Medieval Art Gallery
Andrea del Castagno
The Youthful David
This tempera painting, painted on leather and mounted on wood, was originally used as a shield in a parade. Shields werer typically painted with coats of arms, soa  scene on a shield is very unusual. The fact that this is the only shield in existance today whose painter is known makes it even more unique. It is now located in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.
