Chapter Forty-Eight |
Kevin and AJ ate quietly in the back of a secluded McDonald's. The few people in the building who seemed to recognize the guys were used to them coming around and never paid them any attention anymore.
"So, what are you doing?" Kevin asked as he came back from the bathroom to find AJ writing. AJ looked up at Kevin, peering above his sunglasses, with a grin.
"I'm making my shopping list!" AJ announced as he handed Kevin the paper.
"Man, AJ, you better have Brian's heart doctors on speed dial 'cause you'll be needing them in a couple of years if you keep eating this crap." Kevin laughed.
Time passed as AJ continued to add more to his grocery list.
"Are you done yet?" AJ asked impatiently as Kevin ate one French fry at a time while staring out the window.
"Huh? Oh...I guess." Kevin replied with a little hesitation.
"What's up, Kev?"
"Just thinking...that's all." Kevin stated with a small smile.
"About the girl from last night?" AJ accused with a grin.
"Nah, just life. Anyway, ready to go and buy the things that will send you to your grave?" Kevin asked as AJ stood up, nodding his head while taking a long sip from his iced tea.

Nick wondered around his room at Brian's house waiting for Brian to finish getting ready when his cell phone went off. Nick looked at his caller ID and grinned as he quickly answered it.
"Two calls in one day? You miss me already. I knew you'd give in soon." He laughed.
"Hi, Nick." Keely replied solemnly.
"Key, what's wrong?" Nick asked after becoming alarmed by the tone of her voice.
"Well, I'm being promoted!" Keely tried to explain with fake enthusiasm.
"That's great! Cool, girl, I knew you'd move up soon. It was only a matter of time..." Nick rambled on with a smile.
"But Nick..." Keely tried to interrupt.
"You've got talent and an attitude to match but I guess that could come in handy so you can boss the 'little people' around..." Nick continued to speak.
"NICK!" Keely finally shouted.
"What?"
"I'm being relocated. The promotion is for another firm in London. I'm leaving the country, Nick." Keely explained quietly.
"What!? What about us?" Nick asked with disbelief. Keely laughed softly with sympathy.
"Nick, there was never any 'us'. We were friends, we *are* friends and that's all we'll ever be." Keely tried to clear up as tears started to build.
"But I thought that we had something going..." Nick tried to argue quietly.
Keely shook her head, "No, Nick. We didn't."
"So, when do you leave?" He asked as he tried to fight the lump that was building in his throat.
"A week or two. I gave John my notice the minute I got off the phone with the new firm." Nick sighed and realized that he wasn't going to change her mind.
"Well, I'm happy for you." He tried to say with a smile in his voice.
"Thank you. It means a lot to me to hear you say that." Keely said with relief.
"Anyway, give me a call before you leave. I gotta go cause Brian's waiting for me. I'll talk to you soon." Before Keely had a chance to reply Nick had hung-up.
"I love you." She whispered as she wiped the tears away. A moment later she got got up to start packing for the new life she would start the old one she would leave behind.

"Just park the damn car. The fans won't bother us in a grocery store." AJ complained as Kevin drove around looking for a spot.
"There. Are you happy?" Kevin asked as he parked the car in a handicapped parking spot.
"No, you dumb shit! You're gonna get a parking ticket. You could at least park the car where it's legal!" AJ yelled as Kevin rolled his eyes and put the car in reverse.
"You care to drive instead?" Kevin asked sarcastically as he drove around to find another spot.
"Sure! Pull over." AJ laughed.
"I was kidding. I know how bad you drive. No, the entire world knows how much you suck at driving. Hell, I don't think even your biggest fan would trust you with their car." AJ was about to protest but knew it was worthless. Kevin was right.
"Well, let's go spend your money!" Kevin grinned as he hopped out of a car. AJ bitched and complained about Kevin's insisting they park where no fans would notice his car as he climbed out of it. "Move your scrawny ass." Kevin shouted over his shoulder as he briskly walked past AJ into the store.
"Man, wait up!" AJ yelled as he jogged to catch up with Kevin.
Once inside the store Kevin grabbed a basket and AJ hopped on the front of it. "What do you think you're doing?" Kevin groaned.
"Shoppin'! Now, stop your bitchin' and push the damned cart!" AJ demanded.
"Oh this looks REAL grown up, AJ! No, fan's won't notice my car but they'll sure as hell notice you." Kevin rolled his eyes and started to push the car with AJ attached to the front of it. Kevin pushed the cart up and down every isle while AJ grabbed things left and right off the shelves to toss into the cart. As they shopped they guys continued to talk.
"So you dig Dayna from last night but you don't want to peruse her? I don't get you, man." AJ laughed as he tossed a 24-pack of coke into the cart.
"I want to get to know her as a woman first, AJ, before I decide if I want a relationship or not. I don't hop into relationships as easily as you do." Kevin explained.
"Woah! Wait a minute! 'As easily' as me? Shit..." AJ argued with a shake of his head.
"Well, I mean..."
"I know what you mean, Kev." AJ replied.
"Well, I think we got everything." AJ laughed as he looked down at the loaded cart.
"Do you plan to get off the cart any time soon cause this is getting harder to push." Kevin complained as he tried to steer the cart toward the check-out lanes.
"Shhh, man! I hear some laughing coming from the bakery section. Sounds like some pretty ladies..." AJ cooed as Kevin shook his head.
"No! No more flirting! I still have a hangover from the other night and I don't think I can handle any more women around me." Kevin complained.
"Bite your tongue, man! There's no such thing as not being able to handle being surrounded by beautiful ladies." AJ scolded. "Let's just check it out. Humor me."
"Fine..." Kevin sighed as they steered the cart towards the bakery.
As they guys got closer to the bakery they noticed a slender blonde and brunette tossing food back and forth while making sexual comments.
"My type of women." AJ said as he peered over his glasses to get a better look.
Kevin soon recognized the women and grimaced at the thought of what might go down that night as soon as everyone recognized each other. The blonde quickly turned her back to the guys and elbowed her friend.
"Brace yourself." Kevin mumbled to AJ as he hoped off the front of the cart to walk up to the women for a nice chat.
"Brace myself?" AJ laughed at Kevin. Before he had a chance the brunette had spun around right before her chin hit the floor.
AJ gasped. "Xanda."
