Tweak UI download it here
Whether you find Tweak UI nestled on the Windows CD or you download it from
Microsoft, here's how to install it:
- Those who can't find it on the CD should head to Microsoft's website and
search for Tweak UI. At last report you could find it here.
If you have Windows 2000, sorry. There's only the 9x version.
- Download Tweak UI to your hard drive.
- Create a temporary folder in your C drive. You can call it "tweakui."
- Run the tweakui.exe file and tell it to extract the files to the folder
you made.
(Now for the tricky part that no one ever tells you.)
- Go into the folder. All the files are named tweakui, but one of them is of
the type "control panel extension." You may have to change your
view to detailed. (Go to the menu option View and select Details.)
- Right-click the file and choose install. If you don't have the option to
choose install, double-click the file.
- It may ask you where to find a particular file. Type in the path to the
folder with all the tweakui files.
Now you will find the tweakui icon in your control panel.
- Go to the Start menu, then Settings, then Control Panel.
- Double-click the tweakui icon.
Voila! You now have Tweak UI at your disposal whenever your little heart
desires it.

The CDDB (a CD Database on the Internet) is one of the coolest things that ever
evolved online. Now owned by Gracenote (who calls it the 'Gracenote CDDB Music
Recognition Service'), the CDDB stores the artist, track, title, and time info
for just about every album I've ever tried on it.
That's saying something: I own close to 900 albums, many from rather obscure
labels. If your CD playing software is set up for it, it can automatically look
up the info and display it.
Possible problem with CDDB
If you've got Win95 or 98, the stock Windows CD player doesn't take
advantage of the CDDB. Download Winamp (or
the Windows Media Player or Music Match or...) and use it as your CD player to
fix that. After you install, make sure Winamp (or the Windows Media Player or
Music Match or...) takes over playing CD Audio. (On Winamp, go to Options >
Preferences > File Types and check the 'Associate with audio CDs button.')
You'll need to have your Internet connection up and running when you load a new
CD into your system. Winamp (or the Windows Media Player or Music Match or...)
will launch, contact the CDDB database and load the info into your player. Then,
next time you pop that CD in, it'll already have it.
If you want to know more about CDDB, go here.
There are about a zillion different plug-ins to choose from at the Winamp
website.

closing each program one by one. After you download and install EndItAll, open it and you'll see a box similar
to the "Close Program" box you get by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete. However, the

The Playa
You
probably have several different media players on your computer already. Most
likely you've got the big three: Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, and
QuickTime. Well guess what? You're gonna need one more. The Playa has one unique
feature that none of the others have: the ability to play partially downloaded
DivX files.
DivX is often called the MP3 of video, mainly because it offers good video
quality at a fraction of the size. For instance, you can take a movie that would
normally fit on a DVD and shrink it down to a file size that fits on a CD.
The problem is that if you want to download a full-length movie from a
peer-to-peer client (like WinMX) you're looking at a 650MB-plus file, and the
odds of getting it in one sitting are rare. So you end up with a partial
download. Even if you have 600MB out of 650MB, the file will not play on a
normal media player. That, my friends, is why you need The Playa.
The Playa also has a couple of slick features that caught my eye. You can watch
videos with a 16x9 wide screen aspect ratio. Go full screen and watch movies in
letterbox, just like a wide screen DVD.
Skins are also available for download if you're looking for a more interesting
interface.

will help you create your own desktop wallpaper, Windows icons, 1-bit
patterns, and custom cursors. And it's free. So, pick up your mouse and
get ready to start making your own images. I'll be showing off my own
creations on today's show.
All you have to do to get started is open the program.
- Choose a category (wallpaper, icon, and so on).
- Pick a size.
- Pick a color palette. These colors will become the paint color
options.
- Start working on your canvas.
The program comes with more than 25 tools that will help you create
your image, tweak color, and position images. Most of the following
tools come standard in commercial software.
 | Line
 | Rectangle
 | Oval
 | Brush tools
 | Eraser
 | Filters |
| | | | |
You can also turn pictures into new creative images. Just import and
convert .jpeg images into pixels.
The feature that I like most is the information bar that lives at the
bottom of the tool.
- Scroll over any part of the interface.
- Look at the box to read about the functions of each part of the
application.
When you finish making your new work of art, save it to your hard
drive and use it however you want.

