Christ at the Column
1475-1479
Antonello da Messina was born in Messina close to 1430. He studied and also worked in Naples at the same time as other famous artists, many of them Flemish (such as Jan van Eyck). Here he was introduced to the Flemish technique of painting with oil paints, and became the one of the first Italians to adopt this style. From 1475-1476 he resided in Venice, painting many works including his Crucifixion and the San Cassiano Altarpiece. After this he returned to Messina where he painted several works including Annunciation (his last painting) before he died there  in 1479.
