Chapter 53, Announcement

Breanna arrived back in Orlando a day before she was scheduled to leave for the tour. When she exited the plane, something didn't feel right. She searched for a familiar face in the crowd while she hid under an oversized baseball cap and sunglasses. "Bree?" She heard a familiar voice ask. Breanna turned around to find Howie inches away without the normal happy expression he wore on his face. "Hi." She finally greeted after a few seconds of awkward silence. "Brian couldn't make it. Something about traffic. I just arrived from New York so he asked me to pick you up. He didn't want to leave you stranded...again." Howie explained with a slight laugh. Breanna thought back to the year before when Brian forgot to pick her up at the airport. She laughed quietly to herself as she remembered how sorry Brian was and how many times he apologized. Breanna watched as Howie picked up her laptop case and carried it towards the baggage claim. "Good flight?" He asked, trying to make conversation. "I think it was. I was asleep the whole time." She replied with a smile. She watched his face for any sign of happiness or anything at all. Nothing. He wore an expressionless mask. When they were together, he was always smiling. Now she saw nothing and it pained her. "Why can't I just take his hand, tell him I'm sorry, tell him I made the biggest mistake of my life? Why can't I? What is holding me back? Why am I so afraid?" She questioned herself. After gathering her lugguage, Breanna and Howie casually walked by a food vendor inside the airport that sent Breanna into a whirlwind. She turned around from Howie quickly. "You okay?" He asked. "No!" She replied as she ran towards the bathroom. She  dropped the newspaper she had been reading on the plane on the floor at Howie's feet. Howie sighed to himself and picked up the paper to read while he waited. He sat down in a row of chairs across from the women's bathroom. He glanced at the paper and realized it was the LA Times real estate section. "How boring." He thought until the headline "Grammy Winner To Settle In Santa Monica" caught his attention. After reading the small article twice, he glanced up at Breanna who was waiting patiently for him to finish. "I thought you didn't have the flu anymore?" He asked. "I don't. It's food poisoning. Lex took me out to dinner last night and ever since I've been sick to my stomach." Breanna explained. Howie stood up and grabbed her luggage as they continued towards the airport exit. "Bree, what's this all about?" Howie finally asked once they made it to his car. Breanna looked at the newspaper in his hand. "Shit...I was going to tell everyone tonight." She muttered. "So you're leaving?" He asked with no expression in his voice. Breanna sat down in her seat and fastened her seatbelt before she spoke. "Yeah, it's time for a change. It's not like I'm needed here anyway. I can still sing while living in LA. There are other things, too, but..." Breanna trailed off.

"You're leaving!?" Brian shouted. "Yes" Breanna whispered once she realized that her best friend wasn't taking the news like she thought he would. "Why? Since when? What the hell are you doing?" Brian continued to shout. "Calm down, Rok." AJ said, sitting on the arm of the couch. "No, I'm not going to calm down until I get a good excuse. Why, Bree?" Brian shouted. Tears started to spring to Breanna's eyes. "I can't tell you, Bri. I wish I could." Breanna replied. Kevin saw the pain in Breanna's eyes and knew that there was something more to the story but he planned to talk to her later when she wasn't upset. "Why can't you tell me? You don't have a reason to leave!" Brian yelled, pacing the room. Breanna sat on the couch with Howie next to her. He had an idea that Brian wouldn't accept the news very well and told Breanna he'd be there to help her if he got too upset. "Bri, stop yelling. She's made up her mind and you're not going to change that." Howie stated. "You of all people should be trying to convince her to stay! Why are you letting her slip away so easily?" Brian questioned. Breanna started to cry while everyone looked at Brian with an accusing eye. Howie felt like taking Breanna into his arms and comforting her, even if it meant just as a friend, but he didn't want to cross the line. He didn't want to ruin whatever friendship remained between them. Acting on instinct, he pulled Breanna by her shoulder towards his chest. She clung to him and cried harder while Howie smoothed down her hair and rubbed her back. Brian exhaled loudly and sat across from Breanna and Howie on the coffee table. "Bree, I'm sorry. I just don't want to lose you. None of us do." Brian said in a calming voice. Breanna pulled herself from Howie's chest and looked into Brian's eyes. She saw all the sincerity and love in them, something she was used to seeing and something she would never forget, but always miss. "I know." She replied, wiping a tear from her eye. She leaned over to hug Brian but the smell of his cologne overwhelmed her. Before she could get lost in his friendly embrace Breanna was running up the stairs. "Is she still sick?" Brian asked the room. "Yeah. Food poisoning." Howie stated as he explained what had happened in the airport earlier that day. Izabel had been in the living room with everyone but had remained quiet. She knew how Brian got when something upset him and decided it was best to remain silent. "I'll go check on her." She stated as she followed Breanna up the stairs.

