Autism Description
Infantile
autism is also called pervasive developmental disorder. It is considered a
severe mental illness of childhood. It's signs and symptoms usually appear by
the time the infant is 30 months old. Signs and symptoms may include: 1.
Total lack of social interaction or responsiveness. 2.
Dislike of physical contact. 3.
Lack or dislike of cuddling. 4.
Poor Communication. 5.
Bizarre reactions to people, even parents. 6.
Bizarre reactions to the environment. 7.
Child appears to live in his or her own world. 8.
Child does not seem to imitate adult actions, such as waving "bye,
bye." 9.
Sometimes, the child will not talk or the child only mimics sounds. Sometimes,
a child with infantile autism will possess extraordinary talent similar to
the unexplained talents found in the adult "idiot savant." Treatment
recommendations typically combine multiple disciplines and therapies
including special education, medication and behavioral therapy. Psychiatric
or psychological counseling is often recommended for both the child and the
parents. ** from Better Health & Medical Network ** This
month's "Phenom Revisited" column is titled Update on Sue Rubin. Sue has a medical condition called
