Chapter Fifty Five |
| Xanda looked up at Brian through blurred
vision and didn't know what he was doing but there was no sign of hostility in his eyes.
She slowly complied and stood up on weakened legs. "I got you." Came Brian's
calm yet soothing voice. Xanda didn't want to argue, she didn't have the strength. As they walked into her living room Xanda saw that her knee was bleeding. She couldn't feel the pain but knew it would hit her the next day. Brian helped Xanda sit down onto the couch and went into her kitchen to get her a glass of cool water. Upon walking into the kitchen Brian noticed the empty bottle of Vodka and assumed Xanda was drunk beyond words. He tried to ignore the side of him that was telling him not to give in to her but he knew he was doing a good thing. Something brought upon her breakdown and he assumed it had to do with AJ. After a moments hesitation Brian walked into the living room with the glass of water. "Here. Drink this. It'll help clear your mind." Brian stated quietly as he slowly handed it to Xanda. He looked as if he was afraid of her. "I'm not going to rip your arm off." She mumbled as she took the glass from him. After a few sips she realized that he was still standing next to her. She glanced up at him and saw the confused look in his eyes, unsure if he should sit down or leave as quickly as possible. Trying to help him make the decision Xanda looked into his face and grinned, "Thanks." Brian nodded his head and took a seat in the lounge chair across from the couch. "You're welcome." He mumbled. When she was finished Xanda placed the glass on top of the coffee table then settled back into the couch. She owed him an explanation and a thank you. Brian watched her blank face as she sat in deep thought. He wasn't sure what he was doing there but he knew it was possibly his only chance to clear his conscious. He owed her an explanation and an apology for the way he had been throwing her breakup with AJ in her face. "Um, I saw the bottle in the kitchen. You didn't drink all..." "I'm not drunk, Brian." Xanda interrupted. "Oh, all right. That's good." Was all he could think to say. "Why are you being nice to me?" Xanda quickly asked when she couldn't stand the silence between them. "Excuse me?" Brian coughed, "You just looked upset. I figured you could use some help." "But from you?" She questioned. "Hey, I didn't come here to argue. I just came to make sure that you were okay." He calmly replied as he fought hard to keep his temper in check. "Oh. ...thank you." She solemnly replied. "Care to talk about it?" He asked. "Not really." Xanda stated. Without giving any warning Xanda stood up and went upstairs and slammed her door. *** Half an hour had passed and it started to alarm Brian. He had remained in the house to keep an eye on her and now she was locked away in one of her rooms. Not sure what to do Brian decided not to just sit there and went upstairs to see if she was okay. Walking quietly down the long hallway Brian checked out every room and was impressed at how Xanda had decorated them with different styles. Every room had a modern with a Renaissance feel to it except for one. The walls were painted with a soft green. The trim had little animals standing in Noah's Ark. In the back of the room sat a large chest. Brian knew it was none of his business but his curiosity was getting the best of him. Kneeling in front of the chest, Brian slowly opened it and was surprised to see a Noah's Ark blanket folded across the top. When he removed the blanket he grinned at all the baby clothes and toys he found beneath. A book below had a small film of dust along the edges like it had been sitting out in the open for quiet awhile before being put away. Again, Brian's curiosity got to him and he picked up the book and opened it. Two pieces of paper fell out onto his lap. Wondering what they were he unfolded them and began to read. After a moment he little out a small gasp and quickly folded the papers again. But something caught his attention. Wondering if he had read wrong Brian found himself unfolding the papers again and scanning for the date. He wasn't wrong; the dates matched. The dates on the papers were exactly the same. "November 4th? Wait, that's today!" Brian realized. Before long Brian stood up and brushed his pants off. After closing the mysterious bedroom door, Brian grabbed his cell phone and quietly ran down the stairs until he got out onto the back porch. Without missing a beat Brian clicked "4" and waited as the other line rang. "AJ!?" Brian asked in a loud hushed voice. "Rok? What's up? What's wrong?" AJ asked when he heard the concern in Brian's voice. "Nothing. I mean, I'm not sure. Do you have ten minutes cause I think you have a little explaining to do." Brian stated. "What!? What do I do wrong, now? Wait a minute, I didn't do it!" AJ quickly defended. Brian laughed softly. "No, it's nothing you did. I just need some answers. Got a few?" "Yeah, shot. What is it?" AJ questioned. "It's about Xanda..." Brian started to explain. "Oh man...what now? Did she bite off your manhood?" AJ joked. "No. Nothing like that. Ya know what, this'll go by a lot faster if I explain what's happened."