You have tons of vacation pictures but a limited amount of space for them on
your website. How do you manage your storage and still lay out the pictures in
an easy-to-find, attractive format?
The answer is thumbnails, small postage-stamp-size minipictures. But instead
of firing up your image editor, use Easy Thumbnails. Today Roger will show you
how it works.
Easy Thumbnails gives you a quick, simple way to make uniform thumbnails.
- Choose the folder containing the pictures you want to make into thumbnails.
- Adjust any of the following settings.
 | Picture quality
 | Brightness
 | Contrast
 | Sharpness
 | Rotate the image |
| | | |
- Look at the preview.
- When you're happy with the image, hit Make. The program will create a
thumbnail of the file in the directory of your choice.
- Select Make All to convert a bunch of pictures at the same time.
The only drawback of Easy Thumbnails is that it will save the images only in
the JPEG format. That's not bad, it's just a limitation. Download

I download a ton of MP3 music. I've found that it's easier to download an
entire album as a single file than search for each individual song.
Unfortunately, I end up with one long MP3 file. Today Roger will feature a
hassle-free way to separate the file into individual tracks. I've been waiting
for this for a long time.
Using a file-splitting program to create individual tracks is easier said than
done. Most programs make you convert the files to WAVs before you can edit them.
Then you need to convert them back to MP3. Mp3DirectCut performs cuts, fades,
and volume adjustments directly on the MP3.
- Open your MP3 within mp3DirectCut. You'll get a graphical representation
of the file.
- Find the spaces between tracks.
 | Silence is represented as a blank area.
 | You can use the silence-detection feature to list all the areas that
contain a prolonged period of silence (which you can adjust).
 | Play the MP3 within the interface so you can make sure the section you
want to cut is really the silence between tracks and not just part of the
song. |
| |
- Cut the track.
If you don't download complete albums on MP3, you can still use the program.
MP3s often have excessive silence at the beginning or end of the file. Use
mp3DirectCut to cut that silence out.
Plus, if you're transferring your old record albums or cassettes to your hard
drive, you may also want to break up those large files into smaller MP3 files.

there's one thing I know about traveling, it's that you don't need any help
wasting money. So unless you're some kind of Rockefeller, I suggest saving as
much cash as you can right out of the gate, starting with your hotel room. So
pack up your bags and get ready to save mucho dinero because today Roger's going
to demonstrate a free file that'll find you the best rates in town.
Travelaxe allows you to search up to 16 different travel sites, including
Expedia. It then compiles the information to show you which site is offering the
best deals at each hotel. Currently, Travelaxe searches 45 cities throughout the
United States, including some of the more popular vacation destinations such as
Disneyland, Maui, and San Francisco. But more cities are constantly being added.
I don't know if there are any plans to take Travelaxe worldwide, but I'll keep
my fingers crossed.
The program also rates each hotel using the five-star system; allows you to sort
results based on specific criteria; and includes a list of events in certain
towns such as Las Vegas so you'll know what's going on when you arrive.
Once you've found the hotel you want, Travelaxe will give you all the contact
information you'll need, including a link to the hotel's website, its phone
number, and address.
Now here's Roger's favorite part -- you get a direct link to each hotel's online
booking page. Travelaxe will not only find the best deal for you, it'll help you
book it within the program! Download

you're concerned that sensitive information on your computer could be seen by
the wrong eyes, you might want to try Hide Folders. On today's show Chris and
Roger will show you how it works.
Hide Folders is simple to use and provides a simple service: It makes folders
disappear.
Once it's downloaded and installed, open the program and then drag in the
folders you want to hide. Close Hide Folders and your folders will be gone.
To get them back, open Hide Folders and remove the folders. The free version
only lets you hide two folders and doesn't password-protect the program, but the
developer suggests you assign an intricate hotkey to make it virtually
password-protected.
Bottom line, it won't keep the FBI out, but it should work to keep prying eyes
out of the folders you want to keep private. Download

