Chapter Twenty-Seven |
"I love you."
"I know you think you do."
"Alexandra..."
"AJ, I gotta go! All these files are piling up on my desk. I miss you! Bye!" Xanda quickly said into the phone before hanging up with a sigh. The last few months were a blur. Things with AJ were much more serious than she had wanted them to become. He proclaimed his love for her as often as he could but she could never bring herself to say it back. She cared for him deeply, there was no doubt about that, but there was something missing.
"Look what I've got for you!" Susan said happily as she walked into Xanda's dark and dreary room. "Oh god, who died?" She questioned when she saw the gloomy look on Xanda's face. "Huh? Oh, no one, Susan. It's just been a long week." Xanda mumbled as she sat up straight and tried to put her hair back into place. "Uh-huh." Susan replied, not believing a word that Xanda uttered. "Anyway, these are for you." Susan grinned as she took a seat across from Xanda. "What are for me?" Xanda asked back. "Hello? Is anyone home? The flowers I just placed in front of you. It's scary to think that you run this company." Susan stated as Xanda looked the flowers over. "Who are they from?" Susan asked eagerly. "Who else?" Xanda mumbled as she took the large card out of the arrangement. Susan watched as Xanda read the card over and over. "Oh, god..." Xanda said under her breath. "What is it?" Susan asked when she realized that it wasn't from AJ. "They're from John and the company. From this very minute I am officially on vacation leave and I'm being ORDERED to get laid by my 'busy boyfriend'." Xanda giggled. "What!? From John?" Susan was exasperated. "Well, the getting laid part was a little side note from Keely." Xanda replied with a silly grin.
"Well, go home and get packing!" Susan ordered. "I can't, Suse. I've got all this work to finish. I have to fire that college preppy down stairs in the mail room and then I have to figure out why these numbers aren't balancing. THEN I have to figure out which of these damned brokers lost $40,000 for one of our newest clients and then we need to think of a way to get that money back before the client finds out what happened. I just have too much work to do." Xanda said. "Whoa, Xanda! Take a breath between sentences! First off, I can do ALL of that. I have the New York office on speed dial if we need anything and the head of the LA office is coming to take your place, so, go home! We don't need you here!" Susan shouted with a laugh as she tried to usher Xanda to the door. "Wait! What about the LA office!?" Xanda shouted as Susan pulled her up from her desk. "We've been planning to get you out of here forever! Everything's set to go. Now, the only problem we have is getting you to actually leave." Susan replied as she pushed Xanda to the door. "I don't know about this, Susan..." Xanda sighed. "Here's your purse, your jacket, and your flowers. Now, go!" Susan shouted. Xanda stood in the doorway for a second while she absent-mindedly put her jacket on.
"I guess I do need a break. I need to figure things out with Alexander." Xanda said quietly but mostly to herself. "What's wrong with you and AJ?" Susan asked. Xanda shrugged her shoulders in response before she started to walk out of the office. "Nuh-uh! Get back here! You're not going any where until I hear what's going on." Susan stated as she pulled Xanda back into her office and shut the door. "Which is it? First you want me to leave then you want me to stay." Xanda laughed. "I want you to leave AFTER you tell me everything." Susan demanded. "There's nothing to tell. I'm confused but he sure as hell seems fine and dandy." Xanda sarcastically stated before taking in a deep breath. Xanda sat at her desk while she absent-mindedly fingered the petals of the flowers. Susan sat quietly as she studied Xanda. What she could never figure out about Xanda was how strong she was yet how innocent and vulnerable. She could talk down to anyone but she could never admit her true feelings. "So? What's the problem?" Susan pushed. "He loves me. He tells me he loves me all the time. He can't say it enough, like saying it is going to make me feel it, too." Xanda quickly replied. "But don't you love him?" Susan asked quietly. "I don't know, Suse. I don't think I do. Isn't it one of those questions that is 'yes' or 'no' not 'maybe'? If it's a 'maybe' doesn't that mean it's a 'no'?" Xanda asked back with pleading eyes. "Not necessarily. A maybe is a maybe. You don't know. You're confused. You need to search yourself for the answer. Maybe if you're around him more then you'll figure out your feelings for him." Susan encouraged. "That's what I was afraid of." Xanda mumbled. "Or maybe you're just afraid of falling in love again and having a repeat episode of the infamous John affair." Susan replied with a smirk that caused Xanda to smile. "Thomas Crown Affair." Xanda murmured. "Oh, Pierce Brosnan!" Susan squealed. "Damn, now I need a cold shower." Xanda laughed. "It's good to hear you laugh. Maybe AJ can keep you laughing from now on." Susan stated, breaking the happy moment between the two women. "And what if he can't?" Xanda questioned. "Well, then you'll know your answer, won't you?"
Xanda thought for a moment before nodding her head. "Well, I better go home and get packed." Xanda smiled at the thought but frowned when she realized that she would have to confront her feelings for AJ. "Need to me take care of Roadie for you while you're gone?" Susan offered. "No need. AJ took him on tour to remember me. Speaking of which, I have to figure out what city they're in and what hotel." She stated as she stood up and stretched. "No need. Howie and I have been working on this for a week now. Your plane ticket is waiting at the airport. You leave in two hours so you better get your ass outta here!" Susan laughed. "What!? You and Howie have been planning this? I knew I should have never introduced you two." Xanda laughed back. "I'm glad you introduced us. He's the one who encouraged me to make peace with my ex. Because of that, we're becoming friends again. It's great! Anyway, enough of this bullshit. I was trying to get you out of here for a reason. If you miss your flight I'm gonna have five pissed off men on my hands." Susan said as she tried to push Xanda out the door again. "Five? You mean four, if I miss my flight. If I don't miss it, then there will be one pissed off man." Xanda laughed. "Still not getting along with Brian?" Susan questioned. For some reason Susan was under the impression that Xanda and Brian were on neutral ground. "Let me put it this way, Susan. Touring with Brian will NOT be a vacation. I'd much rather stick around here." Xanda explained as she walked away. "Eh, that's not good. Well, think on the bright side of things. In less than 8 hours you'll be having some terrific sex!" Susan shouted to Xanda as she walked down the hallway to the elevator. Xanda blushed slightly as everyone turned to see who Susan was talking with. Xanda thought for a moment before it occurred to her that SHE was in charge of those people. She could say or do what she pleased. "Trust me, Susan! If the tour bus is a rockin', don't come a knockin!'"
