifted her head, afraid that another foot or fist would strike her. "Umhmm. Thank you," she whispered. She slowly stood up and grabbed her ruined back pack, all her crayons, and papers on the ground. "I was waiting for the bus when those boys started to chase me."

"Where do you go to school?"

She frowned, "Juuban elementary. It's my first day."

"I go there!"

"You do?" she asked, smiling for the first time. Kakarot wiped the blood from her face and started to walk with her. "I think we missed the bus though."

"That's ok. The school is only a mile from here."

"Do you always walk?"

"Yep."

"My name's Serena."

"Kakarot."

"Kakarot!" Vegeta shouted. "Hurry up!"

Serena cringed, but Kakarot grabbed her hand and started to run. "Come on, we don't want to be late!"

Kakarot stared out the window, oblivious to what the teacher was trying to teach them. 'Who cared about shapes and colors anyway?'

A knock came on the door and the girl from this morning entered. She looked scared, but the teacher smiled and brought her to the front of the class. "Everyone, I have a new student and I want you to make her feel welcome. What's your name?"

"Serena."

"Go sit next to Kakarot, Serena. He'll be your study partner for the remainder of the year."

Raditz being in a higher grade than his brothers, left Kakarot by himself when they chose partners. He didn't mind and smiled as Serena sat shyly next to him. "Hi," he greeted.

Turles rolled his eyes and continued to flip through the picture books on his desk. "What is this crap? Hanzel and Grettle; Red Riding Hood? Goldy Locks and the three bears? This is so boring!"

Serena said nothing through the entire morning and jumped every time someone bumped her chair. "Are you alright?"

"Yeah..." she whispered. "I've never been in a school before. I was adopted a week ago."

"Wow. Do you like your new family?"

"They're nice," she admitted. "What about you?"

"Nope, don't have any parents. It's ok though."

At the end of the day, Kakarot walked Serena to the bus stop, his brothers and Vegeta heading back to the orphange. Strange how he felt no connection to them. "This stuff looks hard," Serena said, flipping through her homework.

"Do you want help?" Kakarot asked, not wanting to go back to the orphange yet.

Serena smiled, letting him sit beside her on the bus. Her new parents greeted the boy and gave him cookies as they did their homework together.

In the shadows, a woman watched the two children forming an unbreakable friendship. "At last, everything will be ok again. Queen Selinity, please forgive me, but she would have never been happy with her other destiny." Disappearing, no one ever knew that she had been present.