Now, I know what you're thinking: "Why don't you just use a hotkey

Now that today's CD-ROMs are 40 and 50 times faster than their progenitors
the problem is that they're too fast. Modern CAV (constant angular velocity)
CD-ROM drives require a second or two to spin up before they start reading.
That's not a problem if you're copying large amounts of data, but if you just
want to view a file or two on a CD or play a game from a CD-ROM, that lag can be
annoying.
Worse is that full-speed modern CD-ROM drives are extremely noisy and having a
drive spin up and spin down multiple times just to view a file can accelerate
wear and tear on a drive. In some cases a few CDs can't be reliably read at full
speed. This happens when a disk is warped or scratched so that the CD can be
read only at lower speeds.
Enter the CD-ROM Tool. Although most CD-ROMs on the market have user-adjustable
speed rates, most manufacturers, save ASUS, do not offer the tools for consumers
to use. CD-ROM Tool allows you to adjust the max speed of you CD-ROM drive as
well as the spin-down time, empowering you with the ability to minimize the
amount of unnecessary wear on your drive. Download

When you delete a file, it's not really gone. You can't see it, but the file
is actually still on your hard drive until the operating system overwrites that
part of the hard drive with another file. So what's the big deal? Your security
could be compromised.
Software utilities that find deleted information on your hard drive are readily
available. Someone with the right software can locate your deleted banking
statements, passwords, or virtually any other personal information that you
assumed was deleted.
That's why you need a utility such as Eraser. Eraser not only deletes files, it
overwrites them several times. Think of it as a paper shredder for your PC.
Drag and drop files and folders for manual deletion or schedule certain folders
(like your Internet cache) so that they'll be deleted automatically. Eraser also
adds an option to your Recycle Bin so that you can choose to erase the Recycle
Bin instead of just emptying it.

The party is in full swing. People are dancing and everyone's having a great
time. The DJ seamlessly switches the song on you. One minute it's ABBA, the next
you're grindin' away to Nate Dogg -- and you never miss a beat. Today Roger
shows you how to create these seamless musical transitions at home.
Mixvibes lets you take your MP3 collection to the next level, allowing you to
mix like the masters.
- Manually figure out the beats per minute (BPM) of each song you want to
mix. This is a little tedious, but the built-in beat counter makes it as
easy as possible.
- Choose two songs with similar BPMs and start one up.
- Adjust the tempo of the second song to match the first.
- Line up the beats (this takes some skill) and cross-fade the two. Bam! DJ
magic.
The program isn't perfect. It takes some practice to get the beats to match.
But this hobby is fun and completely free. The other thing this program doesn't
fix is taste, so please mix responsibly.

Remember ACDSee? It was our top pick until its maker started charging $50.
But don't lose any sleep over it, SlowView is incredibly similar to ACDSee and
it won't cost you a cent.
I initially downloaded SlowView because it has an awesome slide show feature.
Upon further review, I found a few highlights:
 | You can easily access and view your images
You can zoom in and out, watch a slide show, go full screen, view images in
folders as thumbnails, and create catalogs of thumbnails for easy retrieval.
 | Perform basic photo-editing tasks
Resize, crop, tweak color, and add effects like blur and pixelization. Most
importantly, it has an undo feature in case you make a mistake.
 | Batch convert images
Change images into a variety of other formats. For example, you can change
your JPEGs into bitmaps.
 | Play multimedia files
Play MP3s, WAVS, Windows Media Files, AVIs, and so on. |
| | |
So if you're looking for a free, easy to use, all-in-one image program, look
no farther. SlowView will do everything you want and more. Download

We all dream. But what do those REM thoughts mean? Today Roger has a unique
alternative to the traditional dream log. Liquid Dream catalogs,
cross-references, and analyzes your dreams.
It tracks characters, locations, themes, and objects, then breaks down commonly
occurring items into categories. Over time you'll be able to graph the frequency
of certain themes.
For example, if you want to know how often you've dreamed of lobsters as opposed
to fame and fortune, this program will show you in a bar graph.
For a really far-out experience, Liquid Dream will teach you lucid dreaming, the
process of taking charge of your subconscious. Follow its directions and you'll
be bending the laws of reality while getting a good night's rest. Download

Streaming audio broadcasts give Internet radio fans endless selections of
content. There's probably a streaming station out there to fit every interest.
Today Roger shows you how to capture a stream that catches your attention and
then how to save it to your hard drive.
Listening to an audio stream once can be rewarding. Recording the broadcast can
be a lot cooler. Use Streamripper as a Winamp plug-in or run it from the command
line to record MP3s from streaming servers.
You'll be able to play the songs whenever you want and enjoy the broadcast
without hiccups of bandwidth pinches. With Streamripper, your stream will no
longer trickle. Download

Have you ever forgotten a password and then stood there scratching your head
staring at a row of asterisks, knowing that the answer is right there but you
just can't see it? As Roger demonstrates on today's show, recovering those lost
passwords is as simple as 1,2,3.
123 Password Recovery will reveal passwords that are hidden by asterisks. This
is how easy it is:
- Click the key icon.
- Drag the key cursor onto the password window.
- Bingo. Your password is revealed in a separate window.
Of course, this program could be used to steal passwords on local machines,
so be aware that just because your password is covered with asterisks doesn't
mean someone can't recover it.
If you need to reformat your hard drive, reinstall your ISP software, or delete
all your cookies (thus clearing Web passwords), and you can't remember what's
under the asterisks, 123 Password Recovery is a must-have utility.

