News for the week of April 21 - April 27

On April 29th Gillian Anderson will be on Hollywood Squares, put it on your calendar!

The OS has posted pictures from the 200th episode party. Too see them go here. But below are a few of my favorites.

This is some news from the OS.
In The Pipeline

A little boy with a vivid imagination is at the center of "Scary Monsters" (9X12), which is written by Tom Schnauz and features the return of Agent Leyla Harrison. Dwight Little directs the episode scheduled to air on April 14th.

Wondering what happened after the final episode of The Lone Gunmen series? Answers are coming in 9X15. When Morris Fletcher returns to haunt the Gunmen, the three amigos go searching for Yves Harlow's hidden background -- with a little help from their old pal, Jimmy. Vince Gilligan, John Shiban and Frank Spotnitz join forces on the script for "Jump the Shark," directed by Cliff Bole. Michael McKean, Zuleikha Robinson and Stephen Snedden all guest star in the show that tentatively airs April 21st.

Doggett confronts and subdues a grotesquely disfigured man lurking in the X-files office who explains that he is seeking out information for Agent Mulder. Scully is skeptical of the man's motives, but when an examination indicates his DNA matches that of the long-missing Mulder, Scully is horrified to think this could be her former partner. David Duchovny directs "William," which tentatively airs on April 28th. Chris Carter wrote the teleplay from a story he created with Duchovny and Frank Spotnitz.

In "Release," a mysterious FBI trainee with the uncanny ability to accurately profile serial killers connects a recent group of murders to the killing of Doggett's son. Old wounds are reopened as Doggett grapples with his still-raw feelings about the death of Luke. X-Files WGA intern Jared Poe guest stars as the Quantico student whose insight torments Doggett. Kim Manners directs the episode, which is scheduled to air on May 5th, and David Amann wrote the teleplay from a story he developed with John Shiban.

A mysterious death leads Agents Scully, Doggett and Reyes to a seemingly quiet suburban neighborhood and a man who is driven by his obsession with "The Brady Bunch." Vince Gilligan directs "Sunshine Days" from his own script. The episode is set to air on May 12th.

The two-hour series finale, written by series creator Chris Carter, airs on May 19th at a special time -- 8PM/7C. In "The Truth," David Duchovny returns as Agent Mulder, who is on trial for murder. The trial leads to a military tribunal at which he is forced to save his own life as well as justify the existence of the X-files and extraterrestrials. Kim Manners directs.

Off Network Syndication Moves

The X-FILES off-network syndication moves to TNT and the SCI-FI Channel.

Following a successful five-year cable run on FX, The X-Files makes its way on TNT and the SCI FI Channel. The joint sale is set for a Fall 2002 launch.

"Chris Carter's The X-Files is a ground breaking series that gave birth to a genre, helped brand a network and became an international pop-culture icon and syndication phenomenon. Throughout its nine year network run on Fox, it held #1 time period ratings and was awarded over 40 honors, including 16 Emmys, 5 Golden Globes and the prestigious Peabody awards," stated Bob Cook, President & COO of Twentieth Television. "We are pleased that both TNT and the SCI FI Channel have recognized the show's tremendous value."

The hour long drama series will continue its weekend run in syndication, where it is currently the highest rated weekly syndicated hour. The X-Files was the first off-net weekly to offer a Monday through Friday cable strip with a weekend window in syndication, opening the door for other weeklies.

Whichever Network Wins May Sweeps, Audience Will Be Losers

Demonstrating the fierce competition for ratings during the all-important May sweeps period, all four major networks are airing specials on Sunday, May 19, each of which could have dominated any regular night. The four are the series finale of Fox's The X-Files, the season finale of CBS's Survivor: Marquesas and ABC's The Practice, and NBC's "Cosby Reunion." A Fox spokesman, who noted that The X-Files has aired on Sunday nights for years, told today's (Friday) New York Post,"It's just a shame that each of these deserving programs aren't getting their own day in the sun."

X-FILES images from Duchovnys William
He directs episode centering on odd Mulder pal

The first images are out from the episode of THE X-FILES directed by onetime Fox Mulder, David Duchovny. The episode, William airs April 28 and centers on a friend of Mulder trying to get into the X-files on Mulders behalf.

