Merriam, Kansas
NEWS FLYER

Bring the whole family to make a splash with your neighbors at the Fun-In-The-Sun  Merriam Hills Neighborhood Pool Party at the home of Andrew, Susan and Olivia North. The pool is at the back of the house.  Look for a yard sign with blue balloons.  Please park on Hardy St. and walk.  Just bring your lawn chairs and we will provide the rest.  Food and fun for all !!! Come enjoy a beautiful summer afternoon with your neighbors.  This event will include our general Merriam Hills Neighborhood Group meeting at 4pm.

As most of you know, our Ward 4 councilman, Mike McCormick, died on May 5, 2004.  He was elected to a four-year term in April 2003 and was a dedicated councilman serving the residents of our area.  His determination, perseverance and humor will be missed.

As a result of Mike’s death, Mayor Carl Wilkes is accepting applications from those interested
in being appointed to the council seat.  Ward 4 residents must submit a letter of interest and a resume no later than June 23rd to the mayor at Merriam City Hall,   9000 West 62nd Terr.,
Merriam, KS. 66203.  To date it is undecided whether the term of office for the new council member will run until 2005 (next election) or 2007 (end of the existing term).

Community Information Meeting      Wed. June 9th   7pm    City Hall

The storm drainage project and street improvements on Goodman are expected to begin this summer. There will be a community information meeting on Wednesday, June 9th at 7pm in the council chambers at Merriam City Hall. The construction plans will be available for public viewing.  Come see how this street project will proceed and ask questions of the city engineer and construction inspector.   Other Merriam Hills streets are scheduled for similar improvements over the next few years so this effects us all.   Come to the meeting.

Problem Property - Action Being Taken

Thanks to Chris Hands, the McCauleys and other neighbors for their diligence over the past two years to make the neighborhood a better place to live.  On May 28th the city council acted on the problem property at 5518 Goodman.  The old house has been torn down and work is being done.  The property owners have 180 days to complete and occupy the structure.  A long-overdue and much-needed improvement in Merriam Hills.

As our neighborhood group progresses, we need your financial help to remain active.  Please help keep us going with your donation.  A big thank you to those who have already shown their support.  You will be receiving a personal acknowledgment  from our group’s chairman.   Send  your check made out to Merriam Hills Neighborhood Group to our treasurer:

We currently have openings for the position of group Co-Chair and Safety Committee chair.  You can make a difference in our neighborhood by volunteering to serve in one of these positions.  Contact Tarre Beach at 722-3747 if interested.

Unexpectedly deep snow and ice on December 13th caused a cancellation of our winter caroling party.  Thanks to those volunteers who made cookies for the event and to the youth group who had planned to join us.   We were all disappointed but will try for another event this winter.    If you have suggestions for a neighborhood event, please contact Tarre Beach.