"Breanna, let me in! I know what's going on." Izabel pounded on the bathroom door. After a minute of silence Breanna shuffled towards the door and let Izabel in. Breanna walked back over to the sink to splash cold water on her face. Brian looked at Howie and nodded his head towards upstairs. Both guys quietly walked up the stairs to follow Izabel and Breanna. They leaned against the door to listen to the women talk but only heard muffled voices. "What's going on?" Brian asked. "Like I of all people know." Howie shot back. They almost fell into the bathroom when Breanna and Izabel opened the door. "How long have you been there?" Breanna shouted, half from fear and half from anger. "Long enough but we couldn't hear anything. Don't worry. Your voices were too low." Brian said, smiling sheepishly because he had been caught red handed. Breanna saw in his eyes that he was telling the truth.

After a few minutes of talking in the hallway Breanna decided to go to bed.   "D, want to help me with something?" Breanna finally asked Howie as she walked down the hall back towards her room. Howie didn't move, he only stood in the hallway looking at Brian. "Did I hear her wrong?" He thought. Brian looked at Howie with large eyes. "GO!" He shouted in a whisper as he pointed to Breanna's bedroom.  When he walked into the bedroom, Breanna was standing on her tip toes on the edge of the bed trying to find a book she couldn't reach. One more move and she would fall. "Bree, stop!" Howie shouted. Breanna looked back at Howie and grinned. "Then you get it!" "Fine, move." He stated as Breanna hoped off the bed. He stood up and reached the top of the book shelf, pulling down a large notebook. "This looks like Nick's book he used to tour with." He stated, looking the mysterious book over. "It is!" She said, as she grabbed it out of his hands. "That it?" He asked. "Yeah, that's all I needed. Thanks, D." She said reading the book over, not glancing up at him. "I'm here whenever you need me." He whispered walking out of the room. Breanna found a page in the book that enchanted her. She wanted to find music that suited her mood. She found Enya's "Memory of Trees" listed, describing her mood perfectly. Breanna found her Enya CD and popped it in the stereo. Within minutes she was asleep.

"Wake up, dammit!" Natasha yelled as she pulled back the curtains to let the sunlight flood into the room. "Get out!" Breanna shouted, throwing the blankets over her head. "No! Our plane leaves in less than an hour and you're still in bed. Nick says you have 20 minutes or we're leaving without you." Natasha said walking out the room. Breanna sat up on her bed and glanced at her calendar. "Shit! The tour!" She shouted, jumping out of bed. "I don't even have time for a shower." She noted, as she tossed a pair of jeans on. She grabbed a see-through violet shirt and put it on over her black bra. She slipped on her black sandals and walked towards the bathroom where she quickly brushed her teeth and washed her face. She looked herself over in the mirror, semi-pleased with her appearance without makeup.

Breanna ran down stairs to find everyone in the living room waiting for her. "We're going to need 3 or 4 cars I think." She said smiling. "Nah, we'll just say good-bye here. We'll see you again when you stop in town." Brian said, grabbing Breanna and hugging her. "Eh, Brian...I can't breath." "Sorry!" Brian said with a shy smile on his face. "Where's AJ?" Breanna asked as she glanced around the living room. "Um, ya know what? I don't know. Probably going for his infamous fashionably late entrance." Kevin joked as Breanna hugged him goodbye. "Hey Bree, Izabel made breakfast. Want some before you leave?" Brian asked. All the color drained from Breanna's face as she ran back upstairs. "What is wrong with her?" Brian asked the room, before turning around to stare at Izabel. "She's fine. The doctor told her that she was stressing too much and it was affecting her stomach. When she starts to worry or stress out, she can't keep food down.  I think she mentioned something about an ulcer." Izabel explained. Everyone in the room seemed to understand considering half of them had gone through the same thing during their career. "I'm fine. Don't worry!" Breanna stated as she walked back down the stairs. "Well, you want to wait for AJ?" Nick asked, searching for his car keys with Natasha glued to his side. Breanna giggled at the couple. They were cute, she had to admit. "No. Fashionably late is going to cause me to miss my flight. We better go!" Breanna stated. With one last goodbye, they were off to the airport.
