The Post-Sweeps Star Wars For a couple of months, anyway, the sweeps races are on hold, but a few celebs still have some very special guest-star appearances planned. Scheduled for April: Rosie O'Donnell pops up on The Practice; filmmaker Kevin Smith, whose Clerks animated series has been pushed back from March to a May 31 premiere date, guests on his favorite show, Law & Order; and Garry Shandling gets up close and personal with his Larry Sanders Show "crush" David Duchovny when he appears on an X-Files episode written and directed by Duchovny. On the show called "Hollywood A.D." and tentatively scheduled to air April 30, Shandling plays Mulder in a Tinseltown-movie version of The X-Files; Duchovny's real-life wife, Ta Leoni, plays Scully, and the real Mulder--er, actually, Duchovny--shows up on the set to make sure he's portrayed accurately. Got all that? Never mind, the important thing to remember is: no flipping.

Another 'Files' Movie

By MICHAEL STARR

David Duchovny and Garry Shandling -- who "flirted" on HBO's "Larry Sanders Show" -- are carrying their relationship one step further.

Shandling tells Pat O'Brien on tonight's "Access Hollywood" that he'll star in an upcoming "X-Files" episode directed and written byDuchovny, who stars as FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder opposite Gillian Anderson's Dana Scully.

In the plot, a Hollywood studio is turning "The X-Files" into a big-screen movie, with Shandling playing Mulder and Tea Leoni (Duchovny's real-life wife)playing Scully.

"He comes to see if I'm depicting him accurately," Shandling says of Duchovny/Mulder. "And in that 'X-Files' episode, I make out with Tea Leoni. So I just end up having projects where I make out with my friends' wives." Duchovny appeared as himself on the fictional "Larry Sanders Show," in which it seemed he had a crush on paranoid host Larry Sanders (Shandling).

O'Brien was interviewing Shandling for his new movie, "What Planet Are You From?"

Shandling to play Duchovny playing Mulder?

It's hard to tell whether it's all a big put on, but Garry Shandling, in an interview taped for tonight's (Tuesday) Access Hollywood, says that he'll appear on an upcoming episode of the X-Files about a Hollywood studio that wants to turn the adventures of characters Mulder and Scully into a movie. Shandling says that he will portray the actor playing Mulder and Ta Leoni (X-File's star David Duchovny's wife in real life), will be the actress playing Scully. In one scene Mulder (Duchovny) visits the set "to see if I'm depicting him accurately," Shandling relates. "I make out with Ta Leoni. So I just end up having projects where I make out with my friends' wives."

Duchovny Chides Fox Millionaire Show

.c The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES (AP) - David Duchovny calls the Fox network's "Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire" a travesty.

It was a travesty when it was popular. Now it's a travesty that it's a hoax," the "X-Files" star told TV's syndicated "Entertainment Tonight." He suggested that Fox broadcast a sequel called "How to Marry a Broke Girlfriend Beater."

The Feb. 15 special was a ratings sensation that quickly backfired after criticism by women's groups and revelations that millionaire Rick Rockwell had been accused of threatening an ex-girlfriend. He denies the accusations.

Duchovny, whose show also airs on Fox, is angry that shows appealing to greed draw such large audiences.

"They just throw a million dollars at people and half the country tunes in. ... And what does that say about our country?" But he admits he also tunes in. "They're fun to watch. I watch them too. They're like a bad smell that you got to keep smelling."

Carter Won't Do X-Files Sans Stars

Chris Carter, creator of Fox's hit television series The X-Files, says he's not interested in doing an eighth season of the show without its two stars. And that may be problematic: Though Gillian Anderson (FBI Agent Dana Scully) still has a year left on her contract, David Duchovny's (FBI Agent Fox Mulder) runs out at the end of this season.

"I'm not interested in doing it without David and Gillian," Carter told USA Today. It's an open question whether Duchovny will sign up again--he has said he's tired of the show, and he's also suing Twentieth Century Fox for a larger slice of the show's syndication earnings. The fates of the show and the lawsuit are expected to be resolved by next week, USA Today reported.

Fox executives have said that they want the show to return and are willing to do whatever it takes to bring it back. Sunday, Feb. 20, marked the series' 150th episode, a cinema verite installment in the style of Cops.

FATHER FIGURE

The truth may be on fox for one of Roswell's alien teens Could the search for their true parents be over for at least one of Roswell's extraterrestrial high schoolers? Anything's possible. For Michael Guerin, the brooding bad-boy of the alien teen trio (which includes siblings Isabel and Max Evans) the hunt could easily end-not in space but with the X-Files Fox Mulder.

Both X-Files and Roswell fan have notice the physical similarities between actors Brendan Fehr and David Duchovny, and these conspiracy theorists would like to believe that the FBI agent is Michael's biological dad-the result of a human-alien sex experiment conducted without Mulder's knowledge.

