SEE MD-11.TXT FOR A LIST OF WHICH *.AIR FILES TO USE WITH WHICH AIRLINE

In this document I will try to briefly explain some of the basic differences used in the MD-11 flight model(s) and how to recognize the different variations. You will also find a table detailing which airline goes with which flight model.

In the description box of each Project Freeware MD-11 you will at the bottom find a line saying something like: "Code: 1D40S". This indicates exactly which flight model is currently installed on that particular MD-11. Each of the five characters of the code describe a characteristic.

First character: "0" or "1". The zero indicates an original MD-11 model, the one indicates and MD-11A1 upgrade version.

Second character: Defines the Maximum TakeOff Weight (MTOW) in lbs. A=602,500; B=605,500; C=610,000; D=618,000; E=625,500; F=630,500

Third character: Indicates the Maximum Landing Weight (MLW) in lbs. 3=430,000; 4=440,000; 5=450,000 6=458,000; 7=471,500; 8=481,500

Fourth character: Indicates the fuel configuration. 0=standard (38,615 US Gallons); 1=one extra tank (standard +1,984 US Gallons); 2=two extra tanks (standard +3,968 US Gallons); E=MD-11ER (standard +3,000 US Gallons).

Fifth character: Indicates the engine used. Either "0" for PW4460, "2" for PW4462, "S" for GE CF6-80C2D1F with short spike, "L" for GE CF6-80C2D1F with long spike.

Example: "Code: 1D40S" indicates an MD-11A1, 618,000 lbs MTOW, 440,000 MLW, no center fuel tanks and GE short spike engines.

Certain combinations were never actually built or can't exist. For example, a first character "0" (original MD-11) will never appear in combination with a fourth character "E" (MD-11ER). To my knowlegde second character "A" or "B", third character "5" or fourth character "2" aircraft were never built. I include them here for the sake of being complete in the models offered by McDonnel Douglas.
