Chapter Eight |
Xanda sat out by the pool as the cool air blew through her hair. She watched the stars but was distracted by the noise coming from the house. She turned around to glare at the house but noticed the floating candles in the pool. 'If he wasn't such a prick I'd say he has good taste.' She thought as she stared at the candles. Xanda got tired of waiting for AJ and went to sit on the swing. She kicked her legs back and forth as she stared at the ground with her shoulders slumped. She glanced at her watch that read midnight and decided to give AJ ten more minutes before she went back home. She climbed off the swing and sat back down in front of the pool and took her sandals off. She rolled up her jeans and dipped her feet in the heated pool. She started to think about the things that John had put her through that she didn't tell AJ about. Without realizing it, she started to kick the water out of frustration.
"You keep doing that and there won't be water left in the pool by the end of the night." She heard AJ say. "Sorry, I was thinking." She replied. AJ took a seat next to her and waited patiently until she spoke. "So, did you see your friend?" She casually asked. "Yeah. That fool...he has the nerve to say that he wants to meet you." AJ joked. "The nerve?" Xanda asked with a giggle. "Yeah. Any beautiful woman I meet, he wants to meet her, too." AJ replied. "Doesn't he know that I'm a bitch? Why would he want to meet me?" Xanda joked. "You're not. You and Bri just don't get along. Anyway, he'll be out in a few." AJ explained. "So do you want to know why we don't get along?" Xanda asked out-of-the-blue. "Yeah...what's up with that, anyway?" He questioned as he turned to face her. "I kinda screamed and yelled at him for blasting his stereo. I didn't mean to take it out on him, but he was there and he was doing something that pissed me off. But he had the nerve to call me a bitch to my face and he was insulting me. We are not going to be friends ever, I can promise that." Xanda explained. "What do you mean you took it out on him?" AJ didn't understand what she was talking about and it was obvious that there was more to the story.
"When I found this house today the realtor promised me that it was a quiet neighborhood and that Brian was out of town a lot. I thought that it was the best house so I bought it. When I got home after trading in my rental and buying a new car and signing the paperwork and doing all that stressful crap that goes along with a new house, he was blasting his stereo. I ignored it cause it didn't bother me too much but once I got inside and checked my voicemail on my cell phone, I was just angry! The people I never wanted to talk to again all called me. One right after the other. My mother, John, then Keely. I was just angry!!! Brian just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time doing the wrong thing." Xanda finished explaining.AJ sat there thinking about what she just told him and laughed. "You're right, you two will never get along. You two are both too stubborn." Xanda looked at AJ and smacked the back of his head lightly as she laughed. "Shit! What was that for?" He asked with a shocked and angry expression. "How would you know If I'm stubborn or not. You don't even know me!" She replied. AJ bumped her shoulder with his slightly. "Maybe I want to." He said quietly. "Nah, you don't want to get to know me. I don't think you could handle me." Xanda teased.
AJ was about to protest when the sound of the sliding glass door caught their attention. Xanda had to squint to see who was coming outside because of the bright lights near the back porch. 'Whoever it is, he's damn tall!' Xanda thought as she watched the man walking towards AJ and herself with a few beers in his hands. "Hey man." The man greeted as he handed AJ a beer. He seemed a little young and shy as he stood facing Xanda and AJ. Xanda couldn't make out his face because the light was coming from behind him. "Hey Nick. This is Xanda. Xanda, this is another one of my bros, Nick." AJ introduced. Xanda took her feet out of the pool and stood up to get a better look at Nick. When Nick saw the light reflecting off of her face his solemn expression turned into a large smile. "Alexandra!" Nick greeted as Xanda gave him a large hug. "I never thought I'd see you again." She smiled. "Ah shit, you're not one of Nick's old 'Fuck Buddies' are you?" AJ whined. Nick shot AJ a glare while Xanda looked at him with shock. "His WHAT!?" Xanda asked. "Nothing!" Nick stated. "I guess she's not." AJ smirked as he took a gulp of his beer. "'Fuck buddy?'" Xanda questioned Nick. "That was a long time ago." Nick shrugged. "Nick used to like the ladies. A lot!" AJ explained. "Maybe I should just leave it at that." Xanda said as she accepted the beer that Nick was handing to her. The three friends continued to talk and tease each other until Kevin came outside.
