Critics
everywhere heaved a big sigh of relief last night after watching the 26th
Annual People's Choice Awards.
In
a titanic upset, Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace did not win the
top prize award. Also, the widely panned, freshman toilet humor comedy
Shasta McNasty is definitely not the People's Choice.
Instead,
Bruce Willis' summer blockbuster The Sixth Sense was the night's
big winner. The blockbuster phenomenon about a kid who sees dead people
was named the favorite film and dramatic film of 1999, and propelled Willis
to his first dramatic motion-picture actor win.
Eleven
year old Haley Joel Osment who was the heart of the movie, won hands down
the favorite and dramatic motion-picture supporting actor awards. The audience
gave him a standing ovation for his breathtaking performance.
In
the favorite new comedy category, NBC's Stark Raving Mad beat out
low-rated comedies Shasta McNasty, Futurama and Ladies'
Man, per a first-time, Internet voting poll that began in December.
The other favorite of Netizens was NBC's high-rated Friday family drama
Providence.
Aside
from the new cyber-aspect of the CBS-telecast ceremony from Pasadena, California,
previous years' rules ring true: These people are not very original.
Perennial
winners Julia Roberts and Harrison Ford nabbed the favorite and dramatic
motion-picture actress and favorite motion-picture actor nods. Ally
McBeal's Calista Flockhart took home the favorite TV performer award,
and NBC's Friends and ER were named favorite TV comedy series
and dramatic series, respectively.
"It's
almost everybody who voted," quipped Friends star Lisa Kudrow as
she accepted the award on behalf of the 25-30 people who shuffled onstage
to accept the trophy.
