News From December '99

I got the news dated 12/27/99 from The X-Files Form Update

Golden Globes

The 2000 Golden Globe Awards have snubbed The X-Files after a long love affair with the show. Sciece fiction is out. Mobsters, lawyers, doctors, and politicians are in. Not one Sci-fi/fantasy show was nominated.

Never fear though, the TV-GUIDE has not forgotton the good shows. In it's last issue of the year, TV-Guide listed The X-Files as the tenth best series of 1999. Among the year's instant classics: the terrifying "Millennium episode that ended sweetly with a New Year's kiss between Scully and Mulder and a whimsical homage to baseball (written and directed by David Duchovny), in which a legendary 1940's Negro Leaguer is revealed to be an alien enchanted with the sport.

Harsh Realm on FX

There is semi-confirmation that Harsh Realm will live on for at least 5 more episodes on FX. I know... I don't have FX either. Iizel Envy completed the visual effects on the eight and final episode. Harsh Realm was canceled by Fox after airing only three episodes. Considering how much money Fox has invested in the project, it comes as not suprise that they would want to use the finished episodes. The FX Network will tentatively begin airing all the episodes in March of 2000. A source says that FX is considering producing more episodes of the show. Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz would produce any new episodes. All the key actors are still under contract, so it would be able to FX's advantage to get as many episodes in the can as soon as possible. Of course, all this is based on the show's ratings.

X-Files on DVD

Fox Home Entertainment is releasing the entire first season of The X-Files on DVD in May, 2000. The 7-disc box set will feature deleted scenes, as well as interviews with Chris Carter, Dan Haglund, and the numerous wrigers and directors. There are already plans to realease the next six seasons. Stop recording those funky VHS tapes of the show off of FX or your local TV station. The DVDs would be worth the cost by saving your valuable time, not to mention, all the extra goodies and the high quality. Each episode includes the promo for that episode. At this time, the 7-disc box sets will be the only way to purchase each season. Personally, I don't have a problem with that. The List Price for season one is $149.99, but the set can be found for less that $100.00 at all the major Video Outlets. Amazon.com, Reel.com, DVD Express and others are taking orders online for $89.99.

An attorney representing David Duchovny is charging that Fox-TV made "sweetheart deals" with its own Fx cable network that prevented Duchovny from receiving his contracted share of profits from the series. Peter Nelson told CNN Tuesday: "The problem began when the [financial] statements would arrive showing what the profits were on The X- Files, and to our surprise, after six years of the show being on the air as one of the most successful shows of all time, according to Fox, there were no profits, or virtually no profits." Ordinarily, producers make the lion's share of profits in syndication, but Nelson charges: "The biggest problem was that Fox never put the show on the market. Had Fox put the show on the market, we believe that the bidders would have bid the price up significantly."

Fox Calls The X-Files A 'Major Priority'

The X-Files will continue beyond its current season if Fox TV has anything to say about it. Sandy Grushow, the new chairman of Fox Television Entertainment Group, told the Los Angeles Times that the seven-year-old hit is "a major priority, and it will continue to be one until we've secured another season."

Series creator Chris Carter and stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have all said they're ready to bow out at the end of the current season. Duchovny is also suing Fox for allegedly shortchanging him on the sale of X-Files reruns.