"Hey guys? And lady?" Kevin asked as he came outside. "What's up, Kev?" Nick asked. All three of them were sitting together giggling, laughing, and drinking beer with their feet in the pool. "I hate to be the party pooper..." "Yeah right!" Nick and AJ shouted. "BUT it's 2AM and the party's over." Xanda looked at AJ and Nick and smiled. "At least I don't have to drive home." Xanda told AJ as she stuck out her tongue at Nick. The two had become quick friends since meeting the night before and had taken on a humorous love-hate friendship. Instead of saying kind words to one another like normal friends would, they opted to insult each other playfully. Nick wiggled his eyebrows and looked at AJ. "What are you two planning?" She asked with fright in her voice. "Nah man, that's cold. Literally. It's November, we can't do that." AJ told Nick. Nick's smile became larger when he noticed that Kevin had turned around to go back inside to help Brian clean up. Kevin was about to take the first step into the house when it occured to him that something was going on. "No you don't. Fellas, that's wrong." Kevin said as he walked back over to where they were sitting. "Don't worry! We're not gonna do anything. At least I'm not. I'm not gonna score any points by pissing her off. God knows Brian didn't." AJ joked as he stood up before turning around to help Xanda stand up. Nick looked up at AJ while sitting on the ground waiting for an approval before AJ looked down at Nick and winked. Xanda did her best to ignore Nick while she tried to carry on a coversation with Kevin. Nick listened to the conversation waiting for the right time to strike as he stood up and stretched.
"So, you work at that firm? I mean, you're the head of it?" Kevin asked Xanda. "Yeah. It's a big job but I've been working hard for this position ever since I graduated from college." Xanda was about to continue when she felt large, warm arms wrap around her waist, lifting her off the ground. "Ohmigod!" She shouted as she felt the warm water engolf her. When she surfaced, she heard a large crash. She opened her eyes to find AJ and Kevin laughing hysterically. "Kevin! You prick!" Nick shouted from behind Xanda. Xanda turned around laughing and shivering once she realized that Kevin had pushed him in after Nick had thrown Xanda. "Thank you, Kevin. And YOU....!" She glared at AJ who smiled back at her innocently. "I didn't do anything!" He replied. "Bullshit." She stated as she crawled out of the pool with Kevin's help. "I'm an innocent civilian." AJ stated. "And I'm a virgin!" She countered. "Eh Xanda, TMI girl." Nick said while crawling out of the pool. By that time Howie was outside laughing along with Kevin and AJ. "Man, you beat me, Kev! I've been plotting to toss Nicky into the pool in the middle of winter for years." Howie laughed. It was obvious that he was slightly buzzed. Brian heard the laughing coming from outside and peered out the glass. "Hey what happened?" He asked as he walked out the backdoor. "We had an accident." AJ replied. Kevin stood there laughing while the pretty woman next to him was soaking wet and giggling. Nick stood behind her wet himself but he was hardly laughing. "Yo Frack, you look like a drowned rat." Brian teased. Brian looked the woman over and realized that she looked familiar. She glared at Brian before turning her attention back to AJ. "Since the party's over, wanna come over to hang out at my place?" "Hangin' out? Is that what they call it now?" Brian teased the woman who obviously cringed at his presence."Too much blood in one area." Xanda mumbled under her breath while AJ laughed. "I didn't mean just him, I meant any of you." She explained. "They shouldn't drive." Brian pointed out. "I live next door." Xanda shot at him. Brian finally recognized Xanda and rolled his eyes. "Oh...I didn't recognize you without the screaming and yelling." Brian stated as he turned around to walk back inside."Don't mind him. When he's slightly drunk he holds grudges." Kevin tried to explain."So do I." Xanda replied as she glared in the direction in which Brian exited.
