My name is XXXXXX. I have a question for you. I am hoping you can give me some insight into this issue or at least point me in a direction that I may be able to find more information.
A little info on my background and current status. I was married for XX yrs. We have X children. I took our children and left my husband because of abuse and moved from XX to XX (where I have family).
I set us residency in XX. I was in this state for over X years when our divorce became final. He only saw the kids one time in a supervised setting ordered by the courts in this X year period. He has not seen the kids one time in the last X yrs. Although he was incarcerated for X of those years. He was court ordered to pay child support to which he pays occasionally. The amount he was ordered to pay was $XXX.XX (all of the kids together) but the child support enforcement agency raised it to $XXX. He is now petitioning the court to get it reduced to $XXX (all of the kids together).
He has made it clear he does not want to pay child support. I can definitely use the money but can get along without it as well. Our kids do not know him very well. They have phone contact with him. They do not enjoy talking to him. They would rather not have to! I do know they are not old enough to form an opinion considering all issues.
My questions are.........
Can I legally request their father relinquish his parental rights? Would he then be free of any obligations to pay child support?
Considering his past felony records and his abusive past I would really like to see him give up his parental rights. I do believe he would actually agree to this if he would be free from paying child support.
I hope this makes sense to you. If not feel free to ask me questions. I am just trying to find out if this is a reasonable thing to ask and if it can be done legally.

Note - Since many of these questions were of a legal nature, I referred these potential clients to the appropriate legal resources available to them as well as providing them with some investigative information that would be helpful.
