Master Teimour Radjabov gave a strong finishing kick to the year 2000
by finishing clear first at the December edition of the First Saturday
GM Tournament in Budapest, Hungary.
Scoring
9 points out of the possible 11, Radjabov has also captured his first Grandmaster
norm. He actually only needed 8 points to get the norm as did second
placer Ferenc Berkes who likewise claimed his first GM norm.
With 7 wins,
4 draws and no defeat to his credit, Radjabov's performance rating hit
a high of 2683, that's way ahead of the minimum 2600 limit rating of those considered
to be super Grandmasters. Despite the lofty finish, Teimour could
have still scored even more had he not agreed to draw some games during
the later rounds when he has virtually won the tournament.
The tournament,
organized by Laszlo Nagy, saw three Grandmasters participating: Peter
Lukacs of Hungary, Robert Markus of Yugovlavia and veteran GM Gerardo Barbero
of Argentina.
Host city
of Budapest is famous for now being the hometown of former World Champion
Bobby Fischer. Its favorite son, Peter Leko had likewise claimed
his first GM norm here enroute to become the world's youngest Grandmaster
ever then.
Radjabov
will next compete at the 2001 Corus Grand Master B Tournament in Wijk aan
Zee, Netherlands in January.
