Magic's Top 10 Black Legends

By Flame4003

10. Baron Sengir
Baron Sengir didn’t have very many other black legends to keep the #10 spot in the top ten rating. This card can be great if used right, but it costs 5BBB mana to play. In addition to this when Baron Sengir is returned to an owner’s hand its counters are removed. There are just so many ways to counter this card from being able strengthen a deck. However, even with the vulnerability of this card, Baron Sengir is a great asset to a deck, and will definitely help out a vampire deck.

9. Ascendant Evincar
This card is pretty much like an advanced .Engineering Plague. The great thing about Ascendant Evincar is that not only creatures of the chosen type get -1/-1 instead all non-black creatures get –1/-1. In addition to Ascendant Evincar all black creatures get +1/+1! This is also a creature unlike engineering plague, which makes it more useful than an enchantment. The only reason why I was forced to give this card such a low rating because of the high mana cost. For 4BB most creatures wont even be affected by -1/-1. Still this is a great card to strengthen a deck.

8. Chainer, Dementia Master
First off, all nightmares get +1/+1. This can be a great advantage in a game. Once Chainer, Dementia Master is in play, you are able to get your creatures from your graveyard spontaneously in addition to them being a nightmare. For 3BB this is definitely a great card to strengthen a black deck, or a nightmare deck. The only reason that Chainer, Dementia Master doesn’t get such a high rating is that all nightmares are removed from the game when he is destroyed. This is a hard card to protect, but certainly has potential.

7. Balthor the defiled
Most people underestimate the power of Balthor. Not only does Balthor give all minions +1/+1, but also it allows you to retrieve creatures from your graveyard at a cheap cost. Within turns you can have your whole deck of minions attacking your opponent. Balthor is unbelievable in combos with .Vision Charm, .buried alive, and other cards that allow you to put creatures into your graveyard. Balthor’s only weakness is that it is a 2/2 creature and is extremely vulnerable then first turn you play it.

6. Volrath the Fallen
Not only is Volrath the fallen a 6/4 creature, but you are able to increase its strength and toughness. You can increase its power and toughness multiple times a turn for only 1B! With spells that are at high mana costs, this creature can instantly kill any opposing creature that comes into play. You can give Volrath fear or flying to instantly win the game. The only downside of this creature is that you need to load your deck up with creatures of high mana costs. Just be prepared earlier in the game to withstand any creatures until you are able to get Volrath the fallen in play.

5. Phage the Untouchable
Even though Phage the Untouchable is a hard card to get out with such a high mana cost, its power can not be overlooked. When this card is in play opponents will be struggling to block phage, even though the creatures that are blocking will be destroyed. With .Cloak of mists or .Fear, phage can become an instant game winner. Another instant win is with .Phyrexian Infiltrator. Phage the Untouchable should not be taken lightly when playing against it.

4. Braids, Cabal Minion
Braids, Cabal Minion is a unique black legend. Most black legends either retrieve cards from your graveyard, or rely on their supreme attack power. Just because it is only a 2/2 creature doesn’t mean that it can’t do any damage. For only 2BB each player must sacrifice a creature, artifact or land each turn. This is a great way to lockdown some decks that relies off of creatures of enchantments at high mana costs. It also works well with decks that have low creature costs. This makes it so you can play cheap creatures to sacrafice without losing the land that you need to get your deck going.

3. Commander Greven il-Vec
Commander Greven il-Vec is one of the most powerful black legends that has been introduced to magic the gathering. For only 3BB a player could have a 7/5 fear creature in a game. Creatures of this magnitude are great for decks with Zombify and can be brought into a game even sooner to finish off an opponent. Fear is really the key to this creature, and to winning a game. Fear allows this monstrous legend able to get through opponents defenses easily. Even though a creature must be sacrificed in order to play Commander Greven il-Vec, it deserves the number 3 position.

2. Visara the dreadful
This card deserves it’s great rating. The card is just a simple creature at a great mana cost. For only 6 mana you get a 5/5 flying creature that can tap to destroy a creature. Creatures that are bigger than Visara get destroyed, and creatures that are smaller are killed from is great power and toughness. As long as Visara the dreadful. is in play you are almost guaranteed to win the game.

1. Spirit of the Night
Do I really have to say much more about this card? It is a 6/5 haste, flying, trample, protection from black creature and first strike when attacking! This card definitely deserves the top spot for black legends. Even though it is 6BB, there are other ways to get huge black creatures in play earlier in the game. Having such a great addition to a black deck is almost a definite win. The best part of the card is that it has so many different abilities that strengthen the creature. Spirit of the night is a great card.

That is MTGCouncil's look on the top 10 black legends. Look for other top 10 legend lists to come.
