"Midnight Surprise"

By Gina Giannetti

This short story is written about the night that my boyfriend Joe and I sort of 'decided', in a way, to go to his prom together. It happened over an almost week long period, but I kinda smushed everything into one night. You'll understand when you read it. I hope you enjoy it!
I sat down next to my best friend Kim as the guys sat down in the seats and sofas around the silver table.
The Witches Brew is one of our favorite places to hang out. The ceiling is drapes of satin, and the walls are fuzzy tiger print material. There were no lights, only small candles on each table. There was awesome Goth type music playing, and there were skulls and Gothic items everywhere. Its just an incredible atmosphere. Thats why we love coming here.
The waiter came and greeted us. Everybody ordered their food and coffee. I ordered a cappuccino and then turned to talk to my friends.
I didnt even get that far, because as I turned, I laughed at the sight of Ken downing sugar from the sugar shaker. That kid is incredibly insane. He makes me look sane!
Phil then proceeded to grab the sugar shaker from Ken, much to Kens dismay, and downed some himself. He then passed it to Kim, who took a huge amount and was met afterwards by an applause from the group.
     Your turn, Gina!
She then handed it to me. I laughed and downed as much as I could, but it didnt take long before I choked. Everyone laughed, and I passed it to George who took some, and to Joe, who downed a small amount at a time. We continued laughing for a while, playing with our food once it got there, talking about everything possible. Eventually, the topic of our proms came up in the conversation.
After our prom, why dont we go out together, all of us? suggested Kim. Everyone nodded. It was a really good idea! All of a sudden, Phil stood up and pointed at Joe and me.
I think you two should go to our prom together!
I was taken aback. I felt my cheeks begin to grow hot as I blushed. A ton of questions ran through my mind. Who would want to go the prom with me? Certainly not somebody like Joe! Why in the world would Phil say that? How should I respond? I quickly looked at Ken and George, who were showing physical signs of approval at the idea. I looked at Kim and she shrugged. I decided to take my chances and leaned over to Joe.
I'm not going to force myself on anyone, especially not you, Joe.
Joe nodded. Well, Ive been looking for a prom date, and I'd really like it if you went with me.
Woah. I almost fell over! Someone wanted to, voluntarily, take me to his prom!
This is almost, at this point, incomprehensible to me. To think, someone as sweet and intelligent and fun as Joe would want to take me of all people to his prom! Stuff like this doesnt happen to people like me!
Thats what made me make my decision. Well, if you really want to, I'd love to go the prom with you!
     Joe smiled. Really?
I smiled back. Sure! Why not? I think itd be fun going to the prom with you! You can introduce me to all your other friends and we can have a good time!
Joe cheered. Great! Now I have a date for the prom!
Phil nodded. Its about damn time, too!
After a little more talking, we paid for our stuff and decided to go home. It was almost me and Kims curfew anyways.
As we walked out of The Brew, Joe pulled me aside.
Listen, I feel kinda awkward that Phil suggested we go to the prom together. I was kindawellworking up the nerve to ask you myself.
My heart almost stopped. He was going to ask me?
So, Gina, Will you go the prom with me?
This was almost too much, but at this point, I didnt even need to think about it. I smiled. I would be delighted.
Joe grinned. Yes, theres nothing like a night out with a pretty girl!
I blushed immediately at the comment. He smiled at me and took my hand, and we walked to Phils car so he could drive us home. Wow, talk about a Midnight Surprise!