CDs can be tempermental, especially CDs you burn yourself. Like old Nintendo
games, they sometimes refuse to play without a little threatening. Today Roger
has a free file that will help you determine if it's the CD's fault.
When CDs don't play, the problem could be with the computer, drive, or CD
player. Before you toss a CD in the trash, make sure it's really a goner.
CDCheck tests the integrity of the disc to see if it's worth keeping. The
program detects errors in files, and provides a recovery feature for corrupted
data.
Some of your CD coasters just might be more valuable than you think. Check 'em!

Lego blocks are the ultimate toy. They are fun and subversively educational.
What other toy forces you to have fun while learning about spatial awareness,
logic, mathematics, and of course creativity? Today I have a free download that
lets you have the same fun with virtual Lego blocks!
BlockCAD is a CAD (computer aided design) system developed for kids using Lego
blocks as the base elements. Just pick a Lego brick and drop it onto a virtual
Lego board. It's that simple.
BlockCAD also has different colored blocks as well. While I can personally
attest to the fact that this is no replacement for the actual thing, if you or
your kids have a hankering for Legos, BlockCAD is a must-have. Plus it's free.

"How can I find how fast my Internet connection is really working?"
Variations on this question are constantly showing up in the "Call for
Help" inbox. Today, Roger answers this question once and for all with his
Free File of the Day, MyVitalAgent.
MyVitalAgent is an all-in-one utility that monitors your Internet connection to
give you all kinds of information.
 | Data transfer speed
This is probably the most useful piece of information. See how fast data is
moving to and from your computer.
 | Track the length of a transaction.
Find out how long it took for a webpage to load and get a breakdown of the
time between the client, network, and server so you can gauge where any
slowdowns are taking place.
 | Application Report
This cool feature displays your network traffic as a pie chart, graphically
representing the average performance of certain types of applications (such
as FTP, Web, and email).
 | Diagnosis/Prescription
My favorite feature is the pane that attempts to diagnose any problems with
your Internet connection. Then it gives you some possible solutions. For
example, if you try to go to a webpage and nothing pops up, MyVitalAgent
will try to figure out where the problem lies. |
| | |
Whether you're on a dialup or broadband connection, MyVitalAgent is an
incredibly useful tool. Don't let all the technical jargon scare you off. The
program is fairly easy to figure out once you start playing with it.

Eliminating pop-up ads is no easy task. Today Roger shows off a new type of
pop-up killer that makes a difference.
Most pop-up killers stop pop-ups that appear on a list. As you encounter new
variations, you need to add them to your list. Free Surfer works differently.
 | Natural Mode
Stop all pop-ups except those you put on a list without interfering with
your ability to open new windows.
 | Strict Mode
You have to hold down the Shift or Ctrl key for any new window to be
launched. |
|
The program keeps track of the ads that it stops. In the week I've used Free
Surfer, it stopped 193 pop-ups. It will also lock your homepage, effectively
keeping it from getting hijacked, and it includes a panic button that closes all
open browser windows. Download

Internet
Explorer makes it easy to remember a site you may want to revisit by letting you
save the link as a Favorite. But after surfing the Web for a while, you start to
amass a ton of links. Today Roger has a free file that'll make accessing and
organizing your Favorites a lot easier.
Favorites Home Page 1.0 goes through your Favorites folder and creates an HTML
page of all your links. You'll have a webpage on your computer that contains all
your Favorites. Click a link and you're off to one of your favorite sites.
You can either set this page as your homepage or create a shortcut icon on your
desktop. Also, if you create folders within your Favorites folder, the program
will give your links separate headings so they're easier to find.
Favorites Home Page 1.0 may sound like a simple idea but you'll be amazed at how
much time you'll save while surfing the Net. Download