In an attempt to separate what could be the ultimate plot twist from the ultimate rumor, TV GUIDE put the father question to Jason Katims, the creator and executive producer of WB's Roswell. "I can't confirm or deny this rumor," the usually open Katims replies, adding, "Maybe something is happening that I'm not aware of."

Fox Planning "X-Files" Spinoff

by Julie Keller

It's the revenge of the nerds, X-Files-style.

Fox, home of the Gillian Anderson- and David Duchovny-led supernatural drama, has green-lighted a spinoff based on the show's beloved, dorky Lone Gunmen.

The network is banking on the proven appeal of Byers, Frohike and Langley, the Mulder-worshipping Paranoid Conspiracy Theorists played by Bruce Harwood, Tom Braidwood and Dean Haglund, to bring it a much-needed ratings boost.

The trio have often carried entire episodes of the X-Files when Duchovny and Anderson were MIA, and episodes where Mulder and Scully enlist their services always garner strong ratings.

Also on board is X-Files creator Chris Carter, who's signed on to produce the pilot for next fall. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the show is being planned as a light drama with plenty of comedy-"think Mission Impossible for computer geeks."

Details are not yet available from the network on specifics, but the Reporter also says the show will also feature a competing theorist in the form of a gorgeous young woman whom the trio of geeks lust after.

The plugged-in X-Philes, who incidentally have elevated the Gunmen to cult status with several Web pages, are thrilled.

"Woo-Hoo!" writes one on the aus.tv.x-files newsgroup.

"I will be quite happy to watch the show," says another.

Fox, meanwhile, has yet to decide the fate of Carter's original brainchild. On Tuesday, Sandy Grunshow, chairman of Fox Television Entertainment Group, said the X-Files chances of survival next season are "50-50."

Still, the prognosis is not good. Duchovny's contract is up this season and he is suing the network over a recent syndication deal. Anderson is contractually bound to return next season but has also voiced her desire to retire from the show. However, both have said they'd do more X-File movies.

Fox, SAG Stay Firm On Fan Sites

Doug Herzog, president of 20th Century Fox Television, sympathizes with fans who plan to protest the studio's crackdown on unauthorized Web sites devoted to television programs such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The X-Files. At the same time, though, he said his hands are tied.

"It's always nice to see fans passionate and getting behind shows," Herzog told CNN online. "But at the same time, these are characters and trademarks that belong to someone else. So it's not exactly all kosher."

Fox and other studios who have ordered fans to take down copyrighted images and other material from their sites are the targets of a May 13 "Operation Blackout," a one-day fan-site shutdown designed to attract attention to the issue.

The upcoming protest doesn't impress The Screen Actors Guild, the union that represents actors. "The studios have an obligation to negotiate with our members individually if their images and performances are going to be used in anything other than the film they were originally employed in," Leonard Chassman, executive director of SAG's Hollywood branch, told CNN. "And [creators of fan sites] are subject to severe damages if they don't comply with that. The studios are in the best position as copyright holders in the property to control the situation. I applaud Fox for taking the action that it did."

Spotnitz Says X-Files Fate Unclear
Is this the last season of The X-Files? Executive producer Frank Spotnitz says it's still up in the air whether there will be an eighth year of the hit Fox television series. "I wish I knew!" Spotnitz said in a chat on Talkcity.com Monday, Feb. 7. "No one is asking me. It's entirely a question of negotiating new contracts with [series creator] Chris Carter and [star] David Duchovny."

If this is the last season, though, Spotnitz said to expect many questions to be answered, starting with the fate of Mulder's sister, Samantha. "This Sunday [Feb. 13] is the conclusion of the two-part episode in which we really, truly, honest-to-God find out what happened to Samantha," he promised.

As for a series finale, he said, "One thing I have noticed is that everybody who follows the show closely has a completely different set of burning questions that we must answer before it's too late. I know we're going to piss off someone! We're probably going to piss off a lot of people. But I think when the end comes, we will have answered all of the most important questions and probably raised some new ones."

And will there be another X-Files movie? That's also unclear. "If there is another movie, it will in some way be connected to the end of the television series," Spotnitz said. "But I think both Chris and I would love to do a stand-alone movie not connected to the show's mythology."

TV WEEK

By Jenny Cooney Carrillo
TV WEEK/LA Reporter

After almost a year of speculation about the future of The X-Files, Gillian Anderson confirms that Fox Mulder and Dana Scally will film their final episodes in the next few weeks.

Gillian Anderson has broken the silence and revealed that The X-Files is over. According to the redheaded actress who plays Dana Scully in the Network Ten series, the last episode will be taped in April, at the end of its seventh season.