There are also some images coming out from May 5s episode Release which tells the story of a new FBI trainee profiler who digs up information on the long-ago death of Agent Doggetts son.

(Note from Rachael: The person sitting at the table is Chris Owens... remember him? Yep, Chris Owens played The Great Mutato in PMP and Jeffrey Spender in many episodes. This is a whole new character)

Anderson Lauds Duchovny Return

Gillian Anderson told SCI FI Wire that she and David Duchovny started their journey together on The X-Files nine years ago, so she's pleased that he will return for "The Truth," the two-hour series finale that's now before the cameras. "I would have thought, 'Well, wait a minute, this isn't right. This isn't right,'" Anderson said in an interview, explaining how she might have reacted had Duchovny not agreed to play Fox Mulder to her Dana Scully one last time on the series.

Anderson, who is contracted to appear in a second feature film based on The X-Files, added, "I'm very glad that the show is completely ending now, because I have a feeling that even though I would have mourned to a certain degree in saying goodbye, there would have been something left undone. It wouldn't have been as clean, and I feel like we have an opportunity now to really tie it up in a whole, constructive and completing way." Fox will air "The Truth" on May 19.

News for the week of April 14 - April 20

I'm sorry about the lack of news these past weeks... I don't know what happened.

SCI FI Gets X-Files, Roswell

The SCI FI Channel announced that it has acquired the rights to air reruns of all nine seasons of The X-Files and all three seasons of Roswell. In an eight-year deal, SCI FI will share The X-Files with TNT and will air all 202 episodes exclusively during weekdays from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET/PT, starting in the fall.

SCI FI also bought the rights to Roswell in an exclusive five-year deal. Roswell will debut on SCI FI this fall.

The X-Files, which currently airs original episodes on Fox, wraps its nine-year run in May. Roswell, which airs original episodes on UPN, is in its thirdseason; its prospects for renewal for a fourth year are dim.

New Dragons Reign In Fire

Rob Bowman, director of the upcoming SF movie Reign of Fire, told SCI FI Wire that the dragons on view in the film will set the standard for big-screen dragons. "I did not want to make the dragon from Dragonheart, which was a large body, small wingspan and had to flap like mad to stay in the air," Bowman said in an interview. "Mine have big, giant wingspans like an eagle, but take a king cobra and put it down the center."

Bowman, the director of multiple episodes of The X-Files and The X-Files movie, added, "I spent about nine months designing these things. I had drawings in about three weeks that I presented, and then we started designing characteristics and personalities and making them more serpentlike than dinosaurlike. They look like they're alive, agile and very supreme killers. I had paleontologists involved and a lot of artists involved, and we got to a boil-down point, because a lot of fantasy dragons are very exaggerated, have too many horns and look human anyway. We got it down to a sterile, realistic dragon, but it was boring. So I went back a little bit and added back some things that people who like dragons like to see, which is horns and attitude. So our dragon looks great, and it would really work if there were such a creature. This thing is as real as we could make it." Reign of Fire, which stars Matthew McConaughey, Christian Bale and Izabella Scorupco, will open nationwide on July 12.

Nutter Helming Witch Mountain

Longtime X-Files director David Nutter will helm Disney's remake of its 1975 movie Escape to Witch Mountain, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Disney said it intended for the film to have an X-Files and Roswell feel to it, and Nutter has directed episodes of both series, the trade paper reported.

The movie tells the story of two teenagers with telekinetic powers. The original film was based on the novel of the same name by Alexander Key.

Renee's Number One

Actress Rene Zellweger is number one in the music charts - as the subject of Ariel Horovitz' hit song! The singer/songwriter is currently at the top of the Israeli single charts with his ode to the Bridget Jones's Diary beauty. The lyrics are, "I was at an American movie and fell in love with the actress/My love still doesn't suspect that I, determined by inevitable fate, am closing the distance and I have an address and a picture/Rene, your life will change from one end to another because I'm on my way/Restaurant, black dress, confusing cleavage - good thing I prepared the speech back in Israel./Touch me, Rene, look - I'm not made of plastic./You'll have a real life with me." Zellweger is not the first star to hit the pop charts like this in recent years. Popster Bree Sharp hit the American charts in the '90s with an ode to David Duchovny.
(Note from Rachael: I don't think she actually 'hit the charts' but she was pretty big for awhile with Philes)
