HENMAN RETAINS
TASHKENT TITLE

Tim Henman saw off the challenge of Russian top seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov to win the President's Cup final in Tashkent.

British number one Henman, defending the title he won last year, had little trouble against Kafelnikov, winning 7-5 6-4.

The victory ensures that Henman's world ranking should not fall when the new ATP list is issued on Monday.

Henman had to save a set point in the opening set as Kafelnikov forced him to miss when attacking the net. But gradually Henman got into his stride and put away a series of stunning passing shots to gain control.

The British star, watched by a crowd of more than 3,000, eventually took the opening set and swept the Russian aside in the second with sure defence and relentless attacking play.

Henman came to the net whenever possible, forcing Kafelnikov into desperate defence at the back of the court.

In the end Henman broke his opponent's spirit and ran out a comfortable winner.