"We will not be here for an eighth season, so it's a matter of mourning the end and this will be very emotional," Gillian tells TV WEEK, confirming what has been widely tipped by the series' fans.

When it's pointed out that she has an eight-year deal with producers 20th Century Fox -- unlike seven -- year contracts for creator/producer Chris Carter and co-star David Duchovny (Fox Mulder) -- and could be forced to continue without them, Gillian responds carefully. "I do, but I will not be doing an eighth season," she says.

"Seeing how the seasons have progressed, and seeing where we all are in our lives and in the life of the show as a whole, it makes sense to me that we've done our best years -- and I hope that it makes sense to others. We've done the best we can do,and we should be proud of what we've done. Everybody's attention is starting to wax and wane away from the central focus. The most beneficial thing for the series, to keep it in good form, is to go out on a high while we have the strength and the commitment to do it."

"I personally don't know if -- physically, emotionally, spiritually --

I could do another season and show up and put in 100 per cent," Gillian confesses. "When people have to show up and feel that they are doing it for insane reasons, I hope those involved in making that decision see clearly in that direction as well."

What the 31-year-old actress is really saying is that, despite her contract, she has no intention of returning to the role of another season.

Gillian feels that the powers-that-be won't call her bluff, because neither she nor David want to continue the series. However, both are interested in the continuation of the X-Files movie franchise, following the success of its first spin-off film in 1998.

"I understand that Fox and Chris Carter are both still interested in doing films, and to me that sounds like a wonderful way for us to go on," Gillian says.

"I also heard they may do an animated series, although I don't know who interested Chris is in that idea. But I think it would be great to have a Mulder-and-Scully animated series, and then we could come in once in a while and just do the voices!"

There has been trouble brewing behind the scenes of The X-Files for some time, including ongoing conflict between the series two main stars and a lawsuit that has created tension all round.

Even now, when Gillian, the mother of five-year-old Piper, is asked if new Dad David has sought any parenting tips, she pauses. "The day he ever asks me for a tip, I will buy you a humvee (an ultra-expensive army-style vehicle favored by stars like Arnold Schwarzenagger)" she responds.

But wouldn't their conversation be more about parenting since life has changed in that area?

"What conversations?" she replies with a shrug.. "We go to work and do our work, and that's the way it's always been. We both have our individual support systems and don't find a need to have to get anything from the other, and that's fine."

While Chris Carter confirms that 20th Century Fox has approached him about the possibility of extending his involvement with The X-Files, it hinges on whether the show's stars want to stay -- and David Duchovny, like Gillian, doesn't.

"Barring any kind of amazingly tricky time commitment that they could get out of me for the next year, I don't think it will happen," David told TV Week on our recent visit to The X-Files set in LA.

The other major nail on the coffin for the show is David's lawsuit against 20th Century Fox, filed in August last year, in which he claimed he was being cheated out of millions of dollars of his share of the show's profits because Fox sold syndication rights to its own affiliate stations across the US for less than the fair market price.

David also accused Chris of being paid "hush money" by Fox to maintain the conspiracy against him, and insiders say this has left such bad blood between the pair that they have not spoken or been in a room together since the suit was filed.

As The X-Files counts down towards its conclusion, a nostalgic Gillian looks back at the scared, unknown 24-year-old actress who became Dana Scully in 1993.

"It has been the most challenging, fortunate, perfect experience in all its imperfections that I could have dreamed of being involved in," she believes.

"To have the chance to play one of these two amazing characters and be involved in something that has a very strong place in the history of television is remarkable."

And what about Scully and Mulder having a happy ending? Gillian won't say, but David isn't convinced.

"I think it's a tricky question for everybody to address," he says. "If we're going off to make The X-Files movies, I don't think Chris Carter will want to resolve the relationship in any huge climatic way on the TV series.

"I don't think there's an easy way out for the writers in any case. They will have a few tough calls as we get towards the end of the series. All I can say is that I look forward to seeing those last few scripts."

Harsh Realm Comic Creators Sued

Chris Carter has sued Harsh Realm comic book creators James D. Hudnall and Andrew Paquette, seeking to keep them from speaking publicly about any link between their comic and Carter's television show of the same name. Carter's action is a counterclaim against the 1999 suit filed by the comic creators against Carter and Twentieth Century Fox's television production studio, Paquette said.

Hudnall and Paquette had sued to gain an onscreen "based on the comic book by" credit for the Harsh Realm television series, which aired on Fox's broadcast network before being canceled after three episodes. Fox and Carter have rejected a proposed settlement of that suit, claiming that Carter's show is not based on the comic, despite earlier press statements to the contrary.

The FX cable network, which is also owned by Fox, plans to air all eight completed episodes of Harsh Realm starting in March.
