| This large (319x438 cm) tempera painting was made for the Confraternity of the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista. They hired the most respected Venetian painters to recreate scenes of the miracles which a fragment of wood from Jesus' Holy Cross was said to have performed. Each painting (called a telero) was done by a different artist. Lazzaro's depicts the ceremony in which the fragment of the cross was given to the Scuola of S. Giovanni. Today the painting is prized for the glimpse it gives us of late Medieval Venice. | ||||||||||||||||
